There's a certain vastness of space in Kathleen Edwards's country-pop compositions, a quietude that seems to brew only north of the U.S.-Canadian border. The Toronto singer-songwriter's 2000 debut, FAILER, plays like a slightly peppier HARVEST MOON with a more honeyed voice. She sells sadness sweetly, whether bitterly tearing down an urban outlaw ("Six O'Clock News"), lamenting the crazed nature of the music game ("One More Song the Radio Won't Like"), or throwing in the towel on an exhausting love ("Hockey Skates").
Recorded at Little Bullhorn, Ottawa, Canada and Rogue Studios, Toronto, Canada.
Personnel: Kathleen Edwards (vocals, acoustic guitar, strings); Jim Bryson (electric guitar, banjo, background vocals); Fred Guignon (slide guitar, lap steel guitar, National guitar); Tom Thompson (pedal steel guitar); Keith Snider (banjo); Petert Cancura (soprano saxophone, baritone saxophone); Blair Phillips (alto saxophone); Maury Lafoy (piano); Dave Draves (organ, vibraphone); Kevin McCarragher (bass); Joel Anderson, Peter Von Althen (drums, percussion); Dave Dudley (drums).

Failer
$12.05 WORLD WITHOUT TEARS was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. "Righteously" was nominated for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.
Though it's ultimately a less balladic, more stylistically varied album than its dreamy predecessor ESSENCE, WORLD WITHOUT TEARS starts out with a slow-burning, reverb-drenched ballad, but then takes ...

With the specter of a terminal lung cancer diagnosis hanging over his head, Warren Zevon responded by rallying to make THE WIND, an album that found him working with longtime collaborator and friend Jorge Calderon, shortly after getting the news. The result is a tight group of 11 songs wrapped up in a year, ...

| | Stacey Earle Never Gonna Let You Go CDs (2003) Limited Edition
Failer
$9.79 Inital pressings of NEVER GONNA LET YOU GO contain a bonus CD featuring acoustic versions of 10 songs from the album.
On the four records Stacey Earle issued up to this point, only the last two feature companion and musical collaborator Mark Stuart's name as a co-leader. His presence is felt on every record, and the increasing sophistication of the pair's collaboration is best evidenced by Never Gonna Let You Go. Sharing songwriting credits, lead vocals, and a band between them, this is easily the finest effort Earle and Stuart have ever issued. Here are 13 tight songs that grace along topics of love and its loss, melancholy, desire, tenderness, sadness, and delight. No, it's not an alt.country record. No. No. No. Get over it. What it is, is a stellar exploration of the many varied styles country music and blues have touched upon and drawn from over the previous 50 years. Here are the gorgeous ragtime blues "Spread Your Wings" and the West Texas-drenched folk of "Me and the Man in the Moon," which is dusted with the fairy dust of 1940s pop. Stuart's "If You Want My Love" moves through the kind of swing Darrell Scott first evoked on his solo recordings, but is far more effective than Lyle Lovett's attempt at the same thing -- especially with Earle's wonderfully unusual voice and a kazoo riding just above a thumping double bass in harmony. The swing band/jug ensemble feel that comes spilling from the record may seem an unlikely one, but it works like carrots ...

$11.39 What do you get when you cram five master musicians of divergent styles together in one band? In the case of Avalon Rising, the answer is: MAGIC.To say they're the world's foremost practitioners of Celtic/Medieval progressive rock could be meaningless, given the scanty membership of the genre - until you factor in just how damn good they are. Hearing them perform, one is hard-put to say just what kind of music they're playing - just that it rocks, it screams, it soars, it whispers. Elements of Classical, Celtic folk, French Medieval, psychedelic jam band and funk interweave, conflict, and finally coalesce into a stunning, surprising whole. One hears echoes of Loreena McKennit, Dead Can Dance, the Grateful Dead, Fairport Convention, and the Pentangle. They're a motley assemblage. There's the beautiful Flower Princess on harp (not the harmonica, the big wooden thing with all the strings) who also plays flute and recorder and sings in a sweet, classically trained soprano. Then there's the blonde goddess in black velvet, sensuously bowing a purple, cat-headed 5-string electric violin. Does life get any better than this? But wait - in front of a stack of tie-dyed amplifiers, in a bowler hat and John Cippolina t-shirt, pulling a stream of howling, lyrical, psychedelic riffs from a sparkly purple Stratocaster, is a genial bearded hobbit-man who sings in a honeyed tenor. Behind them all sullenly ...
