The popular and pioneering new age label Windham Hill comes along to stake its claim in the somewhat hazy style known as chill-out, a stylistic trend that commonly goes hand in hand with slow hip-hop beats, breathy female vocals, and cozy atmospheric touches. Windham Hill Chill: Ambient Acoustic features material with a similar desired effect that doesn't have very much in common with chill-out. This is a two-disc set separated into ambient and acoustic sets and, surprisingly enough, the inclusions are presented in a continuous mix -- just like the hundreds of chill-out-themed compilation albums that were populating record store bins at the time of its release. The ambient disc features songs from Yanni ("To the One Who Knows"), Tangerine Dream ("Cool at Heart"), David Arkenstone ("Into the Dreamtime"), and Ravi Shakar's "Ragas in Minor Scale." On the acoustic disc, there's Michael Hedges ("Rickover's Dream"), Phil Coulter ("Sunlight on the Water"), Liz Story ("Wedding Rain"), George Winston ("Cloudburst"), and W.G. Snuffy Walden ("Alone"). If the concept of chill-out music appeals to you, and if the underfed models on the covers of many chill-out compilations signify that the music might not be up your alley, a compilation of relaxing music such as this will be more likely to suit you. ~ Andy Kellman Windham Hill Chill Songs | | Windham Hill Chill CD DISC 1: AMBIENT: |

| Windham Hill Chill Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Buy it for CD 1 alone Some Windham Hill releases can be overly "sweet". You know this is true. While I would hardly put this CD into the same "Chill" category as the Water Music or Interchill labels, the music here is really quite excellent. CD1, in particular, is a great selection of music that flows from one piece to another. This CD is closer to chill than CD2, which is much more acoustic, focused, in a large part, on piano music. Unfortunately, many of the tracks sound alike, making CD 2 not quite as interesting as CD 1. As with all compilation CDs, this is a great way to sample music by many diverse artists, so you can go out and by their complete CDs!! Unlike most Windham Hill releases, many of these artists also record on other labels. From this compilation, I highly recommend further llistening of State of Grace with Paul Schwarz, anything by Oystein Sevag, the Angels of Venice (and "Music for Harp" by Carol Tatum), and the late Michael Hedges. Windham Hill Chill
$37.99 From Wauchope, NSW, Helen has been writing songs since her late teens, and has worked as a professional pianist since the age of 21. Of her songwriting, she says: “ideas and stories come and I have to express them in what I feel is hopefully the most poignant way I can. I have been told by many that I am a storyteller in my music and I guess that’s a dominant focus in my songwriting.â€Helen’s poignancy comes through her songs, and her capacity to convey ideas in an original way was one of the things that earned her the title as the 2001 ASA Songwriter of the Year , with ‘They Told me “This Is Africaâ€â€™, winning ahead ...
