Bonanza - Volume 2 Movie Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Excellent!! Excellent quality & great stories to reminisce about Submitted by kathy.jones (Missoula MT USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Four classic episodes of a great western series!, Bonanza was a very popular Western TV series that ran on NBC from 1959 to 1973. The series starred Lorne Greene as Ben Cartwright, patriarch of the Ponderosa. Dan Blocker, Michael Landon and Pernell Roberts starred as his sons Hoss, Little Joe and Adam, the oldest of the three. Of these actors, only Pernell Roberts is still with us. Lorne Greene died in 1987, Dan Blocker in 1972, and Michael Landon passed away in 1991.
Platinum Disc Corporation (now Echo Bridge Home Entertainment) has released 8 volumes of this classic show, consisting of of a total of 31 episodes, on DVD.
The episodes on this disc are from the first season (1959-1960) and are as follows:
Showdown
San Francisco Holiday
The Mill
Escape To The Ponderosa
I found all the episodes on this disc entertaining and interesting, especially San Francisco Holiday. This highly entertaining and comedic episode tells what happens to the Cartwrights when they go on holiday in San Francisco--it turns out to be anything but! In this episode two ranchers of Ben Cartwright are kidnapped to be trained as sailors! When Ben Cartwright investigates, he's captured by the same people. When Hoss and Little Joe try to find out what happened to their father, they all mysteriously disappear! How they get out of their predicament is something you've never seen in Bonanza before!
As for the picture quality of these episodes, they're fine, especially for a show 46 years old! I saw very few instances of grain. Sometimes the picture wavered a bit and there were a few lines that came and went across the screen, but nothing too distracting. The colors were perfect, skin tones were true-to-life and there is some beautifully photographed scenery that is just breathtaking! The sound was excellent as well, dialog is easily heard, which is good as there were no subtitles or closed-captioning on this disc.
The only thing I didn't like much about this release was that the original, beloved Bonanza theme is missing. It's replaced by a similar theme called "Return To The Ponderosa", which sounds great as it opens up the show, but it's still not the original theme! It's for this reason that I gave my review 4 stars instead of 5.
However, if you're not a purist, this shouldn't bother you and if you're a big fan of classic TV westerns with honest and good storytelling, then you'll want to add this to your collection!

In this thriller from director Michael Bay (PEARL HARBOR, ARMAGEDDON), survivors of global contamination live in a sterile, self-contained world where their every move is monitored. The rules are easy: be pleasant, refrain from asking questions, and don't rock the boat. Everything they need is provided for them, from the white uniforms that magically appear in their closets, to their customized cafeteria-style meals. The survivors all eagerly await their big payoff: winning the lottery and being sent to The Island, the only remaining untainted land in the world. But Lincoln Six-Echo (Ewan McGregor) yearns for more from his life and begins to wonder what really lies outside the thick walls. When his best friend, Jordan Two-Delta (Scarlett Johansson), wins the lottery, he knows that he has to find out the truth about their world before she departs. What he finds is terrifying enough to send Lincoln and Jordan fleeing from the facility to the real world where they quickly discover that they are clones, and that both The Island and global contamination are a ruse. The clones sole purpose is to be harvested for replacement parts when their sponsors need them. With his business now in jeopardy, Dr. Merrick (Sean ...
| | Memoirs Of A Geisha DVDs (2005)
Bonanza - Volume 2 film
$16.49 Arthur Golden's blockbuster bestseller, MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA, has been brilliantly brought to the big screen by Oscar-nominated director Rob Marshall (CHICAGO). The film opens in a remote Japanese fishing village in 1929, where two sisters, Chiyo and Satsu, are sold by their troubled father to people who place Chiyo in a classy geisha house known as an okiya in Gion and Satsu in a much more vulgar and dangerous district. Chiyo becomes a maid to Hatsumomo, a cold, controlling, and calculating geisha who is instantly jealous of Chiyo's unusual, beautiful eyes and childish innocence. Chiyo is befriended by Pumpkin, another maid at the okiya, but the two are soon driven apart. Chiyo is shown compassion by the Chairman and another, more successful geisha, Mameha, who takes her under her wing as her "little sister," furthering the battle between Chiyo, now called Sayuri, and Hatsumomo. As Sayuri is trained in the art of being a geisha, learning how to walk, talk, dance, and serve (up to a point) in order to please and honor her distinguished male clients, World War II looms on the horizon, threatening to upend Japan and its old ways.
MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA is a lush, sweeping historical and romantic epic, featuring gorgeous period costumes, primarily the exquisite kimono worn by the geisha. Ziyi Zhang (HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS) is outstanding as Sayuri, who stands up to the oppressive Hatsumomo (the effervescent Gong Li), while Michelle Yeoh, who starred with Zhang in CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON, is splendid as the wise and elegant Mameha. Ken Watanabe (THE LAST SAMURAI), Koji Yakusho (SHALL WE DANCE?), and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa (ELEKTRA) are among the men who take an interest in Sayuri, who is continually faced with ...
