New York's Tiger Style Records began in 1999 as an outgrowth of the successful online indie music site Insound. Together with Mike Treff, Insound founders Ari Sass, Christian Anthony, and Matt Wishnow parlayed their experience and connections in the independent music community into a label that would emulate the D.I.Y. ethic and successful business model of legendary labels like Touch & Go and Dischord. Tiger Style was an immediate success, solidifying its indie cred (so important when competing against other labels for tastemaking releases) with an ever-growing stable of respected -- or at least buzzworthy -- artists. Arriving in January of 2003, Tiger Style Sampler includes 17 tracks tracing the disparity of the acts who record for the label. Things begin with the slashing disco of no wave veteran James Chance's "Contort Yourself," followed quickly by the hard-edged skronk of Rye Coalition's "ZZ Topless." But in a display of how eclectic Tiger Style really is, the next two songs on the compilation are stylistic right turns. Montreal's Dears contribute the pretty chamber pop of "Duexieme Partit," while the Faint's Joel Peterson crosses the circuits of new wave and Atari 2600s for "Connection in Progress," from his side project, Broken Spindles. The inclusion of Dead Low Tide's "Barrel Vault" is noteworthy, as it is the only recording the short-lived group ever made. The sampler continues with quiet moments from Ida and Mercury Program, and even ventures into IDM territory with the burbling electronics of London's Wauvenfold. The post-rock of Mercury Program's "Egypt" is augmented by two Tristeza-related songs. Jimmy LaValle, the band's guitarist, contributes the aptly named "Asleep" from his Album Leaf side project. LaValle later returns with Tristeza itself for the album-closing drone of "Marumari Remix." In between, there's an alternate take of Ida's "Blizzard of '78" and Tara Jane O'Neil contributes a previously unreleased mix of her song "The Ballroom." Together, the 17 songs on Tiger Style Sampler illustrate the depth, breadth, and street cred of the label, while introducing its artists to anyone who might be curious about what a band called Her Space Holiday or American Analog Set sounds like. ~ Johnny LoftusRolling Stone (3/6/03, p.70) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...Most everything here is good..." Tiger Style Sampler album
$9.58 Susan Boyle's grand unveiling on Britain's Got Talent was with a song from Les Miserables - the very song that lends this album its title -- and if she could become an international sensation based on a show tune standard, there's no reason for her to change her approach on her debut, since that's the sound that made her a star. Plus, a large part of Boyle's appeal is that she's a middle-aged woman recalling a bygone era when there were singers that appealed to an adult audience by offering soft, stately versions of pop hits and standards. That time was the late `60s and early `70s, and apart from a rather faithful version of Madonna's "You'll See," I Dreamed a Dream could very well have been released all those years ago, as it mixes up the show tunes, gospel, and Christmas carols with covers of Skeeter Davis' "The End of the World," the Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses," and a version of "Daydream Believer" that is easily the slowest on record. Boyle sings beautifully throughout, delivering ...

| | Nirvana Bleach CD (1989) Deluxe; Deluxe Edition
Tiger Style Sampler album
$12.78 With a sludgy, chainsaw guitar sound that owes as much to early Black Sabbath as to Kurt Cobain's heroes The Melvins, whose drummer puts in an appearance here, Nirvana emerges from Seattle's underground scene as standard-bearers of a style that embraces the anger and energy of punk alongside the thick, muddy sonic attack favored by early '70s proto-metal bands. Cobain's lyrics are fueled by outrage and self-loathing, combining literary flair with a direct, visceral quality that makes him a viable candidate for the John-Lennon-of-Gen X award.
Nirvana's debut album showcases what sounds more like a force of nature than a rock band. The unrelenting fervor with which the group delivers these 13 tunes is almost frightening. There is also a strong melodic flair that leavens the ferocity occasionally, hinting at the scope of Cobain's compositional talents. "Love Buzz" and "About A Girl" show off enough pop smarts to make it clear that as strong as BLEACH is, Cobain's ...

Tiger Style Sampler CD music
$10.35 Pink's insistently hooky, attitude-filled pop-rock has kept the singer a fixture on the radio and on singles charts since the early 2000s. The artist's fifth effort, FUNHOUSE, doesn't tamper with the formula: Pink's powerhouse vocals and in-your-face approach, backed by stadium-sized production, are in full effect on all 12 tracks. Even though the album deals primarily with aftermath of her divorce and includes serious moments of self-confrontation like "Sober," fans needn't worry that Pink has lost any of her chutzpah.
If anything, there's an ...
