Boston's Downbeat 5 have been around the block enough times to have participated in two different Nuggets revivals -- lead guitarist and primary songwriter J.J. Rassler was in DMZ, Boston's primary contribution to the late-'70s post-punk snot rock wave, not to mention the almighty Queers -- but their 2003 debut album has the spitfire energy of a bunch of hopped-up kids in a garage. Jen Rassler's yowling voice (think of Paula Pierce in the Pandoras' early, pre-metal days) fits the scrape and clang of the guitars perfectly, and the rhythm section is surprisingly fluid for this kind of music (rather like the early Stooges, who were always rhythmically looser and more supple than their straight 4/4 brethren), which ratchets up these songs' power considerably. The twin pinnacles are the poppy "Don't Come Cryin' to Me," a garage punk standard in waiting, and the East Coast surf powerhouse "99 River Street." At 14 songs in 41 minutes, Ism might possibly overstay its welcome just a hair, but overall, it's one of the strongest debuts of this decade's garage rock revival. ~ Stewart Mason

Ism album
$11.59 Released in 2007, Horndog Fest was the debut outing of future Detroit powerhouse the Dirtbombs. The album opens with the screeching clatter of "Vixens in Space." An instrumental assault punctuated with periodic shouts of the title phrase, the song is something like spaced-out surf-rock disintegrating as it burns through the atmosphere. For those who survive the opening onslaught, the reward is sweet. With a sexy bass groove that stutters like the Knack at ...
| | Dirtbombs Ultraglide In Black CD (2001)
Ism CD music
$10.65 Take a stack of soul platters from the 1960s and 1970s from the likes of Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, Sly & the Family Stone, Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, and Stevie Wonder; mix generously with a propulsive mix of two bass guitars, two drummers, and the vocals of a Detroit rock legend; and you have an underrated gem in the Motor City music scene. Ultraglide in Black puts a rock spin on ...

| | Rockpile Seconds Of Pleasure CD (1980) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Ism album
$6.25 The CD contains the four songs from the bonus EP--NICK LOWE & DAVE EDMUNDS SING THE EVERLY BROTHERS--included with the original LP release.
Kindred spirits Dave Edmunds and Nick Lowe had worked together extensively in different capacities in the 1970s, but their on-again/off-again band Rockpile only recorded one album, 1980's superlative SECONDS OF PLEASURE. It stands as one of the finest examples of the pub-rock/power-pop crossroads that defined the band's aesthetic. Edmunds and Lowe's American influences are worn on the sleeve (literally), as they spark new life into tunes by Chuck Berry ("Oh What a Thrill") and soul man Joe Tex ("If Sugar Was as Sweet as You").
Incredibly, the duo's own compositions stand up just as well. "When I Write the Book" would have been a standout on any classic Sam & Dave LP, and "Heart" is a finer faux-Motown piece than one could ever expect from a bunch of Brits. This 2004 reissue is spiced ...

| | Like Summer From Arlington Heights With Love CD (2006)
Ism CD music
$8.55 Like Summer cohered at a tightly conservative school in the middle of Western Pennsylvania farm country, not exactly a nurturing rock-n-roll haven. Drummer Dan Harding, the first to hear lyricist Steve Gretz’s well-crafted songs, determined that the world should know them. Bassist Trevor Baker and guitarist/keyboard player Ben Hardt rounded out the group. After deliberating for five frustrating months over a name, the group settled on the title of a Gretz original: “Like Summer.”Band members graduated in waves from college, moving to Pittsburgh, ...
