Cross LA BOHÈME with CABARET, throw in a little bit of RENT, and you might almost begin to describe Baz Luhrmann's visually opulent, fast-paced, funny, heartrending MOULIN ROUGE. The film, which premiered as the opener to the 2001 Cannes Film Festival, is a musical set in 1899 Paris at the notorious Montmartre cabaret club, the Moulin Rouge. Directed by Luhrmann (WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE'S ROMEO AND JULIET, STRICTLY BALLROOM), the movie stars Nicole Kidman as the high-kicking courtesan, Satine; Ewan McGregor as the sensitive poet, Christian; and John Leguizamo as the flamboyant artist and matchmaker, Toulouse-Lautrec. Luhrmann's use of eclectic lighting and saturated color, the fast zooms and quick cuts of his camera, and his magnificent costumes and sets perfectly capture the excess and freneticism for which the Moulin Rouge was famous. Beautifully led by McGregor and Kidman, the flawless supporting cast brings to life the culture of belle époque Paris with magical realism. Above all, the anachronistic, energetic contemporary soundtrack is what drives MOULIN ROUGE, with popular songs by L'il Kim, Christina Aguilera, David Bowie, and Beck--as well as Kidman and McGregor adding their own superb vocals.

Theatrical Release: MAY 18, 2001 (LA/NY) JUNE 1, 2001 (WIDE RELEASE)

4 stars Nicole is stunning
It took me a few times of watching this movie to really enjoy it, I had a hard time of the incorporation of modern music to old themes but I have since come around to really appreciate Baz's vision.

5 stars Cor Blimey!
Fantastic film from Baz. I was a little concerned regarding the singing voices of the two stars but they pull it off magnificently. The film is enhanced by Craig Armstrong who is surely the greatest composer of film music at present. I bought it from the States as it's not due to be released here in England until May. I saw the film at the Cinema last summer and was reticent about going at first as I thought it maybe too much of a "chick flick" for me. I'm glad my girlfriend persuaded me to go. I loved every minute. A camp classic which also has Kylie in it! What more can I say?

5 stars the best dvd ever made!!!
i own over 150 dvd's, of all types of movies, old and new, but, moulin rouge, is without a doubt, the greatest dvd i have ever owned. no dvd can match the sheer magnitude of extras that this one has, and, the video and audio quality on this dvd, has no equal, this is a movie you can watch time and time again, so, in short, no collection is complete without moulin rouge.

The title was a promise to themselves, Wham!'s assurance that they would make it big after struggling out of the gates the first time out. They succeeded on a grander scale than they ever could have imagined, conquering the world and elsewhere with this effervescent set of giddy new wave pop-soul, thereby making George Michael a superstar and consigning Andrew Ridgeley to the confines of Trivial Pursuit. It was so big and the singles were so strong that it's easy to overlook its patchwork qualities. It's no longer than eight tracks, short even for the pre-CD era, and while the four singles are strong, the rest is filler, including an Isley Brothers cover. Thankfully, it's the kind of filler that's so tied to its time that it's fascinating in its stilted post-disco dance-pop rhythms and Thatcher/Reagan materialism -- an era that encouraged songs called "Credit Card Baby." If this dichotomy between the A-sides and B-sides is far too great to make this essential, the way Faith later would be, those A-sides range from good to terrific. "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" is absolute silliness whose very stupidity is its strength, and if "Everything She Wants" is merely agreeable bubblegum, "Freedom" is astounding, a sparkling Motown rip-off rippling with spirit and a timeless melody later ripped off by Noel Gallagher. Then, there's the concluding "Careless Whisper," a soulful slow one where Michael regrets a one-night stand over a richly seductive background and a yearning saxophone. It was an instant classic, and it was the first indication

John Waters' Cry-Baby goes hand in hand with Hairspray, and is a musical film that will probably appeal more to Waters' fans than fans of musical cinema. There is nothing original or exciting about the music on the soundtrack, as energetic as it is, and its bizarre nature is probably due to the scenes from the film rather than its own oddities. Waters describes it as "music that proved kids knew how to be bad before sex, drugs, and rock & roll," yet there seems to be little separation between those attributes and the concoction of lust and loudness here. Songs like "Doin' Time for Bein' Young" and "High School Hellcats" are no different from rock & roll, except that they sound like weak imitations of songs from Grease. Waters, the master of imitation and suburban insult, may very well have planned it that way. What might have changed everything would be to have Johnny Depp, who stars as Wade "Cry-Baby" Walker, sing the songs himself. He lip-syncs to the voice of James Intveld. Depp, a surprising actor who never shies away from big-handed tasks, should have supplied his own voice, even if he sounded terrible; isn't Waters one of the greatest living admirers of "terrible"? ~ Peter Fawthrop

Zucker, Abrahams, and Zucker--of AIRPLANE! and NAKED GUN fame--wrote and directed this genre-hopping slapstick juggernaut which lampoons World War II spy films and Elvis movies, making many other satirical stops along the way. East Germany is planning a cultural festival, and invites rock-and-roll singer Nick Rivers (Val Kilmer) (but only after Leonard Bernstein can't make it). The festival, however is a mere distraction so that the Germans can launch a secret attack on a submarine fleet without being detected. Nick soon finds himself involved with the French resistance, encountering slapstick gags and film parodies every time he turns around. Jeremy Kemp, Lucy Gutteridge, Val Kilmer, Warren Clarke - Director: David Zucker, Jerry Zucker, Jim Abrahams "Top Secret!" pits American rock star Nick Rivers (Val Kilmer) against the dreaded East German High Command. It's a race against time as Nick teams up with Hillary Flammond (Lucy Gutteridge) to find her father before he can create the ultimate super weapon - the Polaris Mine. Along the way, "Top Secret!" manages to do for war epics and Elvis films what "Airplane!" did to disaster movies.
