Amethystium: Oystein Ramfjord. Additional personnel: Martha Krossbakken, Joyelle Brandt, John Yannis Fyssas (vocals); Synove Flobak (cello). Aphelion is the point where a planet or any celestial body is furthest from the sun. While this must be pretty dark place, Amethystium breathes light into the shadows. Amethystium is Oystein Ramfjord, a Norwegian composer who shapes elements of electronica and darkwave, evoking classic Tangerine Dream and Kitaro. This is the follow-up album to ODONATA, Ramfjord's acclaimed debut. Voices figure prominently into each song's construction. Often ethereal and wordless, these sound forms give a great depth and haunting quality to the music, while the only discernible lyrics are found on "Autumn Interlude." Amidst pitch shifting and electronic squall, guest vocalist Joyelle Brandt soars, recalling the powerful collaboration between Sarah McLachlan and Delirium. Gregorian inflections are found on "Shadow to Light" and "Exultation." The Indian-themed "Garden of Sakuntala" is driven by the tightly stretched skins of a tabla. "Elvensong" features the cello of Synove Flobak. With a gem cutter's precision, Ramfjord integrates a dizzying array of sonic embellishments into epic meditations.

Music to do many life happenings This CD I have on in the full blast, also while doing housework that I don't like doing, full blast. The melodies he has created has some effect on the brain waves - can't tell which ones though! He has added some nice voice sounds too which makes for meditative drive time while in traffic. Great effect on me. Submitted by a reviewer (San Diego CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.

| | Joe Tex First On The Dial CD (2008) Bonus Tracks
Aphelion
$14.15 Southern soul man Joe Tex came to fame with such mid-1960s hits for the Dial label as "Hold What You've Got," but before that breakthrough, he recorded a batch of equally memorable tunes for Dial. Those are collected on the two-disc set FIRST ON THE DIAL, which finds Tex already fully in command of his expressive voice as he belts out such songs as "Meet Me in Church" and "Blood's Thicker Than Water." Joe Tex had been releasing records for almost a decade before he had his first hit in 1965. This 25-track compilation doesn't come close to including all of them, but it does a good job in assembling the most important of those, concentrating solely on discs he made for the Dial label, almost all of the songs having been cut in 1961-1964 prior to his chart breakthrough. At this point, Tex -- as was the case in the pre-fame recordings of numerous '60s soul stars -- was still searching for a style to some degree, and by and large the cuts aren't as earthy as the ones he'd lay down later in the decade. There are even songs with strong debts to early-'60s dance-novelty tunes ("The Peck"); arrangements similar to those heard in early-'60s 45s by poppy early soul singers like Marv Johnson and Dee Clark; and hints of Clyde McPhatter, Sam Cooke, and doo wop. Yet at the same time, there are also strong pleading ballads much closer to the Southern soul style with which he became identified, all of them written by Tex himself, the slightly James Brown-ish "Blood's Thicker Than Water" being a particular highlight in that regard. Because this isn't Tex at his peak or his most characteristic, you wouldn't recommend this as the first or second anthology to acquire. But if you do like Tex at his '60s peak, it's suggested listening, both because it illustrates his roots and because it's enjoyable on its own merits. Also on the CD are a few tracks that fall outside the disc's principal aim of anthologizing 1961-1964 Dial singles, but are worthy additions that are hard to find on compact disc, including the 1967 holiday-themed 45 "I'll Make Every Day Christmas (For My Woman)" and its flip, "Don't Give Up"; the 1965 B-side "Build Your Love on a Solid Foundation"; and two cuts from a 1965 LP, "Tell Me Right Now" and the Sam Cooke-styled "There Is a Girl." ~ Richie Unterberger
2008 two CD set containing the Soul star's complete recordings issued on Dial Records in the 3000-series (before his hit 45 "Hold What You Got" launched the 4000-series). Joe Tex became a major name in Soul music when his ballad 'Hold What You've Got' took him into the US Top 10 in early 1965; the first of some 30 hit singles and a dozen best-selling LPs during the next 15 years of his recording career on the Dial label up to the time of ...
