Coast II Coast album
$14.29 A veteran of 10 albums at the age of 26 and an acclaimed member of Houston's Screwed Up Click, Z-Ro is much more complex than his surface or the simple intro of THE LIFE OF JOSEPH W. MCVEY may imply. Prolific output isn't the only thing he has in common with hardcore legends such as Too Short and Rap-A-Lot icon Scarface; Z-Ro also cuts his hard-edged street delivery with a haunting, almost hypnotic, introspection.
As this album reveals, Z-Ro deeply feels every word he sings. With "I Hate U B***h," the song is not so much a misogynistic rant as the pained, primal gut-reaction of a devoted man who's been hurt by the object of his affection (the line after the title is "I never thought I would say [it]"). On the melodic "Why?," he ponders the insanity of the thug life, wishing he could be loving and simple, spiritual and comfortable, but uncertain of how to find his escape. THE LIFE OF JOSEPH MCVEY reveals a tortured soul who concurrently knows himself and doesn't understand a thing, making this an achingly honest record that deserves to break Z-Ro through to new audiences.
This is an example of the Southern Rap "screwed" mix style.

Coast II Coast CD music
$15.05 2005's THE FOUNDATION marks the return of Houston, TX kings of controversy the Geto Boys, and reunites all three longstanding members--Scarface, Willie D., and Bushwick Bill--after nearly a decade. The record stays true to the complex, conflicted, horror-drenched world the trio conjured up in its early days, with the music recalling the group's heyday of stark albums such as WE CAN'T BE STOPPED. There's a wisdom in the Geto Boys sticking to beats virtually unaltered since the late1980s; considering that ...

| | Funk Soul Brothers CD (2000)
Coast II Coast music CDs
$9.35 As whistle-stop tours of funk go, this is pretty interesting, consisting of 16 cuts mostly drawn from early 1970s records, though a few rather ill-fitting efforts from the early 1980s slip in. Only one of these songs, Curtis Mayfield's "Freddie's Dead," is famous, though other respected gents dot the set, some known more for straight-ahead soul or soul-jazz than for funk: Aaron Neville, Lee Dorsey, Roy Ayers, Jimmy McGriff, the Meters, and Bobby Womack. Filling out the program are names that at this point are mostly known to aficionados, like Ripple, O'Donel Levy, S.O.U.L, and Sir Joe Quarterman & Free Soul. The lack of big stars or a solid thematic center might put some off, but for funk fans seeking some good off-the-beaten-track sides, this is recommended, both for its quality and eclecticism. It covers credible James Brown knockoffs, like Sir Joe Quarterman & Free Soul's "(I Got) So Much Trouble in My Mind," Moody Scott's "I Don't Dig No Phony Part 2," and Eddie Bo's "If It's Good to You (It's Good for You)"; Maceo & All the King's Men's "Got to Get Cha" comes by its James Brown influence honestly, as these fellows (led by saxophonist Maceo Parker) were in Brown's band in the late 1960s. Lee Dorsey's "Yes We Can," from 1971, predates the more famous Pointer Sisters hit cover of the tune. Ripple show a strong Sly Stone influence on "I Don't Know ...

| | Deja Voodoo Band Back For More... CD (2005)
Coast II Coast album
$11.49 The Deja Voodoo Band features DC (Harmonica, Vocals), Mark Verba (Guitars, Vocals), Wil Jones (Drums, Vocals), and Todd Becker (Bass). Their new CD is titled "Back For More..." and includes mostly original material with three covers, 11 songs in all. Lookin' Back (Gary Moore) starts the set in fine fashion. Listen to DC blow the harp and tell me if you don't hear Charlie Musslewhite. Good vocals, too. What impressed me was Verba's guitar work. Creative, but not rushed. There's a little battle here from both harmonica and guitar for supremacy. Who wins? The listener. I'm Runnin' is the first original DVB tune on this CD, and it's a good one. Nice blues number that would fit well into any club on Maxwell St. (Chicago). You remember that Low Rider (War) was recorded without the benefits of guitars or harmonica. Not on this cover. Jones and Becker lay down a funky little bass groove, and Verba and DC float over the top of it, creating a fusion of rock, jazz, blues, funk, etc...very cool. Panhead is another cover from DVB, a driving instrumental which features sweet "wah wah" style string bending. Box & Load is another original, and the strongest of them all. What great blues/rock recording doesn't have an homage to the working man? Two at Ten, Ten at Two is also an original. DC and the band slow down the pace on this one and create a pure blues tune dripping with testosterone laced lyrical inside jokes. Heidi's Hoedown is another instrumental original that features some nice changes. Great road song. Porn on Steroids is original and must have ...
