Slobberbone's second record pushes the country-rock concept to its logical extremes, fusing authentic roots trappings -- fiddles, dobros and the like -- with punk-metal rave-ups similar in spirit to AC/DC. The juxtaposition works: Brent Best is a fine songwriter, equally comfortable moving from bracing punk numbers like "Haze of Drink" to long, mournful guitar jams like "Get Gone Again" to quiet country sketches like "Little Drunk Fists"; combined with his band's impressive sonic reach, Barrel Chested is a real treat. ~ Jason Ankeny

Barrel Chested album
$11.45 To anyone unfamiliar with Slobberbone, the band's name will probably be a puzzler: What kind of music would a band called Slobberbone make? Country-rock? Rock? Cowpunk? In most cases, the problem could be solved by placing the disc in the player and giving it a spin, but in the case of Slippage, that would only raise more questions. The first five or six songs sound like rock with a punk edge. Unlike earlier albums, there isn't a mandolin or dobro in sight. But just when the listener thinks he or she has it all figured out, Slobberbone delivers a fine country version of "To Love Somebody" followed by a countrified "Find the Out," complete with a hip harmonica solo. Clearly, vocalist Brent Best, guitarist Jess Barr, bassist Brian Lane, and drummer Tony Harper are comfortable in both modes. One also begins to suspect that Slippage refers to the fine line between straight rock and alternative country. In fact, all that's needed to travel between one genre and the other is a slight vocal inflection and ...
| | Calexico Feast Of Wire CD (2003)
Barrel Chested CD music
$12.85 Calexico streamlined its eclectic sound a bit on this 2003 release, adding a pop sensibility to the band's already-exciting mixture of Latin-tinged Southwestern twang and jazzy, atmospheric sophistication. Most notably, FEAST OF WIRE features more of multi-instrumentalist Joey Burns's voice (Burns co-founded the band along with drummer John Convertino). On "Quattro (World Drifts In)," which combines Burns's under-the-radar singing with a guitar-driven song structure, Calexico sounds like it might even sneak onto mainstream FM radio. But the breezy accessibility is deceptive, because, over the course of FEAST, the ensemble is remarkably experimental and adventurous.
The giddy-up rhythms of "Close Behind," complete with accordion, sweeping strings, and lap steel, prove the band's mastery ...
| | Gun Club Miami CD (1982)
Barrel Chested music CDs
$11.55 While the Gun Club's debut, FIRE OF LOVE, was a masterpiece of untamed punk blues, follow-up album MIAMI, produced by Blondie's Chris Stein, achieves a fuller sound and a more varied stylistic palette without sacrificing any of its predecessor's intensity. The revved-up ...
| | Slobberbone Everything You Thought Was Right Was Wrong Today CD (2000)
Barrel Chested songs
$12.59 "We are a rock band, pure and simple," says gravelly-voiced lead singer Brent Best, but as this third release from the Texas-based outfit makes clear it isn't so simple after all. The group have staked out a rather original space somewhere between country and punk rock, and they've filled it with quirky characters, memorable stories, and high-octane music that refuses to be pinned down and categorized. The instrumentation ranges from fiddle and mandolin to accordion and tuba; the sound is sometimes folk-country delicate, sometimes frenzied hard rock, though it leans more to the latter than the former. As for the lyrics, Slobberbone's ideas occasionally run out before a track ends, but they're generally dark and/or funny, and more than a little twisted. This release finds them expanding their horizons from ...
| | Slobberbone Crow Pot Pie CD (1996)
Barrel Chested album
$9.79 On Crow Pot Pie, Slobberbone rambles through 11 slabs of drunken country-rock with the reckless intensity of an ill-tempered bronco. With that energy and the gruff vocals of singer/guitarist Brent Best, this Denton, Texas band thrusts rock back into the country-rock equation. The themes covered here ...
| | Suicide First Album CDs (1977)
Barrel Chested CD music
$12.59 Seven years after the duo's inception, Suicide's debut album finally sneaked out in 1977 on the coat tails of the nascent New York punk scene. If its aim had been to confuse, startle, or repulse, SUICIDE succeeded in spades. By the same token, if a part-time sculptor and avant-garde jazz musician form a two-chord synthesizer duo and call it Suicide, commercial considerations are presumably low on their list of priorities. SUICIDE was a record destined to have future journalists reaching for words like "seminal". Synth duos start here.
SUICIDE's bleak, one-act plays of violence and sexual deviance, and that lo-fi monotone punctuated by sleazy groans and horrifying screams, still induce nervous tension despite the passing years. To hear Alan Vega, an Elvis caricature out of time, crooning "Girl" is unsettling enough. When he acts out the desperation of "Frankie Teardrop" over ...
