In 1982, soul goddess Chaka Khan did the unexpected when she recorded this excellent, straight-ahead jazz LP. Regrettably, the album was released under the name Echoes of an Era instead of under Khan's own name -- so it wasn't nearly the big seller it probably would have been if Elektra had fully exploited Khan's connection with the project. But while Echoes of an Era was the victim of questionable marketing, it was a creative triumph. Joined by Joe Henderson on tenor sax, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet and flugelhorn, Chick Corea on acoustic piano, Stanley Clarke on upright bass, and Lenny White on drums, Khan demonstrates that she is quite capable of handling hard bop and straight-ahead jazz. Corea, Clarke, and White had all been members of the fusion powerhouse of the '70s Return to Forever, but make no mistake -- Echoes of an Era is very much an acoustic bop date. With White producing and Corea handling the arrangements, the singer swings aggressively and really soars on Thelonious Monk's "I Mean You" and Duke Ellington's "Take the 'A' Train," as well as on "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most," "All of Me," and "I Loves You Porgy." In fact, Khan's jazz singing is so strong that one cannot help but wonder what would have happened if jazz had been her dominant direction instead of R&B. ~ Alex Henderson
Echoes Of An Era Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) One of the best of my original wax collection I had this on wax when it was first released in 1982. In my divorce I lost it and hubby can't find it :). I have been hunting for this CD for the last 10 years - it was really the only thing I wanted from my old collection. Chaka surprised the musicians with her talent, as I seem to remember she was a last minute stand in for a more traditional female jazz vocalist. With low expectations she blows everyone away and from then on it seems she added more jazz oriented tunes to her own releases. Well worth the time and money of any true straight ahead jazz fan. Great, But With Mistakes Drummer, Lenny White, assembles an allstar cast to showcase Chaka Khan's first presentation as a jazz singer. The band is great, especially Chick Corea (piano) and, the always outstanding, Freddie Hubbard (trumpet). Lenny White, as a producer, was determined to do this album in one take. This put unnecessary pressure on Chaka. On her heroic performance of the demanding,'Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most' we can actually hear one of the strongest singers around crack notes- three times! 'High Wire', 'I Loves You Porgy', and 'I Mean You' are the best among many highlights, but White should've given Chaka a little rest and a coupla retakes. Chaka wouldn't record a jazz record again for 20 years (see 'ClassiKhan'). This great record could've been greater if White would have been more sensitive toward his famous star vocalist. Echoes Of An Era
$7.95 Includes liner notes by Patrick Milligan & Alec Cumming. Digitally remastered by Andrew Garver & Bill Inglot. Audio Remasterers: Andrew Garver; Bill Inglot. Arrangers: Larry Wilcox; Bob Alcivar; Bill Holman; Bones Howe; Burt Bacharach; Carole Bayer Sager. Like Rhino's exquisite three-disc The Look of Love, this set does not concentrate on proper Burt Bacharach recordings. Instead, it contains versions of Bacharach's greatest songs, usually the greatest versions -- or cuts that are damn close to the greatest versions. And, really, that's what makes it magical, since Bacharach wasn't the best interpreter of his material -- vocalists like Dionne ...
