Gérard Badini is a well-known name in French jazz circles, due to his prolific recording dates, though few of his albums have appeared outside of Europe. The Swing Machine is part of Universal's excellent but now-deleted Jazz in Paris series, documenting a session led by the tenor saxophonist in 1975 with pianist Raymond Fol, bassist Michel Gaudry, and former Duke Ellington drummer Sam Woodyard. Right out of the box, they swing like mad with a superb take of "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)," with each musician featured in turn. Badini wrote the wailing blues "Sam Woodyard Is Back in Town," showcasing the gritty side of his playing. Fol frequently shows off his obvious affinity for Duke Ellington by incorporating a few of the bandleader's piano licks into his playing. Woodyard had essentially been on skid row when Badini found him, but he managed to dry out enough to do justice to the music throughout the date. This is the extensive and powerful greatest hits release which chronicles the musical career of the talented singer with 100 songs.
Since her death from cancer in 1966, Alma Cogan's reputation has rested largely on the record-breaking string of hits she scored in the U.K. during the 1950s, and for the brief resurgence of pop credibility engendered by her friendship with the Beatles. She was the first person Paul McCartney played "Yesterday" to after he composed it, and her final album, the superlative Alma, featured three further Lennon/McCartney compositions, each rendered with spectacular style. That particular album was reissued in the late '90s, as part of EMI's centenary celebrations. The remainder of Cogan's catalog, however, lay either on old, deleted vinyl or scattered piecemeal across a sequence of well-intentioned, but scarcely representative, hits collections. By 2006, country music's eternal sweetheart, Barbara Mandrell, was a little bit out of the spotlight. This loving tribute album places her back in her rightful place, with reverent and straightforward covers of her best material. While most of the arrangements replicate the originals almost exactly (albeit with powerhouse singers like Gretchen Wilson, Shelby Lynn, and Terri Clark at the mic), there are some nice surprises: LeAnn Rimes turns in a sultry and soulful reading of "If Loving You Is Wrong, I Don't Wanna Be Right," and Dierks Bentley reworks the sprightly "Fast Lanes & Country Roads" into a pistol-hot outlaw country rocker.
