| | Henri Crolla Jazz In Paris: Quand Refleuriront Les Lilas Blancs CD Henri Crolla Discography of CDs
Personnel: Henri Crolla, Maurice Meunier, Michel Hausser, Martial Solol, Maurice Vander. This compilation collects two sessions from 1955 by guitarist Henri Crolla, a talented but quirky musician whose behavior rivaled the late Django Reinhardt, even if he was not as advanced a player as the legendary Gypsy. The first six tracks feature pianist Martial Solal (who recorded under the pseudonym Lalos Bing), bassist Emmanuel Soudieux, and drummer Jacques David, with the band exploring a number of popular French songs in a rather subdued bop setting, along with standards like "Have You Met Miss Jones?" and "I Only Have Eyes for You." The routine is fairly set, with Crolla's understated solos followed by a brief chorus from Solal and none of the tunes stretching much beyond the two-minute mark. The remaining seven selections have Maurice Vander taking over on piano and tenor saxophonist Maurice Meunier (vibraphonist Michel Hausser is listed as present on all tracks but is not audible on any of them), with the group focusing exclusively on American standards and one bop favorite. Fortunately this group is able to stretch out a bit more, with Crolla showing off his chops a bit more and Meunier switching to clarinet for several cuts, highlighted by the brisk, playful renditions of "Sweet Georgian Brown" and Charlie Parker's "Yardbird Suite." Like many artists in the Universal Music Jazz in Paris reissue series, Henri Crolla may not be a familiar name to many jazz fans, but his music is well worth exploring. ~ Ken Dryden Jazz In Paris: Quand Refleuriront Les Lilas Blancs Music Henri Crolla Jazz In Paris: Quand Refleuriront Les Lilas Blancs Songs Jazz In Paris: Quand Refleuriront Les Lilas Blancs Music Jazz In Paris: Quand Refleuriront Les Lilas Blancs Review

Jazz In Paris: Quand Refleuriront Les Lilas Blancs
$9.59 Personnel: Art Farmer (trumpet); Hank Mobley (tenor saxophone); Kenny Drew (piano); Addison Farmer (bass); Elvin Jones (drums). Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, New Jersey on November 23, 1956. Originally released on New Jazz (8203). Includes liner notes by Ira Gitler. Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). Personnel: Hank Mobley (tenor saxophone); Kenny Drew (piano); Addison Farmer (bass guitar); Elvin Jones (drums). Audio Remasterer: Rudy Van Gelder. Art Farmer brought great sophistication and refinement to the trumpet, and later to the flugelhorn--the latter eventually became his horn of choice. On this 1956 recording date, Farmer is joined by many of the original "young lions" of the post bebop era, including the always-swinging tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley. The trumpeter's quintet performs a set of mostly originals written by Mobley, Farmer, and pianist Kenny Drew, with only one standard heard here--the lovely (and often overlooked) Schwartz-Dietz piece "By Myself." Each tune is a gem, but the best is left for last on FARMER'S MARKET. The vigorous "Wailin' with Hank" features a burning solo by Farmer, who trades in his characteristically smooth lyricism for a harder-edged, punchy sound (a la Clifford Brown). Elvin Jones's drum solo on this selection adds even more fire to the track. Overall, FARMER'S MARKET is made up of elegant performances that straddle the boundaries between the so-called "hot" and "cool" schools of jazz. It is this ability to defy strict categorization that makes this album such a compelling listen. In 1956, trumpeter Art Farmer was teamed with tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley and pianist Horace Silver in one of the most vital and important modern jazz groups of the seminal hard bop era. But it was Farmer here who was emerging as a leader, with Mobley tagging along on this excellent date. Not to say that Mobley was a slouch, and indeed far from it as a peer of Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane. Fact is, Mobley led the band with Farmer and Silver, but achieved his greatest acclaim alongside trumpeters Lee Morgan, and eventually Miles Davis. For Farmer, this recording ...
