| | Tommy James/Christian Of The World CD (1999)
Sweet Sixteen Vol. 6 music CDs
$10.59 After he broke with the Shondells, Tommy James took some time off out of the spotlight but he came roaring back with his first solo album, 1970's Tommy James. It features the hit song "Ball and Chain" and seven other songs that were not a great departure from the sound he had with the Shondells: up-tempo songs with big hooks, great vocals (lead and background), and a slightly psychedelic feeling. Tracks like the driving "Ball and Chain," the anthemic "Come to Me," and the pounding, bubblegum-tasting "I Lost My Baby" are as good as anything James had done recently. The only track where he stumbles is on the attempted hard rock boogie of "Quicksilver." Some people just aren't meant to rock that way -- and James is one of them. The most interesting tune on the record is "Meet the Comer," which sounds musically like the downer version of "Crystal Blue Persuasion," but is actually the beginning of James' shift to uplifting religious themes that would really blossom on his second solo record. Christian of the World is not a concept record as such, but there is a theme of spirituality running through the lyrics. The title track is a sun-kissed plea for salvation, "Sing Sing Sing" rejects ...
| | Jekyll & Hyde: The Gothic Musical Thriller CDs (1995)
Sweet Sixteen Vol. 6 songs
$27.05 The second version of Frank Wildhorn and Leslie Bricusse's Jekyll & Hyde, referred to as "The Complete Work, " is certainly more extensive than its predecessor, a 1990 "highlights" album sung by Colm Wilkinson and Linda Eder. That album was dominated by Wildhorn's pop ballads-"Once Upon A Dream," "This Is The Moment," "Someone Like You," "No One Knows Who I Am," "A New Life"-and Eder's Streisand-like belting. There is no lack of that sort of thing here: In fact, with "Take Me As I Am," "Sympathy, Tenderness," "Letting Go," and "In His Eyes," there's even more of it. But, extending over two discs and two hours, there is also the Robert Louis Stevenson tale, told in musical recitative and even in occasional character songs that, unlike the many ballads, are even performed with British accents. If Jekyll & Hyde is the story of a man divided into two parts, the score mirrors that form, as the plot songs contrast with an album's worth of songs that all sound like the sort of thing that plays over the closing credits of romantic movies, bland lyrics of love and self-fulfillment sung by soaring voices over straining strings. It is often true that concept albums, since they have been designed as such, work better as sheer listening experiences than cast albums drawn from actual theatrical productions, which often come off as souvenirs. This was true of the early Andrew Lloyd Webber works, for example, and it is true here. One can follow the story easily. In fact, if anything, there's too much plot; often, ...
| | Jeremy Enigk Return Of The Frog Queen CD (1996)
Sweet Sixteen Vol. 6 album
$10.15 Great surprise. Return of the Frog Queen comes out of nowhere, in no way the follow-up to Jeremy Enigk's two previous LPs with Sunny Day Real Estate. Enigk chooses a really remarkable path, taking his highly dramatic, angst-ridden singing to a totally new sound. Now he favors harshly played acoustics. Way more surprising, Enigk lassos a whole orchestra to flesh out the background of each song! Enigk still screams like the abandoned child of Plastic Ono Band Lennon and "Heart Shaped Box" Cobain, a real shake-up. Likewise, his orchestra has equally dangerous intents. The most startling musical moment of all 1996 is the second half of the otherwise buried "Shade and the Black Hat," where the pent-up frustration inherent in this whole LP is suddenly let loose like Enigk were the delirious keeper of Pandora's box. He pounds a piano and howls like his wife just left him for his best friend, as the violins, violas, and cellos scrape at their strings as if to break them, and the flutes, piccolos, trumpets, trombones, French horns, and clarinets blow like they were hired by a wolf to blast a few recalcitrant pigs' houses down. The waves of classical ...
