Comparisons to Enya and other hypnotic vocalists abound, but dedicated listeners will hear something much deeper than moody pop in Premal?s chants and mantras. ?Om Tare? is a traditional, ancient mantra offered to the goddess of infinite compassion. Its arresting groove seems genuine and reverent, not manipulated by modern studio controls. That?s not to say that EMBRACE doesn?t feature top production skills. Produced by Premal?s long-time partner Miten and world-music veteran Kit Walker, each track is polished, employing just enough studio wizardry to sound contemporary without tipping into New Age sentimentality. Unlike other chant CDs, Premal sounds relaxed, joyous, and open, using varied rhythms and loose phrasing. Such pleasurable listening shouldn?t be reserved only for the yoga mat?EMBRACE is a perfectly soothing and restorative listening experience.

Making his technical debut as a songwriter (technical in that his prose poems serve as a lyric source on several tracks), Art Garfunkel takes top billing in what actually qualifies as a collaboration with two other singer/songwriters, Nashville's Buddy Mondlock and L.A.-based Maia Sharp; producer/songwriter Billy Mann plays an essential creative role as well. For all the diverse input, this remains a Garfunkel project at heart. His airy, delicate singing, remarkably identical in quality to his earliest recordings some 40 years earlier, provides the essential textural reference; Mondlock's vocals uncannily replicate Garfunkel's from the opening moments of "Bounce" and elsewhere throughout the album. Only two of these songs were written by outsiders, and these -- the self-consciously buoyant "Young and Free" and uncomfortably precious "What I Love About Rain" -- don't match the rest in either musical or lyrical accomplishment. Collectables presents a surprisingly logical double reissue of two great Atlantic albums by pianist, composer, arranger and bandleader John Lewis. The Wonderful World of Jazz was originally released in 1960; Evolution (the first of two by that title) came out in 1999. These albums complement each other quite well; much better in fact than some other Collectables two-fers.
