This can be seen as the third installment in the series of Nick Cave albums that started with 1997's THE BOATMAN'S CALL; like it's two predecessors, NOCTURAMA is full of stately piano ballads, and largely absent of the barbed-wire rantings that typified Cave's earlier recordings. While past albums painted Cave as the grisly Edgar Allen Poe of rock, NOCTURAMA and its brethren take a marked turn toward more personal, sometimes even romantic themes. Naturally there's still an underlying darkness and disturbance throughout, but overall Cave seems to have turned himself into something of a Bacharach for the post-Goth set. Colored by the mournful violin of the Dirty Three's Warren Ellis and Cave's own prominent piano and organ, most of the tracks perambulate quietly along, delivering subtly disquieting but masterfully crafted observations on the world.
The two exceptions to the quietude are the garagey "Dead Man in My Bed," hailing back to the sound of TENDER PREY's "Deanna," and the unhinged epic closer "Babe, I'm On Fire." The latter is essentially a 15-minute, psychopathic update of Cole Porter's "Let's Do It," with Cave giving full bore to his gloriously twisted imagination in describing the characters from every walk of life who are slaves to passion. The controlled chaos of the Bad Seeds is at its savage best here as they roar and clang away behind him, like the carnivorous Id that he's barely managing to keep under control. It's a powerful, highly original track, and an easy highlight here.

CMJ (1/27/03, p.6) - "...Each song on NOCTURAMA is delicately crafted around Cave's despondent vocals, which mournfully convey his daunting, yet poetic, story-telling lyrics amidst a wash of delicate piano and string arrangements..." | | Seekers Complete CDs (1997) Box Set
Nocturama music CDs
$41.05 This 5 cd box set anthology features a staggering 126 tracks by Australian folk stars The Seekers features "This Land Is Your Land," "Children Go Where I Send," "Open Up Them Pearly Gates," "Dese Bones G'wine Rise Ag," "Chilly Winds," "Light From The Lighthouse," "Waltzing Matilda," and "Lemon Tree."
Five CDs on the Seekers may seem like overkill, and the $70 list price may provoke an "in-your-dreams" response even from fans. But this set works -- one listen fully justifies it on musical terms; the cost is only a little higher than comparable five-disc sets, and the unique range of material makes it a bargain. The set is broken up into five volumes, the first (1963-64) covering the group's early history: their original 12-song demo, coupled with parts of their debut Australian album, Introducing the Seekers, and their first album for England's World Record Club. The music is a mix of traditional Australian, English, and American folk songs spiced with American gospel. They do themselves credit, whether they're touching on familiar folk standards ("If I Had a Hammer") or Australian repertory ("Waltzing Matilda," "With My Swag All On My Shoulder"), all displaying a beguiling purity and infectious joy in the singing. The second (1964-65) and third (1966-67) discs cover their album tracks from the group's classic era, from early 1964 up to the end of their last full year of success in 1967. The sources for those 40 songs are impeccable, although this is also the period is covered well by various hits anthologies. The fourth, "Hits, B-sides, and the '90's," pushes the group's hit singles, starting with "I'll Never Find Another You" and ending with "Days of My Life," onto a separate disc. The eight 1990s tracks, cut in the ...

Nocturama album
$22.35 This comb through the vaults of the minor British metal-progressive band is heavily weighted toward demos, outtakes, and live cuts from 1980-1981, all of them previously unreleased. | | Fela Kuti Open & Close/Afrodisiac CD (2001)
Nocturama music CDs
$13.95 Includes liner notes by Jacqueline Grandchamp-Thiam, Rikki Stein and Mabinuori Kayode Idowu.
Digitally remastered by Pompon (Translab Paris, Paris, France).
This CD reissue combines two early-'70s albums -- Open & Close and Afrodisiac -- on a single disc. Open & Close has just three songs, all in the ten- to 15-minute range, mixing some of the improvisational verve of jazz into Kuti's Afro-funk stew. There's a bittersweet, faintly melancholy tone to some of the progressions that differentiates this from much African pop of then and later, and the half-dozen percussionists set a good bed on which the horns and electric keyboards swap lines. "Gbagada Gbagada Gbogodo Gbogodo" is highlighted by extensive call-and-response vocals between Kuti and the band. The four (as usual, lengthy) songs occupying Aphrodisiac had been originally recorded in Nigeria as 45 rpm releases, though that album consists of re-recordings of these done in London in the early '70s. (Confusingly, one part of the liner notes gives the years 1972-1973 as the recording dates, while another section says they were cut in 1971.) While it's true that Fela Kuti's records from this period are pretty similar to each other, in their favor they're not boring. These four workouts, all sung in Nigerian, are propulsive mixtures of funk and African music, avoiding the homogeneity of much funk and African records of later vintage, done ...
