The Soundtrack for director Ronald F. Maxwell's Civil War film GODS AND GENERALS consists of a score by John Frizell and Randy Edelman, book-ended by original songs from ex-October Project vocalist Mary Fahl and folk/rock icon Bob Dylan. The former track, "Going Home" is a haunting, Celtic-influenced piece that sounds similar to the best work of June Tabor and Maddy Prior. Dylan's contribution is a typically insightful and poignant look at a difficult topic, and lends the proceedings a quiet grandeur. Musically, "'Cross The Green Mountain" recalls his early-'70s work with Leon Russell. Frizell and Edelman's score is appropriately melancholy and sweeping, perfectly reflecting the epic proportions and painful subject matter of the film. The best tracks pair the symphony orchestra with country fiddler extraordinaire Mark O'Connor and Chieftan's frontman Paddy Mahoney, who impart an air of 19th-century authenticity.

Excellent soundtrack The soundtrack for Ronald F. Maxwell's Civil War drama "Gods And Generals"may not reach the same heights musically or emotionally as the soundtrack for his first film "Gettysburg" - but it covers much of the same ground. There's a greater emphasis on traditional Irish music on this soundtrack. Add to this Mary Fahl's moving interpretation of "Going Home" which che cowrote. The song opens the album just like in the motion picture - and the video is included on the bonus DVD along with Bob Dylan's "Cross The Green Mountain" - but you'll probably prefer the CD-version of the song running for more than 8 minutes. It's a classic Dylan song with his brooding voice over a tight rhythm section and wonderful organ played by Benmont Tench.
The soundtrack is well suited for the DVA format, whcih would add more depth to the music and more details. Submitted by Sřren (Hvidovre, Denmark) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 0 of 1 found this helpful.
