MAMBO SINUENDO won the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Album. "Patricia" was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance.
Ry Cooder, the guitarist/composer/arranger behind the Buena Vista Social Club and numerous film scores (JOHNNY HANDSOME, PARIS, TEXAS), is back with a suave collection of tunes infused with more of the sinuous rhythms from Cuba. Just as we are comfortably settling into the seductive feel set up on the opening track, "Drume Negrita," enter Mr. Cooder's languorous pedal steel and we are transported beyond the south-of-the-border to a place both exotic and intriguing. On this set, Cooder is teamed with the leader of the popular 60'S and 70's group Los Zafiros, Manuel Galban. Galban and Cooder trade tasty and occasionally quirky riffs that put their distinctive guitars front and center. The mutual admiration these artists have for one another exudes a contagious warmth and wealth of good humor that underlies all the proceedings. The temperature rises on "Monte Adentro," courtesy of a wonderfully lucy-goosey rhythm section and a tres solo by Mr. Cooder and on the title track, a melody in signature style is served up by none other than Herb Albert.
As Cooder has written - ''You can look at this as a road trip through different worldless fantasy landscapes. Sometimes you're in bright daylight, sometimes the streets are dark & empty. You're riding with the Conjunto Sinuendo - drummers Jim Keltner & Joachim Cooder, Conga-player ''Anga'' Diaz, & bassist Cachaito Lopez, to hold you on the road. High performance Twang!'' Slipcase. Nonesuch. 2003.

Rolling Stone (3/6/03, p.69) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...Cooder and Galban play dueling guitars, but their skills are even more impressive when they play in unison..." Uncut (2/03, p.78) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...Agile, sexy, witty and lyrical, it's an exquisite album..." The Wire (4/03, p.70) - "...[A] labour of love....A series of mambo transformations, evoking fusions that arose in Cuba's clubs during the 1950s..." Ry Cooder Mambo Sinuendo Songs Mambo Sinuendo Music Review Average Rating: (3.8 out of 5 stars) Mixed results. I first heard excerpts of this album when Ry Cooder was interviewed on NPR's "All Things Considered" more than a year ago. I enjoyed the tracks they excerpted, but didn't see it in any local stores. I finally ordered it recently and found the style of the tracks varied greatly. I love the update of the 50's favorite, "Patricia." However, I tend to skip over some of the other tracks. A couple are very enjoyable, but a couple don't appeal to me at all. Submitted by woscar2 (Quitman, LA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Not Ry's strongest work; has some merit though I found this album disappointing. The last of Cooder's Cuban collaborations, my hopes were high. This is very different from the folksy feel of Buena Vista, Ibrahim Ferrer, etc and relies heavily on electric instruments. I love most of Ry's earlier electric work, but this music seems a little repetative (simple 2 chord jams and 3-4 cord progressions) without the inspired leads that characterize Cooder's other work. A hybrid of Cooder's previous approaches. On this album Cooder's tries for something in between his raw, bluesy solo albums and his recent polished collaborations. The result is unique and charming. Submitted by joshuah (Pittsburgh, PA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Very good indeed Ry comes back with another winner. This is just great to listen to; conjure up those sultry Cuban evenings and pour yourself another Margherita. I hear shades of 'Showtime', 'Chicken Skin Music' and 'Jazz', but it's original and good. Very good indeed! Submitted by a reviewer (London, UK) Was This Review Helpful? $12.95 Ratzinger finds new ways to torture his hardware by walking a path between :wumpscut:'s earlier, bleak electro sound; the noisier feel of releases such as Embryodead; and a new glimmer in the darkness. "Opening the Gates of Hell" is an expected :wumpscut: crafting of rough electro and punishing beats painted over with something goth and could be opening the gates if it was meaner and had teeth. :wumpscut: depart from formula, with the (deservedly) title track "Wreath of Barbs" presenting more than the usual routine -- the sonorous bass and slow avalanche tempo impel the track into a beautiful ...
| | Produced By Trevor Horn CDs (2005)
Mambo Sinuendo
$15.82 The producer-centered career-overview CD set has a good enough history (as anyone who owns Back to Mono would agree), but it's always nice to see obvious candidates finally get their due, and there's no question that Trevor Horn deserves it. Conceived as a companion to a celebratory concert covering a quarter-century of hits, Produced by Trevor Horn's two discs have an understandable focus on the first ten years of his career, beginning with his epochal hit as part of the Buggles, "Video Killed the Radio Star," in retrospect as simultaneously futuristic and nostalgic as prime Kraftwerk. To say that he helped own the '80s, particularly in Europe but with plenty of American and other worldwide hits, would be an understatement -- among the many numbers featured are ABC's "Poison Arrow" and "The Look of Love," Frankie Goes to Hollywood's "Relax" and "Two Tribes," Yes' "Owner of a Lonely Heart," Seal's "Crazy" and much more besides. Later work was more sporadic in terms of commercial profile but the choices for the compilation are interesting in that light -- work with Kirsty MacColl and, semi-notoriously, Belle & Sebastian goes unmentioned, but efforts for Shane MacGowan "You're the One," a duet with Máire Brennan of Clannad, the Frames, LeAnn Rimes and Lisa Stansfield get a nod, as well as the worldwide monster hit of t.A.T.u.'s "All the Things She Said."
