Closed Captioned; Soundtrack English In a dark futuristic world, literature, reading, and independent thought have been outlawed. The government has gone so far as to employ a special league of firemen to burn all books on sight. But when one otherwise obedient fireman (Oskar Werner) meets an intriguing revolutionary (Julie Christie), she provokes him to question the legitimacy of his actions. Tensions mount when he blatantly transgresses the very laws he's employed to enforce, and his terrified wife becomes an informant. Because the subject of censorship seems to be perpetually contemporary, one can argue that the significant social impact of FAHRENHEIT 451 will forever be current. François Truffaut's film is based on the best-selling novel by Ray Bradbury. Theatrical release: November 14, 1966
Shown at the Venice Film Festival, September 7, 1966.
FAHRENHEIT 451 was one of the first films to emerge from Universal Studios, London. It was also François Truffaut's first fully English language film.
Among the books burned in the film are novels of author Ray Bradbury and an issue of the French film journal Cahiers du Cinema, which Truffaut wrote for. Fahrenheit 451 Reviews: "...Truffaut's direction seems more Hitchcockian than ever..."

Fahrenheit 451 Movie Review Average Rating: (3.5 out of 5 stars) My Review This movie is a Statement about the direction the world is heading politically. It's a vision of YOUR future, where the news is altered to conform to Government standards of what people are allowed to know, and what they are led to believe to be true by the Government. In this movie's case, the reading of books is banned by the Government, because the rationale is, books make people unhappy with their lives. Instead of encouraging people to better themselves, the Government just bans books. Fahrenheit 451, by the way, is the temperature that books burn at, and the Fire Department has the job of finding peoples stashed books, and burning them. Every Collector should own this movie. Their Grandkids will be living this lifestyle. Submitted by My-Order (Vegas) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Extremely thought provoking! Fahrenheit 451 is a provocative movie that should remind us of the many freedoms that Americans and other free societies in the world enjoy. People who hate republicans and American ideals will love this movie. They will claim that the U.S. government is the same individual rights trampling, over-zealous government depicted in the movie. It is great that people can buy this movie from hundreds of sources, including this Web site, in America! Submitted by Bill (Chicago IL USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Ponder Carefully! With the backdrop of the 9/11/01 attack, and in light of recent moves by our government to make our nation more secure, we must be vigilant in seeing that our core freedoms are not abridged.
With the advent of military tribunals, expansion of phone tapping capabilities by law enforcement, revision of lawful detainment regulations, and increased paranoia/panic by the general public, the topic covered in Fahrenheit 451 is more relevant today than when the movie was made.
The banning/burning of books may not be far behind the above mentioned changes--if we do not guard ourselves against over-zealous governmental regulators of freedom.
Watch the movie, and be vigilant! Submitted by a reviewer (Weed,CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.
Great transfer, no extras I was thrilled to see a beautiful transfer of Fahrenheit 451, one of the best SF films of the '60s, I feel. But I was surprised that IMAGE, one of the better marketers of DVD, included no extras of any kind, not even a trailer. This is also the case for IMAGE's issues of Paramount Marx Bros. features, and more titles. Could this be a way to keep the costs of some titles down? Fahrenheit 451 film
$10.09 Don Siegel's cult masterpiece, interpreted as an allegory of both McCarthyism and Communism, is undoubtedly one of the screen's most disturbing evocations of paranoia. It stars Kevin McCarthy as Dr. Miles Binnell, a physician whose traumatized arrival in the emergency room of a San Francisco hospital leads the staff to believe he's lost his mind. In a series of flashbacks, he unwinds a bizarre account of his last few days. After his return from a trip to rural Santa Mira, his nurse, Sally (Jean Willes), explains that his office has been flooded with patients who have made appointments yet never appeared. Former girlfriend Becky Driscoll (Dana Wynter) tells him that she's unable to rid herself of the belief that the man claiming to be her uncle is an impostor. A hysterical young boy refuses to return home, claiming that his mother is not his mother. Miles's concern over this pattern of incidents, temporarily allayed by some jargon from the town psychiatrist, is newly aroused when he gets a phone call from friend Jack Belicec (King Donovan), who begs him to come over and take a look at the strange mannequinlike figure that's suddenly appeared on his pool table. This exceptionally well written and ...

| | Day The Earth Stood Still DVD (1951)
Fahrenheit 451 movie DVD
$10.29 Beginning with a documentary style that immediately hooks the viewer, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, based on the Harry Bates short story "Farewell to the Master," becomes as much a human interest story as it does a sci-fi B-movie classic. The film soberly depicts the arrival of an alien dignitary, Klaatu (Michael Rennie), who has come to earth with his deadly robot, Gort (Lock Martin), to deliver the message that earthlings must stop warring among themselves--or else. After being shot at by ignorant, panicky military guards, Klaatu is brought to a Washington, D.C., hospital, where he begs a sympathetic but frank Major White (Robert Osterloh) to gather all the world's leaders so he can tell them more specifically what he has come 250 million miles to warn them about. Losing patience, Klaatu slips into the human world, adapting a false identity and living at a boarding house where he meets a smart woman with a conscience, Helen Benson (Patricia Neal), and her inquisitive son, Bobby (Billy Gray). Both mother and son soon find themselves ...
| | Metropolis DVD (1927) Full Frame; Black & White
Fahrenheit 451 video
$22.09 METROPOLIS, a visionary and elaborate spectacle by director Fritz Lang is an epic projection of a futuristic city divided into a working and an elite class. Its exhilarating climax brings the city to its knees, as the classes clash against each other.
In the 21st century, a de-humanized proletariat labors non-stop in a miserable subterranean city beneath a luxurious city of mile-high skyscrapers, flying automobiles, palatial architectural idylls, tubes and tunnels. With stunningly inventive special effects, Lang's allegorical narrative and architectural vision creates a highly stylized vision of a not-so-unlikely future (especially for 1926 when the film was made). As the elite frolic above the clouds, thousands of miserable workers toil night and day inside the belly of the gigantic machine that runs the entire city. Metropolis is controlled by a sinister authoritarian whose son, Freder, rejects his father's callous philosophy and attitude towards laborers. Meek though they ...
