Once again led by madman Devin Townsend, the extremists in Strapping Young Lad are back after an almost six year hiatus with what will be on of the heaviest releases to see the light of day in 2003. Fueled by the events of 9/11, the band has never sounded more savage. Also featuring the talents of Gene Hoglan on drums (Dark Angel, Death) and Jed Simon & Byron Stroud (formerly of Front Line Assembly). Century Media.
Strapping Young Lad: David Townsend (vocals, guitar); Jed Simon (guitar); Byron Stroud (bass); Gene Hoglan (drums). Producers: Strapping Young Lad, Devin Townsend. Recorded at Armoury Studios, Hipposonic Studios, and Diamond Sharp Studios, Vancouver, British Columbia. Personnel: Devin Townsend (vocals, guitar, keyboards, sampler); Marnie Mains, Chris "The Heathen" Valagao, Carla Levis (vocals); Jed Simon (guitar, keyboards, sampler); Gene Hoglan (drums). Audio Mixer: Shaun Thingvold. Recording information: Armoury Studios, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; Diamond Sharp Studios, Vancouver, British Columbia, Can; Hipposonic Studios, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Photographers: Daniel Michael Collins; Nico Wobben. The press release for SYL points out that the inspiration behind the album was borne out of the horror surrounding the events of 9/11, and, later, says bluntly, "This is, without question, war music." And while the music certainly sounds like Armageddon, the lyrics are in fact angry, incredulous diatribes against not only the futility of war, but rape, hypocrisy, and hate. Devin Townsend's sense of humor surfaces here and there, particularly in "Dirt Pride" ("dripping...gigbutt; dirt pride...my pride; dripping...bunksock"), but without the lyric sheet you wouldn't hear it; Strapping Young Lad's apocalyptic death metal soundscapes are the aural equivalent of endlessly spraying shrapnel, or the nightmare hum of locusts, or the earth swallowing itself. Meanwhile, the ethereal keyboard washes and occasional bits of melodic singing only heighten the biblical intensity. Not for the faint of heart. ~ Andy Hinds

| Strapping Young Lad Music Strapping Young Lad Music Review Average Rating: (3.8 out of 5 stars) This album is pure madness...BRUTALITY AT ITS BEST! When I first heard about Strapping Young Lad, all I heard was good things about 'em. So, I gave it a try with this album. I was BLOWN AWAY! This is one of the best metal records...PERIOD! Its brutal, brutal, brutal. Keep up the good work! Submitted by GodsGothChildX (Glenshaw, PA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
solid metal...no craziness This is a very very good metal album, HOWEVER, it doesn't sound like a strapping young lad record. The riffs are there and the drumming from Gene Hoglan is amazing, but overall, this album lacks the crazed mania that made Heavy as...heavy thing and City trademark Devin Townsend inspired masterpieces. awesome This guy above me is a stupid idiot, the new SYL album completely destroys me. It is just as good as the previous albums Submitted by a reviewer (Anchorage, Alaska, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Excellent! This is an excellent heavy album from a true musical genius! My only complaint is that it is on the short side. Submitted by a reviewer (Boston, MA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Dissapointment x Infinity? Well Well Well, the long awaited return of a new SYL album is over,
this CD has been hyped up for a long time, i know i have been waiting
for it and pumped up for it's release, but too bad it "SUX!"
Devin Townsend has lost it, when it comes to heavy music
and making it sound good, "City" was an absolute masterpeice of sheer genious
now 6 years later the self titled effort sounds like any other generic wannabe
metal band's CD after listening to it, i found maybe 2 good songs on it, i know
i am being hrash and perhaps unfair to expect another "City" but man, this album
just sounds terrible, It is almost as if he left it way too long or something, he
has been making these lollipop candyarse albums for some time now (a reference to his solo
CD's) and i think it has definatley effected his ability to create captivating new
material for the SYL Franchise as he seems to refer to it as???? (Whatever).
Anyhow i am very dissapointed and will gladly always enjoy "Heavy as a really heavy thing" &
"City" this CD i am praying will grow on me in some strange way but i doubt it, just
look at the lyrics and how they have been constructed "Ridiculous" is the word that
comes to mind, i feel he has done a S.H.I.T effort on perpose due to his past battles
with Century Media records, as long ago as 1999, he wanted to always do a follow up
to "City" on his "Heavy Devy" record label and then the ensuing wait occured, the stupid thing
is, is that it is partialy realesed through "Century Media" anyhow? perhaps 6 years was too long
to try to outwait your contract? or what the hell ever he was pissing around with,
the force has now left Devin's body and this is perhaps is his last laugh against all
the demanders of a new SYL (CD) who know's, Anyhow long live the old stuff!

Strapping Young Lad
$11.99 Lamb Of God: Randy Blythe (vocals); Willie Adler, Mark Morton (guitar); John Campbell (bass); Chris Adler (drums). Additional personnel: Chris Poland, Devin Townsend. Recorded at Montana Incorporated, Richmond, Virginia. Personnel: Randy Blythe (vocals); Mark Morton, Willie Adler (guitar); Christine Adler (drums). Audio Mixers: Lamb of God; Shaun Thingvold. Recording information: Montana, Inc., Richmond, VA. Photographer: Daragh McDonagh. Unknown Contributor Role: Chris Poland. Arranger: Lamb of God. Lamb of God 's New American Gospel debut featured a caustic yet lucid version of post-Pantera death metal, surprisingly effective songwriting, massive amounts of confidence for a brand new band, and, to be honest, a really annoying drum sound (rather like tightly skinned tin cans). Even though the latter point is certainly subject to opinion, at least the other two positive attributes can be partly explained by the group having already cut ...
| | Arch Enemy Anthems Of Rebellion CD (2003) Bonus CD
Strapping Young Lad
$13.79 2003 release for the thrash, power metal band features 13 tracks. Century Media.
Initial pressings contain a bonus CD containing live tracks. Arch Enemy: Angela Gossow (vocals); Michael Amott, Christopher Amott (guitar); Sharlee D'Angelo (bass); Daniel Erlandsson (drums). Anthems of Rebellion continues in the same vein as Wages of Sin. Arch Enemy doesn't come up with the most original ideas or riffs, but the twin guitar attack of Christopher ...
| | Dimmu Borgir Death Cult Armageddon CD (2003)
Strapping Young Lad
$13.55 The band recorded Death Cult Armageddon with a full-blown orchestra, this time with a forty-eight piece orchestra from Prague. Returning with manic axe-man Galder (founder/mastermind of Old Man's Child) and arguably metal's finest skinsman, Nick Barker (Cradle Of Filth, Old Man's Child), both of whom joined the band on Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia, Dimmu Borgir continue on the path with their all-star line-up towards domination! Nuclear Blast. 2003.
Dimmu Borgir: Vortex (vocals, bass); Shagrath (vocals); Galder, Silenoz (guitar); Mustis (piano, synthesizer); Nick Barker (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Abbath (vocals); Charlie Storm (synthesizer, programming). Producers: Dimmu Borgir, Frederik Nordstrom. Recorded at Fredman Studio, Gothenburg, ...
| | Strapping Young Lad Alien CD (2005)
Strapping Young Lad
$11.89 This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Strapping Young Lad: Devin Townsend (vocals, guitar); Jed Simon (guitar); Byron Stroud (bass instrument); Gene Hoglan (drums). Never mind System of a Down's irresistibly quirky Serj Tankian. If any heavy metal musician were picked to represent the musically adept but incurably goofy spirit of Frank Zappa, it would probably be gifted lunatic Devin Townsend, whose prolific and eclectic output -- not to mention blackened sense of humor -- over the course of a steadily lengthening career continues to amaze and confuse in equal quantities. Through those years, Strapping Young Lad, while ostensibly a "group," has served as the most common laboratory for Townsend's wacky solo experiments, but word is, studio album number four, 2005's fittingly named Alien, is their first true band effort. This is somewhat rather hard to ascertain, but there's no disputing ...
| | U F O UFO 1 CD (1971) (Import) Germany
Strapping Young Lad
$13.15 Remastered Version Of Their 1971 Debut Album.
Personnel: Phil Mogg (vocals); Mick Bolton (guitar); Pete Way (bass guitar); Andy Parker (drums). Recorded on a shoestring budget, UFO has several challenging sonic moments. The uneven mixes and amateur performances that some listeners might find quaint or innocent could be distracting to others. In their pre-Michael Schenker days, the British band made a much more experimental noise that reflected psychedelic as well as R&B influences pitched with a dark resonance. This swirling mish-mosh barely suggests the early British metal of the group's commercial pinnacle that was still years off when they released their ...

| | Dillinger Cocaine In My Brain CD (2004) (Import) Anthology; United Kingdom
Strapping Young Lad
$28.89 Dillinger was one of the first crop of Jamaican deejays of the 70s. 'Cocaine (In My Brain)' contains the most comprehensive selection of Dillinger's Upsetter material ever released. Includes combinations with Dillinger's mentor Dennis Alcapone, sparring partner Trinity, & superstar singer Gregory Isaacs. Two CDs featuring 40 tracks total. Trojan. 2004.
Personnel includes: Lester "Dillinger" Bullocks (vocals). This Lee Perry-produced two-CD best-of includes the Jamaican DJ Dillinger performing the inimitable title track, perhaps his biggest hit, and features guests like Gregory Isaacs, Dennis Alcapone, and Trinity. Dillinger was one of the best second-generation Jamaican DJs, whose biggest era came in the 1970s, although he's continued to release music. This economical double-CD set captures his biggest hit, "Cocaine in My Brain," which brought him international fame, and its follow-up, "Marijuana in My Brain." However, as a greatest-hits collection, there's plenty missing, such as "Natty King Fu" and "CB200," the track that first really brought him to fame. In other words, it's far from complete. That said, however, it does have a number of tracks that Dillinger cut at Black Ark with Lee "Scratch" Perry early ...
