Personnel: George Barnes, Duncan James (electric guitar); Dean Reilly (bass); Benny Barth (drums). Recorded live at the Willows Theater, Concord, California on July 27, 1977. Includes liner notes by Alexandra Barnes Leh. Digitally remastered using HDCD technology. This is part of Acoustic Disc "Archive" series. Personnel: Duncan James, George Barnes (guitar); Benny Barth (drums). Liner Note Author: Larry Cummings. Recording information: Willows Theater, Concord, CA (07/1977). Authors: Dean Reilly; Benny Barth. Photographer: Jon Sievert. George Barnes has been unjustly overlooked by fans of jazz guitar, since he spent a good portion of his career as a studio musician, but the initial appearance in 2003 of this previously unreleased 1977 concert (recorded just a few months prior to his death) adds an important final chapter to his recorded legacy. Barnes leads his brand new quartet (with fellow guitarist Duncan James, bassist Dean Reilly, and drummer Benny Barth) through a delightful program of standards ("Sweet Georgia Brown," "Moonglow," and "Why Was I Born?"), gems from the vast Duke Ellington band book ("Don't Get Around Much Anymore" and "Perdido"), as well as the popular "Theme From the Flintstones." Barnes' fluid playing and that of his group make them sound as if they had been together far longer. The excellent sound by engineer Larry Cummings is identical to the mix heard by the audience that very evening. The warm, detailed liner notes by Barnes' daughter, Alexandra Barnes Leh, add a nice touch to this highly recommended release. ~ Ken Dryden Don't Get Around Much Anymore Music George Barnes Don't Get Around Much Anymore Songs Don't Get Around Much Anymore Music Review Purchase Don't Get Around Much Anymore CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Ted Brown Free Spirit CD (1989) (Import) Netherlands

| | Marvin Stamm Live At Birdland CD (2005)
Don't Get Around Much Anymore
$13.15 Why a "live" CD? Why at Birdland? There are times when everything just seems right for doing something like this. The quartet had several bookings in the New York area within the space of eight days - a concert in Connecticut, the COTA Festival in Delaware Water Gap, PA, and four nights in Birdland in New York City. Ed Soph and I had been talking about recording another CD, and this seemed to be the perfect time. We've spoken often ...
