The late songwriter David Ackles used his third album to further separate himself from the California tunesmith Cosa Nostra. Ackles was always a horse of a different color anyway. While comparisons to Randy Newman are natural and, in places even valid, they fall short of the mark. Ackles' music is much darker, already deeply entrenched in the American Gothic his fourth album would be named after. While the post-Tin Pan Alley stylings of Newman are evident here, Ackles' inspiration is in the original texts and not his Cali counterparts. Other sides of Ackles come from John Stewart and the folk revival, and no less than Scott Walker's early work and Jacques Brel. Subway to the Country portends itself a rootsier record, but it is rooted only in the tradition of American song itself. From the bleak vaudevillian cabaret of "Main Street Saloon" to the shimmering string arrangements and chamber textures in "That's No Reason to Cry" to the surreal muted winds and brass in "Woman River," Ackles is like a Western Kurt Weill. His knowledge of song form and nuance is encyclopedic, and his command over his singing voice is total. He can rumble smooth, swinging blues in the lower register as he does on the latter track, or shift it into loopy swirls and theatrical splashes as he does on "Inmates of the Institution." The most beautiful track on the album, however, is the title track that closes the album. Full of muted tones and colors, the backing orchestra holds itself close to Fred Myrow's arrangement as Ackles promises a lover that if he "Ever gets three bucks together/I'm gonna buy three tickets on a train/And I'll show you the rain." Ackles could milk the drama from a song without effort because he created the drama. Here he seeks in vain for a lighter heart and an older house to hand his song pictures in, but to no avail. Once one is an innovator of such dimension, one always has a restless creative soul, seeking to go ever-deeper levels in the well. Subway to the Country is not the classic that American Gothic is, but it remains a fine testament to Ackles' truly awesome poetic power as both a writer and a singer. ~ Thom Jurek
For his 1969 sophomore effort, Ackles and producers Russ Miller ditched the rock band, brought in top session musicians and classically trained arranger Fred Myrow (a sometime collaborator with Jim Morrison), and made a record closer to Brecht and Weill than the Beatles. Collectors' Choice. 2002.

Subway To The Country CD music
$10.65 With producer Tom Dowd, known for his work at Atlantic Records, at the helm, the Souther-Hillman-Furay Band seemed to be distancing itself a bit from its country-rock roots with its second release, the appropriately titled Trouble in Paradise. Here the band expands on the funkier aspects of its debut album, while at the same time slipping even closer to the middle of the road. On that record it ...

Subway To The Country songs
$10.15 "Quirky, adventurous and stubbornly intelligent..."- Jason Warburg, THE DAILY VAULT"This is really a great album consisting of avant garde rock with intriguing song writing."- J-Sin, SMOTHER.NETLiz Phair's pal David Clement suffered though more than his share of major-label nightmares while bringing this sophomore disc to the public. Which is a shame, because YOUR FREE GIFT's skewed melodies, spot-on instrumentation, and propulsive pop-rock (a la David Byrne fronting the Attractions) makes for an effervescent, surprisingly substantial listen - like a candy bar that's somehow good for you. Hopefully the "kids" can get their hands on this baby somehow - Nick, SLATCH.COM"The breathy vocals are a sharp contrast to the hard-driving music. And the tug-o-war between the two elements create a tension that's hard to ignore. The production is so over-original that it technically breaks new sonic ground. It's rare to find such a revelation in original music. Not only are the lyrics deep, but the music, the production, and the vocals all blend in some multi-layered smorgasbord to create a type of complex maze...decipherable only if one allows the subconscious to take control. Hard to believe that humans could operate at such an atmospheric realm."- Independent Songwriter MagazineThe music is diverse and shows David as quite an adaptable singer/songwriter and a good judge of musicians. The music on YOUR FREE GIFT is ready for mainstream and has enough twists to keep it different. This intelligent songwriter may have his day in the spotlight yet.
