Black & White; Standard Screen; Soundtrack English The first version of JANE EYRE to use sound, this 1934 film stars Virginia Bruce as Jane, a fiercely independent orphan who as an adult makes her living as a governess. After she quits her job at the austere orphanage where she was raised, she moves to Thornfield Hall, the intimidating manor belonging to a brooding, reclusive man named Edward Rochester (Colin Clive), where she undertakes the care of his ward, Adele. Jane finds herself falling deeply in love with Rochester, but she is frightened by mysterious happenings in a locked wing of the mansion. The dark mystery at the heart of Thornfield cannot be suppressed forever: one day a disturbed woman who claims to be Rochester's wife suddenly appears in the mansion. When Jane confronts Rochester he admits he's been keeping his mad wife locked in a remote wing. Jane flees the mansion and attempts to forget Rochester, even finding a new beau. But on the eve of her wedding, some cataclysmic events unfold as the classic tale nears its end.

Jane Eyre Movie Review Average Rating: (2.5 out of 5 stars) Like It Love this movie...its a really old movie, so it should be obvious that the picture quality isnt all that great....the sound was crappy, but thats probably bCuz i watched it via PS2....if you want it to be exactly like the book, you wont be happy with this movie because they changed alot of the story....but if you just dont care, its worth the buy. Cheap, mediocre travesty of the classic story. Made by the poverty row studio Monogram, this represents a rare attempt at at a "prestige" movie by that studio. It is a disaster, terrible sets, looking like a badly photogaphed stage play, poorly acted, flatly directed by a hack, they were clearly out of their depth tackling this sort of material, and you wonder why they bothered. It has nothing to recommend it.Colin Clive,so unforgettable as Dr.Frankenstein could have been a great "Rochester",but here he seems to know he's onto a loser and doesn't bother to rise above the mediocrity surrounding him.The print is in a poor condition. For Bronte/Colin Clive completists only.See the 1944 version for the finest Hollywood treatment of the novel.
