In this silent classic, Douglas Fairbanks is superb as a mischievous thief who, with the help of a genie's magic, tries to outwit the evil ruler of Bagdad. A wondrous, fantastic adventure, THE THIEF OF BAGDAD showcases the talents of Fairbanks--the first and greatest of film swashbucklers. With the help of a magic rope and a magic carpet, the hero woos a beautiful princess and faces many mortal dangers, including fierce dragons, blazing fires, and swelling waters, in his quest to prove himself worthy of her love.

THE THIEF OF BAGDAD was added to the Library of Congress National Film Registry in 1996. Elton Thomas is a pseudonym for actor Douglas Fairbanks.

5 stars Fairbanks is Amazing!
Douglas Fairbanks is very fit and full of swagger as he struts his way through this wonderful fantasy. He is a thief who falls in love with a princess. The only way he can win her hand is to enter a contest. The one who brings the rarest gift wins her over. His competition are some royal suitors from all parts of Arabia and the East. I won't reveal any more of the plot. This is a fantastic movie! The special effects are mind-blowing! A Magic Rope. A Defile in the Mountains. A Valley of Fire. A Flying Carpet. The Valley of Monsters. A Winged Horse. An amazing underwater scene with Fairbanks slaying a giant creature and facing temptation from Mermaids. Did I mention The Cloak of Invisibilty? And more!! This movie truly is worth watching. Two and one half hours of bewilderment and excitemnet. One of the most expensive silent movies ever made with massive sets and a great supporting cast. I'm sure you will enjoy it. I am recommending the Kino Video version. I have also seen a much poorer quality and cheaper version and can't recommend it. The clarity and sound differences between the two are staggering!

Thief Of Bagdad film

Perhaps the most memorable film about the aftermath of World War II, THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES unfolds with the homecoming of three veterans to the same small town. The leads all touch emotional truths: Myrna Loy seems able to express longing, joy, fear and surprise--mostly with her back turned--in a particularly poignant welcome home. The movie never glosses over the reality of altered lives and the inability to communicate the experience of war on the front lines or the home front. A landmark achievement. WWII vet Harold Russell, who lost his hands in the ...

Georges Melies' innovations led to some of the earliest examples of fantasy filmmaking in the history of cinema. His creative time lapses, early experiments and use of the cinematic technique gave birth to ways of storytelling still commonly used today. This collection of shorts and experiments ranges from avant-garde to science fiction to documentary and greatly influenced the art of cinema both as a narrative form and a dreamy forum for magical imagery. Included in this collection are the following short films: "The Four Troublesome Heads" (1898), "Fat and Lean Wrestling Match" (1900),"The One-Man Band" (1900), "The Man with the Rubber Head" (1901), "Bluebeard" (1901), "A Trip to the Moon" (1902), "The Infernal Boiling Pot" (1903), "The Infernal Cakewalk" (1903), "The Music Lover (1903), The Living Playing Cards (1904), Hilarious Posters (1904), Imperceptible Transmutations" (1904), "Untameable Whiskers" (1904), "The Scheming Gambler's Paradise" (1905), and "The Devilish Tenant" (1909). Also included are several early experimental tests that Melies attempted and a documentary explaining the man and his vision, "The Magic of Melies" (1997) by Jacques Meny. Raymond Rohauer is often associated with his work preserving and promoting the films of Buster Keaton. But he was also one of the biggest supporters of experimental and avant-garde filmmaking during the latter half of the 20th Century, and this collection presents some of the highlights of his archive. The 24 titles by highly influential artists and filmmakers represent many of of the movements and innovations emerging at the time, which remain influential within the art world. Marcel Duchamp, whose readymade sculptures and theories of art and spectatorship were truly revolutionary, made ANEMIC CIMEMA in 1926, as an experiment in tricks of both the eye and word. Fernand Leger's BALLET MECANIQUE is a stunning dance of mechanical parts at work, an example of modernism's interest in the aesthetics of the machine, and Viking Eggeling's objective SYMPHONIE DIAGONAL displays many of those concerns as well. MANHATTA, by photographer Paul Strand and painter/ photographer Charles Sheerer, is sometimes described as the first American avant-garde film, and takes as its subject a day in the life of New York City. The multiple films by American Dadaist and Surrealist Man Ray include EMAK-BAKIA, L'ETOILE DE MER, LE RETOUR A LA RAISON, AND LES MYSTERES DU CHATEAU DU DE. Each is an example of the remarkable scope and innovation of this Brooklynite who spent many of his working years in Paris. Hans Richter, Germaine Dulac, Jean Epstein, and Sergei Eisenstein all have work in the collection as well, making this an outstanding record of the fulminating creativity and cross-pollination in art and film in the 1920s and '30s. Special features include film notes by ...

Loosely based on the novel from Isaac Asimov, I, ROBOT is an action-packed, CGI-laden thrill ride from director Alex Proyas (THE CROW). Set in 2035, Will Smith stars as Chicago law enforcer Detective Del Spooner. Called upon to investigate the mysterious suicide of scientist Dr. Alfred Lanning (James Cromwell), Spooner deduces that Lanning didn't kill himself but was, in fact, murdered. Lanning worked for the US Robotics headquarters, where he constructed friendly robots designed to help humans with mundane tasks. Lanning's creations are prevalent all over the city, and have been fully integrated into the culture. They are allegedly programmed not to harm humans, but as Spooner digs deeper, his investigations lead him to a new type of robot that Lanning was working on before his death, and one of these models--the highly charismatic Sonny--becomes the prime suspect in the case. Spooner bears a grudge against robots due to an unfortunate incident, so his case against Sonny is met with shrugs of indifference from colleagues who know his prejudices all too well. Fortunately he meets an ally, and a romantic interest, in Dr. Susan Calvin (Bridget Moynahan), who agrees to help him. As Sonny is cured of his violent tendencies, the other robots amass across the city, working on the assumption that they need to control humanity in order to safeguard its future. Director Proyas unleashes a fearsome arsenal of special effects, while Spooner and Calvin chase the errant robots all over the city. Sonny's facial features and voice are digitally manipulated from the actor Alan Tudyk, lending an unnerving element of humanity to the character. Smith and Moynahan give convincing performances throughout, and as the action ...
