| | Vertical Horizon Go CD - Import Vertical Horizon Discography of CDs
Coming out of that 1990s niche of straightforward rock and roll bands like Matchbox Twenty and Train, Vertical Horizon continues mining the same vein of big hooks and riffs on their 2003 outing, GO. For their first album in four years, the lads worked with Melissa Etheridge/Corrs producer John Shanks, who strikes a balance between tastefully orchestrated numbers like the soaring "Forever" and more guitar-driven "Sunshine" and harder-rocking fare like the post-grunge "One of You" and "Echo," with its sprinkling of catchy power chords throughout.
Pop also shows up big on Vertical Horizon's radar, and this quartet does fine dabbling in these quarters by way of the chugging opener "When You Cry" and the more harmony-laden "I'm Still Here." Despite the paucity of power ballads, sensitive sorts will still find plenty to tuck into from the ruminative "Underwater" to the acoustic-guitar-kissed "Won't Go Away." GO finds the lads in Vertical Horizon not missing a step despite the lengthy break between album releases.

$7.96 Within a couple years, Canadian teenager Justin Bieber went from covering Usher on YouTube to working with Usher. An internet sensation from his renditions of several pop and pop-oriented R&B hits, he was still only 15 years old when he released this, his first album -- though it's more like an EP since it is contains only seven songs that are 25 minutes in duration. Given ...
| | Rick Derringer Sky Is Falling CD (2009)
Go
$8.80 Released on Fuel 2000, The Sky Is Falling is actually a reissue of the Doin' Business As... Derringer, Bogert & Appice album that was first released in Europe in 2001. In this short-lived power trio, guitarist and producer Rick Derringer reportedly "replaced" Jeff Beck in the "follow-up" to 1973's Beck, Bogert & Appice album (their rhythm section is, of course, made up of ex-Vanilla Fudge members bassist Tim Bogert and rock & roll über-drummer Carmine Appice. Nah. While this doesn't reach those lofty heights. Strictly out of its time and element -- from the songs to the production -- as a hard rock album with well-written compositions, excellent vocals, and musicianship, it works very well. Hearing the set in 2001 was just plain weird given what else was going on in popular music at the time. Hearing it ...
| | Bonnie Raitt Longing In Their Hearts CD (1994)
Go
$11.89 LONGING IN THEIR HEARTS won the 1995 Grammy Award for Best Pop Album. It was also nominated for Album Of The Year and Best Engineered Album. The title song was nominated for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, and "Love Sneakin' Up On You" was nominated for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.
Bonnie Raitt's second act on the American stage did not come easy, paid for in gray hairs and broken hearts. But her knowing tales of grown up love and the difficulties in making it last pushed her to multi-platinum heights with NICK OF TIME and LUCK OF THE DRAW. But with the trappings of superstardom comes the pressure of making your next statement stand up to expectations. Which might make a world of difference to almost any popular artist, save for Bonnie Raitt.
Because our heroine has been drawing from the same heartland well for many years--longer than some of her more casual fans have been alive, in fact-- the casual brilliance of LONGING IN THEIR HEARTS lies in its poised tone of acceptance, in the spiritual renewal of the tried and true. LONGING IN THEIR HEARTS is Bonnie Raitt's fond farewell to her youth, but as the troubador once put it, she's younger than that now. "Can't go back to make things right/wish I'd understood/Time has made things clearer now/we did the best we could," Raitt sighs like an old time country balladeer on "Circle Dance."
LONGING IN THEIR HEARTS is about trying to age gracefully, about remembering how to live and love with the innocence of youth ("Love Sneakin' Up On You"), and learning how to sustain through trust and commitment and shared values (the title tune), even as the allure of a gypsy's life beckons. The range of musical styles Raitt chooses to express her simple truths and deep longing are as real and abiding as the bluesy earth mother growl of her voice (the closing confessional "Shadow Of Doubt" with Charlie Musselwhite), and the shivery heartstring whine of her bottleneck guitar. From yearning vocal harmonies, to taut instrumental breaks, blues, R&B, country and soul remain the bedrock of Raitt's art, her new found fame notwithstanding--these performances

| | Diamond Fist Werny Long View To The Sky CD (2000)
Go
$11.49 "Snowfallingthrusmoke" opens up the propulsive side of this combo; there's barely one echoed overdubbed incantation out of Todd Werny's mouth when another takes its place, perfect for the first part, the easy part, of an eight-hundred mile road trip on a flat boring road starting at midnight. It's appropriate in a twisted way: Werny's lyric, deceptively simplistic, runs in part "We don't live here...We don't hunt ...
| | Sammy Davis, Jr It's All Over But The Swingin/I Gotta CD (1957)
Go
$12.79 Rock and roll singer Sammy Davis Jnr performs his catchy classics on this 23-song double album, which includes "I Cover The Waterfront" and "Don't Blame Me."
Throughout his life, Sammy Davis, Jr. was often derided as a Frank Sinatra clone, and while this just isn't true, It's All Over but the Swingin' was his biggest attempt at aping his friend and mentor's Capitol Records sound. What critics of Davis forget is that Sinatra's Capitol recordings defined 1950s vocal jazz so much that everyone from Ella Fitzgerald to Sarah Vaughan to Billie Holiday were appropriating everything from the chairmen's arrangers and song selection to cover concepts. An upbeat downer disc, It's All Over but the Swingin' actually finds a middle ground between Sinatra's suicidal torch song and medium-tempo swing albums, with Morty Stevens' arrangements gamely appropriating both Nelson Riddle's orchestral and big band styles, while the top-rate band is composed of such Sinatra/Riddle regulars as Harry Edison, Joe Comfort, and Milt Bernhart. This may give the album demerits in the originality department, but it does make for a great-sounding session that features hot solos throughout, and Sammy Davis, Jr. does a wonderful job of combining a real jazz feel with his more stereotypical, outsize-Broadway singing style. Davis can't beat Sinatra on "I Guess I'll Hang My Tears out to Dry" or "It Never Entered My Mind," but his swinging reading of "But Not for Me" may just be the definitive up-tempo version of the standard, and his scat intro and complex tempo changes throughout "I Can't Get Started" show that Davis was equally at home at Birdland as he was on Broadway. Incidentally, the album was released with two different ...
| | Counting Crows Hard Candy CD (2002) Enhanced CD
Go
$8.49 Partially recorded at Ocean Way Recording, Hollywood, California and at Westside Studios, London, England.
Intent on recapturing the mainstream glory of their debut AUGUST AND EVERYTHING AFTER, Counting Crows find themselves expanding ranks (adding touring guitarist David Immergluck) and tightening up musical execution on 2002's HARD CANDY. Make no mistake, frontman Adam Duritz continues plumbing the dark reaches of his sensitive and somewhat damaged psyche for lyrical inspiration, but the band's spirited playing makes for an excellent counterpoint. The results include a Byrds-flavored title cut (aided by Matthew Sweet's harmonies) and the semi-New Wave workout "New Frontier" peppered by Charlie Gillingham's delightfully cheesy synthesizer runs.
Duritz's troubled romantic lyrics find him insecurely sabotaging an otherwise flourishing relationship on the soaring "Miami," unable to fathom whether love is nourishing or depriving on the bittersweet "Goodnight L.A.," and feeding off depression and suicide on the piano-driven "Black And Blue." Counting Crows' ...
