In between manning drums for the Queens Of The Stone Age album SONGS FOR THE DEAF and the 2003 all-star death metal side-project Probot, Dave Grohl turned out ONE BY ONE, the Foo Fighters' fourth studio outing. With the Foo's line-up remaining intact for the second consecutive album, Grohl's posse set about sanding down the lighter, pop-inflected nuances of the album's predecessor THERE IS NOTHING LEFT TO LOSE. From the opening cut/lead single "All My Life," the Foo Fighters serve notice that amps are cranked and guitars are far beyond being set on stun. This intense outpouring of energy manifests itself well on the simmering tension of "Low," buzzing melodicism of "Times Like These (One-Way Motorway)," and the drill-press relentlessness of "Have It All."
Taking a page from the book of his former group Nirvana, Grohl has fun playing around with dynamics particularly on the bipolar subtle/screaming "Disenchanted Lullaby" and "Lonely As You," a chugging number that seamlessly goes from a lightly strummed intro to churning riffs. The biggest highlights include "Tired," a strummed ballad featuring multi-layered choruses by Queen guitarist Brian May, and closer "Come Back," a prog-flavored seven-minute-plus epic that meanders between soaring passages and segments soaked in angst-laced brio.
Japanese edition of their 2002 album will include one bonus track, 'Danny Says'. 12 tracks. BMG.

There was no reason why Cock Robin shouldn't have been as big as anyone else around at the time. This collection showed a band that was bright, bubbly, and buoyant. "Thought You Were on My Side" oozed all the charm of a band in the studio for the first time. But it was the moody -- and, to a degree, menacing -- "When Your Heart Is Weak" that delivered their only hit Stateside. Certainly, things were not what they seemed. Under the chic shine of Steve Hillage's production lay a group led by intellectual Peter Kingsbery (just read the sleeve notes: "This, our first album, is for those who've helped birth this backwards child"). However, they used enough humor in their poetic license to do well in Europe.

It doesn't require a great stretch of the imagination to suggest that singer/guitarist Trey Anastasio's solo debut bears some of the elements of his (don't call them a) jam band par excellence Phish. It's perhaps more useful, however, to note the differences between this album and the work of Anastasio's aquatic buddies. While "Alive Again" employs the kind of syncopated, white-guy funk feel that makes Phish-heads bob at a thousand paces, there's more concision to the song's construction than you'll find in some Phish numbers. Similarly, while "Night Speaks to a Woman" bears some of Anastasio's trademark guitar heroism, the reference point seems at times to be closer to mid-period Eric Clapton than to Jerry Garcia. And on the amiable "Drifting," Trey shows that he's got some pure pop instincts, the kind that would have guaranteed him a spot on AM radio in that medium's mid-'70s golden age. Ultimately, Phish phans won't be put off, but they may pick up a trick or two along the way.
