THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS is an Enhanced CD containing film clips, theatrical trailers plus expanded liner notes and photos. Original score composed by John Barry. Producers: John Barry, Paul O'Duffy, Jason Corsaro, a-ha. Recorded at CTS Studios, London, England. Includes liner notes by Geoff Leonard and Pete Walker. All tracks have been digitally remastered. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Timothy Dalton's debut as Agent 007 received mix reviews, but John Barry's original score is well above the average for a mid-'80s action film. In 1987, many of Barry's peers were following the lead of synthesizer champions like Giorgio Moroder and Vangelis. As a result, a high percentage of the movie soundtracks from the '80s sounded more out of date a decade later than the film music of the '70s. But Barry is sparing in his use of keyboards and drum machines, generally using them only to enhance the impact of action sequences. Most of the incidental music in The Living Daylights was performed in rich, resonant acoustic string orchestrations. The soft, flute-based "Kara Meets Bond" and the soaring brass-and-string piece "Mujahadin and Opium" even seem to anticipate Barry's Oscar-winning score for Dances With Wolves (1990). If it weren't for the three original pop songs by A-Ha and the Pretenders, one might take this for a mid-'90s soundtrack. But the production on those tracks is unmistakably '80s. A-Ha's contribution is a strong sample of Seven and the Ragged Tiger-influenced Europop, enhanced by Morton Harket's powerhouse falsetto vocals. "Where Has Every Body Gone" and "If There Was a Man," both performed by the Pretenders, are more run of the mill than anything else on the soundtrack. ~ Evan Cater

Barry & Bond, what a combination! John Barry's music is the spirit and soul of James Bond movies. He defined the character of Bond set against the backdrop of intricate interplays between horns and strings, to which he is the master. The background music to the screens action doesn't get much better. Here with 'The Living Daylights, he scores another hit with the title track performed by a-ha, and including two additional songs by The Pretenders. The music for Necros the assassin, grabs you right from the beginning, as does the 'Inflight Fight.' The two pieces, ' Into Vienna,' and the song, ' If There Was A Man,' sung by Chrissie Hynde, are absolutely beautiful. This melody is underated as is a lot of Barry's love themes from the movies, ' Tiffany Case,' from Diamonds Are Forever, as well as, ' We Have All The Time In The World,' from On Her Majesty's Secret Service, to name a few. I think it's great that all the Bond scores are being remastered and re-released with additional tracks. Having purchased Bond soundtracks since back in the days of vinyl, I always felt cheated because a lot of the great music from the films would be missing. Thank you CD Universe for making these soundtracks available and at such a great price. Submitted by Johnny D. (Prospect, Ct. USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

One of the best Bond soundtracks out there! This is one of John Barry's best James Bond soundtracks, if not the best. It has a dated sound but the music is very fresh and uniquely innovative for a Bond film. If you are out purchasing the James Bond soundtracks, this is a must have andgreat starter.
