(3 Customer Reviews)
Released just in time for Valentine's Day 2003, the Capitol compilation Love Songs is a generous collection of romantic ballads sung by Nat King Cole. The compilers have leaned heavily on the Gordon Jenkins-arranged and -conducted albums Love Is the Thing (1957) ("When I Fall in Love," "Stay as Sweet as You Are," "It's All in the Game," "Stardust") and The Very Thought of You (1958) ("The Very Thought of You," "The More I See You," "For All We Know"), though there are tracks dating back to the early '50s and up to Cole's final sessions in 1964. Jenkins' lush string charts dominate, however, and they add force to Cole's rich, becalmed interpretations. His trick is to understate the sophisticated love lyrics, leaving the drama to the arrangements. This material has been presented in countless configurations by Capitol over the decades, and in a sense this is just another one. But the collection holds together well, and with a running time of 74 minutes it allows enough time for plenty of smooching on love's favorite holiday. ~ William Ruhlmann

Love Songs album
$10.69 This was the 1987 Grammy winner for best engineered non-classical recording.
More meticulously crafted than its predecessor ARC OF A DIVER, and more musically adventurous than its follow-up ROLL WITH IT, BACK IN THE HIGH LIFE represents the pinnacle of Steve Winwood's '80s pop output. High production values, interlocking percussion lines, R&B backing vocals, horns, synthesizers and ideas borrowed from various world musics enhance and update Winwood's proclivity for blues, R&B, and rock. His distinctive, blue-eyed soul vocals are, naturally, at the front of the mix as well.
The runaway Number One single, "Higher Love," with its syncopated groove, pan-African percussion, and slick Top-40 production, kicks off this accessible set. Elsewhere, the dance-gospel of "Wake Me Up on Judgment Day," the semi-acoustic ...
| | Paul Butterfield Blues Band CD (1965)
Love Songs CD music
$6.19 The '60s Blues Revival begins here. Calling this album influential is an understatement akin to calling the Grand Canyon a rut; suffice to say that an entire generation of musicians (mostly young and white) heard this and had their lives changed forever. In fact, for at least a year after ...
| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Love Songs music CDs
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's ...
| | Drive-By Truckers Southern Rock Opera CDs (2001) Digipak
Love Songs songs
$11.99 A sprawling two-disc set, the Drive-By Truckers' SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA is a cracked masterpiece that's enjoyable on several different levels. Hipsters might enjoy the giggly premise of a two-disc set devoted to a slightly altered retelling of the rise and fall of 1970s Southern rock icons Lynyrd Skynyrd. Progressive rock fans lamenting the modern era's relative lack of story-driven albums divided ...
| | Dredg Catch Without Arms CD (2005)

$8.49 Early on, critics often described Dredg as a metal group. However, the quartet has since matured into a hard-edged indie-rock ensemble that seeks diversity and refinement in its music. On CATCH WITHOUT ARMS, the ...

| | Fireworks Go Up You're Welcome CD (2004)
Love Songs music CDs
$13.49 The first comparison the average listener will think of upon hearing the debut album by Fireworks Go Up! is early Weezer. This will probably be the second and third comparison as well (along with a little bit of both the Promise Ring and Sleepyhead), but unlike a lot of similar bands, singer/songwriter Dan Coutant and crew aren't content to merely ape Pinkerton for just over half an hour. Coutant ...
| | Court & Spark Dead Diamond River CD (2004) Extended Play
Love Songs songs
$6.29 Coming nearly three years after their last album, the Dead Diamond River EP finds the Court & Spark deepening and expanding their sound. While the band never was exactly a hard-charging country-rock band, here they have stripped away any rough edges and bathed their sound in what sounds like a Olympic-sized pool of reverb and atmosphere. Even a simple acoustic guitar-pickin' ballad like "First Light at Avalon" has a smoothed-out feel that is unlike anything they have done previously. The question is does the ...
