Cognizant of the fact that adult contemporary folk-rock wasn't getting a fair shake on the major-label level, Sister Hazel opted out of its deal in order to self-release CHASING DAYLIGHT, the band's first studio effort since 2000's FORTRESS. Clinging to a straightforward rock sound that draws from the same well of inspiration as Hootie & The Blowfish and Counting Crows, this Floridian quintet has continued writing songs steeped in the intricacies of love and relationships. Frontman Ken Block has a particular knack for ruminating over heartbreak, loss, and devotion via the self-penned soaring desperation of "Your Mistake" and anthemic "Sword and Shield."
These Gainesville rockers also hooked up with a number of famous songwriting collaborators including '80s pop star Richard Marx (the chugging "Life Got In The Way") and former Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers drummer Stan Lynch (an ethereal "Hopeless"). Other highlights include the soulful "Killing Me Too," jaunty "Swan Dive," and gorgeous, harmony-soaked "Can't Believe." Although there's nothing quite ground-breaking about CHASING DAYLIGHT, these dozen cuts are still a solid rock & roll effort that will undoubtedly appeal to those tired of pre-fabricated pop and puerile posturing.
The band opted to move more from the major label mainstream back to their grass-roots fan base with this indie release. Chasing Daylight shows Sister Hazel's growth with everything from rock mantras to moving ballads. Sixthman label. 2002.

Chasing Daylight.... The entire CD is just great. I have recommended CD Universe to many of my friends. I recommend both the album and using the company to purchase it.

Where have I been ? Superb album, excellent songs, performance, packaging, production. I live in the UK where our media only promotes shallow crap, yet the industry wonders why their sales are so low. Bands like Sister Hazel are what we are crying out for and it appears I'm only of a few who bother to go looking for music that might appeal to me, rather than accepting the garbage shoved in our faces 24/7. My favourite on this album has to be the 2nd single, "Life Got In The Way" an absolute stormer of diddly thing with some of the best lyrics I've ever heard. All this from a band that's at l;east as ugly as I am. get these chaps on UK TV NOW !!!!! Submitted by craigian.chapman (Burton Upon Trent. UK) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Great Work I must say I'm new to the Sister Hazel fan base, also known as a Hazelnut. It was after being introduced from a friend in Mississippi that I grew to love this band. I believe the songs contained on this album are honest and are well written. If you dont own this album buy it and if you already own it turn it up and sing! Great come back If you digged "Fortress" (2000) from this band, then you know wich are the virtues and the flaws of these band. Also, you'll know it's a must-follow band. In "Chasing Daylight" you'll find why when you hear songs such as the opener "Your Mistake", "Come Around" and the smashing "Life Got In The Way". You'll remember how likeable is the voice from Ken Block and how capable is Ryan Newell with the six string (maybe the best guitar player in the actual pop-rock scene? Also, buy buying this album, you'll be supporting a band that has opted to go independent and a bunch of guys that handle social projects.
A great buy, in my opinion. Submitted by Juan Pablo Serra (Madrid (Spain)) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
