Diva Destruction started out as a solo project by singer, songwriter and keyboardist Debra Fogarty, who combines her classical training and love of goth, industrial and darkwave electronica to create dance music that is simultaneously aggressive, cerebral and angry. The problem, based on the evidence of her second album, is that she doesn't seem capable of writing melodies. Joined by second vocalist and keyboardist Sharon Blackstone, guitarist Benn Ra and drummer AntheM, Fogarty hits almost all the right genre buttons -- minor keys, echoey textures, 19th-century literary references, wailing vocals -- and her band whips up an impressively dense and detailed darkwave groove. But most of the songs feature three- or four-note tunes that grow tiresome within a minute or two; combined with her unvarying lyrical obsession on an evil former lover ("You never thought to care," "You're so selfish," "you're so blind," "How did I let you tempt me once again," etc.), this melodic dryness leaves you tired and irritated by about a third of the way through the album. By far the best track on Exposing the Sickness is a dance remix of"Trees," produced by Julian Beeston (of Nitzer Ebb fame), and it's exciting more despite the source material than because of it. ~ Rick Anderson

| | Mr Scruff Mrs. Cruff CD (1997)
Exposing The Sickness CD music
$9.59 MRS. CRUFF is a compilation of 12" singles originally released on Rob's Records and Pleasure Records.
If music for the dancefloor is intended for dancing, Mr. Scruff has disappointed. On this debut full-length from one of the premier British trip-hop remixers, one can't help but feel as though they maybe drank too much before heading out to the club. But if the listener is seated at home with a few friends after a night out, and perhaps some of these said friends have a little energy left over and don't mind a throbbing bassline and semi-interesting production, this record would be one to play. Mr. Scruff (aka Andy Carthy) offers a record that is at best a welcome change from those down-tempo records that come wrapped in a thick layer of self-serious ...
| | William Truckaway Breakaway CD (1976)
Exposing The Sickness music CDs
$36.09 Singer-songwriter William Truckaway released BREAKAWAY in 1971. This reissue marks the album's first appearance on CD.
After leaving the Sopwith Camel singer/songwriter William Truckaway recorded one of the great lost singles of the early '70s, "Bluegreens." It is an insanely catchy ditty built around a chunky synthesizer and simple hippy-dippy sentiments with a multi-tracked Truckaway and the Stovall Sisters providing some truly blissed-out vocals. It was enough of a hit that Taco Bell used it for an ad campaign and it got Truckaway an album deal with Reprise. ...

$11.59 Following the same path he took in his 2005 album Etherville, on Brand New Towns Robert Gomez plays shimmery, melancholy indie pop songs that speak of love found and love lost, layering his vocals delicately over acoustic guitar and piano, strings and brass, melodica and organ. But despite all of this, Gomez's music is ...
