Although a restless and brilliant improviser like Charlie Parker's true home will always be the stage--as evidenced by the literally dozens of exciting live recordings still being recovered decades after his death in 1955--there are those who feel, with some justification, that his late-'40s sides for Savoy Records are the essence of bebop. Certainly Parker's backing groups at the time, starring such up-and-comers as trumpeter Miles Davis, vibraphonist Milt Jackson, and drummer Max Roach, were among the greatest in jazz history, but throughout THE BIRD RETURNS, the focus is always on Parker's endlessly questing alto sax. Not for nothing is the opening track called "Chasin' the Bird," because when Parker was in the midst of one of his fluid, breathtaking improvisations, all the band could do was catch up. The only fault with THE BIRD RETURNS is that its 30 minutes leave listeners longing for more.

| | Miles Davis Cellar Door Sessions 1970 CDs (2005) Remastered; Box Set; Special Edition
Bird Returns songs
$88.15 Contains previously unreleased material. Some of the recordings on the CELLAR DOOR SESSIONS were originally released in edited form on the 1971 double-LP LIVE EVIL.
There is an entire universe contained in this box. Sumptuously packaged and scrupulously annotated, CELLAR DOOR SESSIONS 1970 is a six-disc set that documents Miles Davis's extended residency at the Washington, D.C., club. Davis is backed by a group of genius musicians: keyboardist Keith Jarrett, drummer Jack DeJohnette, bassist Michael Henderson, saxophonist Gary Bartz, percussionist Airto Moreira and guitarist John McLaughlin (who appears only on the last two discs). Together they pioneered an ecstatic fusion of jazz, rock, funk, and abstract sound-painting that established the blueprint for the future of progressive music.
Each disc contains a different live set, and while songs are often ...
| | Thelonious Monk Quartet With John Coltrane - At Carnegie Hall CD (2005)
Bird Returns album
$13.75 On paper it seems as if such titanic and distinctive musical personalities as Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane might not mix very well, but this stellar set, recorded live at Carnegie Hall in 1957, plays almost like a blissful extended duet between the two (with support from a sensitive yet hard-swinging bassist and drummer). The opener, "Monk's Mood," for example, ...

| | Bossa Nova For Lovers CD (2003)
Bird Returns music CDs
$9.35 The bossa nova is tailor-made for romance with its languid rhythms, smooth and easy melodies, and intimate, sexy vocals. Bossa Nova for Lovers is 16 tracks of classic '60s bossa nova from Verve. The collection features a good mix of vocal tracks and instrumentals. On the vocal side there are five Astrud Gilberto songs including one from the record she did with organist Walter Wanderley. Two tracks from the landmark Getz/Gilberto album, "Vivo Sonhando" and "O Grande Amor," are also included, Joao Gilberto's lovely vocals much to the fore. On the instrumental side are five Antonio Carlos Jobim tracks taken from his two Verve records that feature the composer playing his guitar with very lush orchestra backing, two Stan Getz and Laurindo Almeida duets, and one duet between Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd. The music is lush and the mood is unswervingly romantic. The only problem with the disc is that instead of the famous version of "The Girl From Ipanema" with Astrud Gilberto on vocals, the disc has the Jobim instrumental version. Still it is a very nice collection and is recommended for bossa nova fans looking for a bit of romance. ~ Tim Sendra

| | Jesse Belvin Guess Who: The Rca Victor Recordings CDs (2004)
Bird Returns songs
$20.39 The late great Los Angeles R&B vocalist's RCA recordings complete on UK CD for the first time. Features two full albums and nearly a dozen non album A's and B's.
This two-CD anthology does Belvin fans and collectors a mighty favor by collecting all of his RCA recordings into one release. It includes everything from both of his albums for the label; almost a dozen songs from non-LP 45s; one track, "My Last Goodbye," that didn't come out until a posthumous 1966 LP; and both sides of a 1958 single by the Chargers on which Belvin sang. However, those who value Belvin primarily as an R&B singer and soul forerunner might be taken aback, and quite possibly disappointed, by the overtly adult pop nature of many of these ...
