Personnel: Flip Phillips (tenor saxophone); Scott Hamilton, Herb Ellis, Butch Miles, Carl Fontana, Dick Hyman, Milt Hinton, Bob Haggart, Ralph Sutton. Veteran tenor saxophonist Flip Phillips' 80th birthday was celebrated at a three-day jazz party held in March 1995 by the Arbors label. There were 33 musicians at the event, 18 of whom are featured among the previously unreleased music on this CD. Phillips was still in prime form and he often battles the much younger tenor Scott Hamilton to a draw. Phillips' vocals on the brief "When You Know You're Getting Old" and "If I Had a Penny" are throwaways, but the fine solos along the way from clarinetist Buddy DeFranco ("Hashimoto's Blues"), altoist Phil Woods, soprano saxophonist Bob Wilber, trumpeter Randy Sandke, trombonist Carl Fontana, and Hamilton are generally quite heated. However, the birthday boy is the main star, sounding particularly strong on "Tenor Madness," "Spanish Eyes," "The Claw," and his trademark "Perdido." ~ Scott Yanow

Celebrates His 80th Birthday At The March Of Jazz 1995
$13.95 A few years ago, when I first met and worked with Kenny Washington, Ivisualized integrating his remarkable talent, both as a solo voice and as anensemble voice (like another horn), into the fabric of my quintet. Sincethat initial meeting, I have worked toward realizing thatpotential, an effort that has culminated in this CD. From the beginning, Kenny and I have teased each other about not havingcommercial recordings as featured artists in this day and age where it seemsthat everyone who owns a guitar has made and released a CD. This is, Ithink, especially remarkable for Kenny considering his popularity andacclaim in the Bay Area and beyond. It is fitting then that my first releaseshould also showcase Kenny. Kenny's voice is utilized in two basic ways on the recording. First, Ihave written arrangements of standard tunes which feature Kenny's voice in amore or less traditional way. Secondly, on two of the original tunes, Kennyvocalizes the melody (head) in unison or harmony with the tenor andflugelhorn like another horn -- not out front, but blended in, to create aunique timbre. He then takes his turn with the other instrumentalists as ajazz soloist. With most of today's "scat singers", the best thatone can hope for is some rhythmic inventiveness. Kenny's sensibilities, however, go far beyond the rhythmic. He is a true melodic innovator with a deep understanding of the harmonic underpinnings of the material, which comes not only from his exceptional ability to hear, but also from years of study as a jazz saxophonist. This adds up to Kenny's ...

Celebrates His 80th Birthday At The March Of Jazz 1995
$11.65 Personnel: Paul Burch (vocals, guitar, electric guitar, Wurlitzer organ, vibraphone, drums, bongos, tom tom); Paul Burch (various instruments); Kelly Hogan, Ralph Stanley (vocals); Mark Knopfler (guitar, acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Joe McMahan (electric guitar); George Bradfute (baritone guitar); Steve Sparkman (banjo); Fats Kaplin (fiddle); Jen Gunderman (Wurlitzer organ); Tim O'Brien (vocals, bouzouki); Dennis Crouch (upright bass). Recording information: British Grove Studios, London, England; Pan American Sound; RCA Studio B; Wow & Flutter, Nashville, TN. This album represents something of a watershed for the Nashville neo-traditionalist singer-songwriter Paul Burch. Partly recorded in England at the studio of Mark Knopfler, a longtime fan, it signifies Burch's emergence from a time of profound self-doubt, from which he was rescued by the encouragement of, among others, the British patron saint of indie music, the late DJ John Peel (who gets his own song as a tribute). The set kicks off with the confident rocker "Montreal," continuing with the churning rockabilly of "I Will Wait for You," and a pair of darkly mysterious, Gothic country ballads in "Just Before the Bells" and "The Last Dream of Will Keane." ...
