Deuter's recordings have always unfolded from a place of stillness, taking their inspiration from nature. On SEA AND SILENCE, he goes one step further by incorporating the actual sound of ocean waves into his songs. The tide arrives and withdraws in steady rhythm, as flute, piano, and synthesizer make their wistful comments.
Silence, too, has its say. The compositions here are sparse and unhurried, making them ideal aural partners in healing and bodywork. In the midst of all the slow unwinding, the gentle walking pace of "Seven Sacred Pools" comes as a refreshing splash of playfulness. "Empty Shore" features a poignant piano melody, one of Deuter's most memorable. Count SEA AND SILENCE as another valuable addition to the healing music canon.

| | Indie Choice 2001 CD (2001)
Sea & Silence album
$6.59 Indie Choice 2001 from Mod Music Records is one of the best sampler collections listeners may have the opportunity to hear. The quality of the production, songwriting, and musicianship is excellent across the board. In the 1980s, Warner Bros. released a couple of compilations that were exciting because of the inclusion of rarities -- Jonathan Richman's appearance on Troublemakers made that double disc memorable, Revenge of the Killer B's had the Pretenders to spice things up, but this indie-label release has no such star power to attract attention to it. That it works so well is commendable. Along with the aforementioned major-label compilations was a release produced by A&R man Steven Leeds, a very interesting Declaration of Independents project featuring Pylon and Robin Lane. Declaration consisted of music that had proven itself via the indie route and found new life on Leeds' label. CMJ also releases collections of current music, but the feeling while spinning Indie Choice 2001 is that this is one of the best collections of music that should be on the radio. "Disappear" by Miss Fortune is a hit. "Out of Sight" by Emily Curtis is a hit. "Disposable" by the Churchills is a mega-hit. This stuff is great. "Disposable" has sparkling power pop guitars, commanding vocals, and hooks galore. This is the song that Fotomaker needed to break out big time. This is the song that Crowded House could have used to follow up "Don't Dream It's Over." The Live at CBGB's and Live at the Rat compilations were vital and important because they documented two scenes as they were bursting at the seams, and many of the players went on to fame or infamy, but this collection, co-sponsored by BMI, Guitar Center, Gibson, and other companies involved in music, is perfect. The only flaw is the packaging -- it looks like it could be a CMJ monthly sampler or generic contest disc, and musically it is much more. ...

| | Skyfactor Take This Chance CD (2006)
Sea & Silence songs
$12.69 born on a rooftop in the east village of new york city in the summer of 2004, skyfactor was formed when two unique musical paths, destined to cross, finally met. one path, jon rubin, had been playing guitar practically since birth, and started a band called sky blues in high school with his older brother and two friends. after countless battle of the bands and a taste of local success, they spent the next 7 years writing, recording and touring, playing frequent shows along the east coast as well as releasing 3 independent cds to critical acclaim. the other path, bob ziegler, sang for as long as he could remember, and formed his first band in san diego at age 15. after getting his chops on many a california stage, he continued on to front the popular brother rabbit at the university of michigan, and most recently november factory, who perform often in new york and new jersey. how these paths crossed is the stuff of legend; in late 1997, both jon and bob's bands shared a sold-out bill on what turned out to be (unbeknownst to them) each groups' final performance. friends suggested repeatedly that the two pair up for a new project, but it was not yet to be. nevertheless, they shared a mutual respect for each other's style and creative drive, and soon became friends. after an impromptu jam session a full 7 years later, an undeniable musical chemistry was set into motion and the timing seemed right to finally join forces. and so skyfactor was born. the band's versatile sound, described as acoustic pop/rock ...
