| | Mike West New South CD Mike West Discography of CDs
Folksinger Mike West lays down his mantra in the opening cut, "Dixie," on New South: "I don't suffer fools and I don't play Dixie." West mixes his left-of-center humor with fairly straightforward arrangements (if one doesn't count the tuba) for 18 original songs. "Dogs and Ticks" includes a number of circular stories, each starting simply and building toward amusing catastrophe. The dogs get ticks, which leads to lime disease; the narrator buys weed, which leads to getting busted. However, all turns out well when the narrator finds Jesus, which gets him saved -- and "being saved got me praying/Now I got to behave." West paints a sardonic portrait of the New South on the album's title cut, a land occupied by "fraternity boys and sorority girls" along with lots of folks from up north. Despite all the changes, everything seems pretty much the same: "In the New South like the Old South/Speak your mind but shut your mouth/When you're talking about the New South." West's skewed point of view works less well on pieces like "Clothes Dryer" and "Muleskinner," songs that go on too long and are a bit obvious. Fans who have grown fond of West's oddball approach to folk will nonetheless joyfully add New South to their CD collections. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford Jr.

Purchase New South CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Bob Dylan Christmas In The Heart CD (2009)
New South album
$10.09 After the initial shock fades, the existence of CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART seems perhaps inevitable. After all, the thing Bob Dylan loves most of all are songs that are handed down from generation to generation, songs that are part of the American fabric, songs so common they never seem to have been written. These are the songs Dylan chooses to sing on CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART, a cheerfully old-fashioned holiday album from its Norman Rockwell-esque cover to its joyous backing vocals. Apart from the breakneck "Must Be Santa," which barrelhouses like a barroom, Dylan doesn't really reinterpret these songs as much as simply play them with his crackerjack road band, dropping in a little flair -- restoring "we'll have to muddle through somehow" to "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," singing the ...
| | Trans-Siberian Orchestra Night Castle CDs (2009)
New South CD music
$11.35 NIGHT CASTLE appears just in time for the big 2009 holiday season but don't be fooled: this isn't a Christmas album, even if it's sonically indistinguishable from Trans-Siberian Orchestra's other seasonal releases, and the fact that it's been dubbed "Capra-esque" certainly brings it within the realm of the season. NIGHT CASTLE brims with all the drama, pomp, and circumstance of Trans-Siberian Orchestra's other records but channeling these traits through a newly created narrative does have the effect of hearing it in a somewhat new light, shifting the focus entirely to the band's attack, not melody. Still, there's not that much new here -- and the coda of seasonal covers, including the first sober version of "Nutrocker" ever cut, doesn't do much to break that spell. But for those already enchanted by the Orchestra, this will continue to enthrall.

| | Shakira She Wolf CD (2009)
New South songs
$11.18 Last time around, Shakira touched upon so many styles she couldn't be contained on one album, splitting Oral Fixation in two. This time, she focuses on one sound only: a pulsating electro-disco that crosses all boundaries and welcomes all nationalities. Such concentration behooves Shakira, freeing her to release her inner She Wolf, a wild wacko who's as coo coo as she is carnal. And for as sexy as Shakira is -- crucially, her music is sexy too -- what really gives She Wolf its bite is her inspired nuttiness, how she laments that Matt Damon's not meant for her, and wishes her ex-lover and his new girl a horrible vacation where the room smells and the toilet doesn't flush. "Darling, it is no joke, this is lycanthropy," she sings on the title track with no small trace of humor, and this blend of cheerful weirdness and sick beats -- often supplied by the Neptunes, delivering tough, sensual rhythms in a way they haven't in a long time, but also John Hill and Wyclef Jean -- is giddily addicting, a celebration of all the strange sensuality that comes out at night. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Belin All The Way In CDs (2009) With DVD
New South album
$13.75 At times, it was hard to figure out whether Berlin were an average synth pop band trying to carve out their own niche or just a mediocre rock band jumping on the new wave bandwagon. Sure, they had some good singles and radio hits, but as an album band, they left a lot to be desired. Terri Nunn was beautiful and sexy, but it seemed like Berlin wanted to be more than just a commercial band with a hot vocalist: they seemed to be striving for greatness but settled for "that'll do." Unfortunately, they never had a chance to really prove themselves, breaking up after their commercially disappointing Count Three & Pray album, released in 1986. Nunn has kept the Berlin name alive over the years, touring with a different group of musicians and playing all the hits while releasing the occasional studio or live album. With a recorded output that seems to dwindle in quality with every release, one might hope that All the Way In would deviate from the standard "live hits" collection and offer up something really special. Sadly, that's not entirely the case. All the Way In was recorded live at The House of Blues in Anaheim, CA. The HOB is located ...

| | Electric Six Fire CD (2003)
New South music CDs
$11.99 Led by the lusty growl of Dick Valentine, the Electric Six recreate a 1970s dancefloor for rejects of both heaven and hell to boogie down upon. On a scandalous and smart 2003 debut, the Detroit band stirs metal, Southern rock, glam, and more, into a delirious post-punk stew, with lyrics of glorious nonsense such as "fire in the disco/fire in the Taco Bell." And the absurd lines are delivered by Valentine with such Bon Scott bravado and passion that it's near-impossible to divine just how serious is Electric Six. They're a graver Darkness and a sillier Tenacious D, a magnificent enigma with a genuinely fun first record.
Detroit's Electric Six splice punk, new wave, disco, and arena rock into a total entertainment solution for the new breed of rock n' roller. 'This ...
| | Weirdos We Got The Neutron Bomb: Weird World Volume Two. CD (2003)
New South songs
$10.59 A mere 12 years after Weird World, Vol. 1, volume two (with We Got the Neutron Bomb given as the dominant title) appeared to mop up odds and ends that hadn't appeared on the first anthology of material by the early L.A. punk band the Weirdos. As you might expect from a band that recorded infrequently and sporadically, there's a ragtag feel to this compilation. Ten of the 16 tracks, indeed, were previously unreleased; also tacked on are the late-'70s singles "We Got the Neutron Bomb" and "Destroy All Music," "Skateboards to Hell" (the B-side of a 1979 Denney Brothers single), "Hey Big Oil" (from the Denney Brothers' 1981 LP), and two songs from the 1990 Weirdos LP Condor. Although the material spans a dozen years (with a big gap between 1982 and 1988), the sound actually doesn't change much. It's straightforward ominous snarling punk, not quite hardcore but getting there, not too big on melody but not one-chord thrash either. A bit of experimental industrial rock creeps into the Denney Brothers' instrumentals "Hey Big Oil" and "Skateboards to Hell," and some rockabilly revivalism into the 1980 live-in-the-studio covers of Link Wray's "Fat Back" and Hank Mizell's "Jungle Rock." It's the late-'70s material that fans will probably be most ...
