Patrice Rushen was an R&B-jazz vocalist/pianist/songwriter who in the 70's and 80's had numerous albums make the Billboard charts. The majority of her work originally came out on Elektra Records but has never been issued on CD anywhere in the world until now. Patrice was her first album recorded for Elektra and reached #98 in 1979. Wounded Bird Records. 2003.
After recording three jazz-oriented albums for Prestige, Patrice Rushen switched to Elektra and gave herself a major R&B/pop makeover with Patrice. Even the funkiest parts of Shout It Out, the last of Rushen's three Prestige/Fantasy albums, couldn't have prepared listeners for this LP, which finds her taking the commercial plunge and successfully making the transition from jazz instrumentalist to R&B/pop vocalist. As expected, jazz's hardcore audience cried foul: Like Roy Ayers, George Duke, George Benson, and other jazz instrumentalists who took up R&B singing, Rushen was called a sellout and vilified in the jazz media. Patrice was trashed by jazz critics. Instead of hating this album because it isn't jazz, however, they should have judged it by R&B/pop standards. When those standards are applied, it becomes obvious that Patrice is, in fact, a rewarding R&B/pop effort. Patrice demonstrated that she could be an expressive, charming singer, and her writing or co-writing is solid on cuts that range from the funky "Hang It Up" and the lovely ballad "Didn't You Know?" to the socio-political "Changes (In Your Life)." With Patrice, the Los Angeles native made it clear that she was as appealing as an R&B/pop singer as she had been as a jazz pianist/keyboardist. ~ Alex Henderson

Patrice Rushen's First Album is a Peach! I first purchased this album in the late 70's, and it still holds up as one of the best R&B albums to date. Patrice Rushen was a new talent, and this CD was her first recording. Her vocals are fresh, her songwriting is incredibly strong, and the arrangements solid. You'll find a few hidden songs here that you may have never heard: "Cha-Cha" and "Music of the Earth" are my favorites, but it's all good!

This is her 4th album, not her 1st...! It's her 4th album and the 2nd in Funk/Jazz.
She's the female Herbie Hancock.
The most delicate piano playing ever.
And the sexiest love songs.
Man, listening to Patrice play makes me proud to be a man!

Patrice album
$6.55 Though Gino Vannelli's third record didn't contain a big hit single like its predecessor, STORM AT SUNUP was a significant step forward artistically. Combining the Stevie Wonder-esque synth textures of POWERFUL PEOPLE with a complex jazz-rock fusion sound and vocal gymnastics occasionally reminiscent of Tim Buckley, the album finds Vannelli at his most musically ambitious. "Mama Coco" sounds like Weather Report jamming with Jamiroquai singer Jason Kay, while "Love is a Night" makes ELP-style keyboard rock sound like pure love-makin' music.

| | Patrice Rushen Straight From The Heart CD (1982)
Patrice CD music
$9.09 Long out-of-print, this sultry'n'sassy landmark recording by one of the pioneer do-it-all women in black popular music has been lovingly re-issued on CD. The package comes complete with copious liner notes, 12-inch dance mixes AND single versions of "Forget Me Nots," the Rushen/Brenda Russell duet "Breakout" and the instrumental smash "Number One."
Classy, jazz-informed disco with solid-rock bottom commingles with impossibly lush ballads as composer/arranger/multi-instrumentalist Rushen weaves it all together with her exquisite voice. Produced by Rushen with the aid of Charles Mims, Jr. and a bevy of studio aces, STRAIGHT FROM THE HEART gets a slight edge over the simultaneously re-issued BEST OF PATRICE RUSHEN for its organic continuity. A stone classic.

| | Patrice Rushen Pizzazz CD (1980)
Patrice music CDs
$10.65 When Patrice Rushen was being lambasted by jazz snobs for making the switch from jazz instrumentalist to R&B/pop singer, she was also winning over quite a few people. R&B fans didn't care if she was no longer playing long, improvised piano solos with Joe Henderson or Hubert Laws; they loved her singing, and couldn't have cared less what jazz snobs thought of her new direction. Rushen's profile in the R&B world continued to increase with Pizzazz, her second album for Elektra and fifth overall. The song that did the most to make this LP a success was "Haven't You Heard?," a gem of a single that soared to the top of R&B radio play lists and was among Rushen's biggest hits. Many listeners bought Pizzazz because of "Haven't You Heard?," and they quickly discovered that the rest of the album was also excellent. Drawing on such influences as Earth, Wind & Fire, Minnie Riperton, Stevie Wonder, and the Emotions, Rushen has no problem holding an R&B lover's attention with treasures that include the funky opener "Let the Music Take Me," the soulful ballad "Settle for My Love," and the perky "Keepin' Faith in Love." Pizzazz might have received tongue-lashings from jazz critics, but from an R&B/pop perspective, it's among Rushen's most rewarding and essential albums. ~ Alex Henderson

$9.69 Patrice Rushen was an R&B-jazz vocalist/pianist/songwriter who in the 70's and 80's had numerous albums make the Billboard charts. The majority of her work originally came out on Elektra Records but has never been issued on CD anywhere in the world until now. Now was her third highest charting album, reaching #40 in 1984. It features the hit single 'Feels So Real (Won't Let Go)'. Wounded Bird Records. 2003.
Listeners expecting a sequel to to her best-selling 1982 album Straight From the Heart were in for quite a shock. In the two years between the efforts, Rushen became a proponent of the technology-or-bust ethos of many jazz artists in the early to mid-'80s. Given that thinking, Now is both minimal and innovative -- with all of its sonic virtues probably not fully appreciated at the time of its release. The album's biggest dance tracks, "Feels So Real (Won't Let Go)" and "Get Off (You Fascinate Me)," are relentlessly polyrhythmic and fulfilling. Rushen, unlike countless other acts, knew how to give synthesizers a sense of panache without the sound seeming artificial. Despite its dancefloor skills, Now also takes time out for affairs of the heart. On "Gotta Find It," the buoyant rhythms belie the desperate lyrics and Rushen's meditative vocals. The astute "Heartache Heartbreak" will put a damper on any party as she sings, "Does love mean that I will not be lonely" (a chilling sentiment that's probably too prickly for even Bobby Womack). The infectious "Perfect Love" features both an effortless vocal from Rushen as well as an understated Fender Rhodes solo. During her stint at Elektra, Rushen never made bad albums, but they often had their fair amount of filler. On this effort there isn't any, and the closer you listen the tracks, the more likeable they become. Produced by Charles Mims Jr. and Rushen, Now is filled with assiduous grooves and -- despite its "trendy" sounds -- it has more than stood the test of time. ...

| | Hitsville West - San Francisco's Uptown Soul CD (2007)
Patrice CD music
$14.75 With the exception of Sly & the Family Stone, the San Francisco Bay Area was not noted for having an especially large or important soul scene in the 1960s. Like most major cities, however, it produced more in the genre than is generally realized. This 24-track anthology principally draws on rare 45s issued between 1965-1969 on an assortment of small labels, also including five previously unreleased cuts. If you're accustomed to how collections of local soul rarities are usually packaged, you know the drill: these are largely promising singers and groups who are consciously trying to imitate bigger artists and national trends (most frequently Motown, though also some soul-pop dance sounds), never getting anywhere commercially or even getting a chance to record much. As such compilations go, though, it's decent, and largely geared toward uptempo pop-tinged soul that's guaranteed to put smiles on the faces of many a Northern soul fan on British dancefloors. There's some good, slightly rough-around-the-edges energy to many of the performances that makes them less formulaic than many such regional releases. Of course, sometimes the role models get a little too obvious; Troy Dodds' "The Earthquake," for instance, is trying its damnedest to sound like early Marvin Gaye circa "Can I Get a Witness," and fooling no one in the process. The Magicians' far more likable "Why Must You Cry (I Deeply Love You)" is a spot-on emulation of the early Miracles, but quite enjoyable and accomplished despite its unoriginality. The Tandels' previously unissued sweet soul ballad "Why Did Our Love Go" makes for a nice change of pace, as does the aforementioned Magicians' lush "Why Do I Do These Foolish Things." ~ Richie Unterberger
The San Francisco Bay Area was not known as a center for urban soul productions in the 1960s, yet judged on the contents of Hitsville West, the the region was just as capable of generating ...

Leaving the safety and familiarity of Tamla/Motown has seen many artists take a flight to obscurity. Gaye turned it on its head and made his most successful album for over ten years. The pivotal track is "Sexual Healing," an idea given to him by his biographer David Ritz and co-written with Odell Brown. This track alone is worth the price of the album (even though it was a single). It oozes greatness with every second and was the last great Marvin Gaye song. And for the record, he played drums, piano, organ, bells, synths and bongos. A premier voice lost to the world.
1982's MIDNIGHT LOVE turned out to be Marvin Gaye's final offering to the world, but his swan song was a moving and effective one. He managed to fuse his sensual, '70s-oriented brand of sinuous, progressive R&B with more electronic-based '80s production techniques, including drum machines, sequencers and synthesizers. It's a tribute to his artistry that the blend was so seamless and organic.
"Sexual Healing," the signature tune from MIDNIGHT LOVE, combined the carnal with the spiritual in a manner rivaling vintage (secular) Al Green. This release reissues MIDNIGHT LOVE with a fascinating additional disc that features unreleased material from that album's sessions. The additional material, including alternate mixes, instrumental versions and even a rehearsal recording of "Sexual Healing" isn't really revelatory, but it's consistently intriguing, and a welcome look into the creative process of R&B's late, tortured genius.
