| | Pop Will Eat Itself Box Frenzy CD - Import Pop Will Eat Itself Discography of CDs
Includes liner notes by Andrew Collins. CD contains 9 bonus tracks. A hint (some might say warning) of what was to come on its follow-up record, the sample-heavy Box Frenzy is a fury of hip-hop, rock, and dance. Pop Will Eat Itself had yet to fully develop their wildy eclectic sound and satirization of politics, so there's a few odd numbers here. Among those is "Inside You," an innocent pop song that borders on cheesy new wave. Box Frenzy's imaginative sampling is culled from unlikely places and the band openly admits to lifting sounds from television and other artists. They even describe how they sample in the comical "Hit the Hi-Tech Groove." Much of this wouldn't have gone over too well in the late '90s. Considering this was released in 1987, it's rather impressive. ~ Kenyon Hopkin
2003 remastered reissue of 1987 album with updated sleevenotes, pictures, memorabilia, & nine bonus tracks, 'Bubbles', 'Ugly', 'Picnic In The Sky', 'On The Razors Edge', 'Kiss That Girl', 'Def Con One', 'Hit The Hi Tech Groove' (Live), 'She's Surreal' (Live), & 'Pop Will Eat Itself At Def Con One'. | | Gang Of Four Hard/Solid Gold CD (2003)
Box Frenzy
$10.49 Gang Of Four were a British new wave band formed in 1980 by lead singer Jon King and guitarist Andy Gill. They had four albums hit the Billboard charts between 1981 & 1983. Two of those albums comprise this 2-on-1 CD. Hard is making its worldwide CD debut and Solid Gold has been out of print for years. Wounded Bird. 2003.
Personnel: Andrew Gill (vocals, guitar, drums); Jon King (vocals, melodica); Chuck Kirkpatrick, Brenda White, Alfa Anderson (vocals). This twofer combines the seminal post-punk band Gang Of Four's second album with their fourth--the last studio album before their initial breakup in 1984. Though SOLID GOLD was originally less highly thought of than the band's debut, ENTERTAINMENT, it nevertheless contains two of their best songs: "Paralysed," Andy Gill's chilling narrative of the crushing effects of capitalism, and the joyful, whooping ersatz disco of "To Hell With Poverty." 1983's HARD found drummer Hugo Burnham replaced by a drum machine. Additionally, the album's production substituted ...

| | Fool's Gold CD (2009)
Box Frenzy
$9.25 Starting out as Dan Fogelberg's backing band, Fool's Gold decided to strike out on their own with this eponymous disc. Full of high harmony and easy country-rock tunes, Fool's Gold will warm the hearts of anyone who is a fan of such bands as the Eagles or Poco. Highlights include "Rain, Oh Rain," "Rollin' Fields and Meadows," and a cover of Fogelberg's own "Old Tennessee." Helped out by such friends as Glyn Johns, Glenn Frey, and Joe Walsh along the way, Fool's Gold has just the right blend of country and rock to entice listeners to enjoy this fine album. ~ James Chrispell In a similar spirit to artists like Extra Golden and NOMO, the music of L.A.'s Fool's Gold is fundamentally rooted in -- not merely inspired by -- international (and more specifically, African) sounds and styles, even if they essentially emerged within the context of American indie rock (for one thing, three of the band's members overlap with the more straight-ahead indie outfit Foreign Born.) This self-titled debut finds the group -- a 12-strong cohort led by bassist/vocalist Luke Top and lead guitarist Lewis Pesacov, featuring a pair of saxophonists and a full four members devoted ...
