Dar Williams' fifth album THE BEAUTY OF THE RAIN finds the singer-songwriter getting around the loneliness of being "a girl with a guitar" and chronicling her move from New York City to Massachusetts by breaking out her little black book to reel in a number of famous names. The result is a fuller-sounding album minus the kind of forced chemistry that occurs when it's an artist's label rather than the artist who arranges such an all-star affair. This organically flowing record benefits from the contributions of people like Alison Krauss (the harmony-brushed "The One Who Knows"), Blues Traveler's John Popper (a chugging "I Saw a Bird Fly Away"), and trumpeter Chris Botti (the subdued title cut).
Other guests are more content to blend into the musical background, be it Bela Fleck (a twangy "Fishing in the Morning") or Medeski, Martin & Wood organist John Medeski (the stirring "Farewell to the Old Me.") RAIN also finds Williams delivering a chilling reading of the Band's "Whispering Pines" and forming a rare songwriting partnership with former Hooter Rob Hyman (the lightly trilling "Closer to Me.")

Dar Williams Beauty Of The Rain Songs Beauty Of The Rain Music Review Average Rating: (4.2 out of 5 stars) Dar does it again. This a great CD from beginning to end. Dar's music and subject matter have matured and the results are great! Dar Williams addresses the issues and situations of the real world with a unique perspective. She receives help from many quality musicians including John Popper and Bela Fleck. This is a must have record. Submitted by a reviewer (Fort Dodge, IA USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Still an UN-gentrified Dar! Dar is in love and happy, so I was expecting an ewey gooey fresh and fruity new album. After viewing the track list - "Farewell To The Old Me" - I found myself fearful. Fearful we would find an album dedicated to an explanation of Dar's seemingly meaningless journey through life until…love. I was bracing myself for the worst - was our Flinty Kind Of Woman gone? Would Dar now be more prone to be afraid of women? Would our superhero move to Connecticut, buy a Volvo, and forget all about the hills of Iowa? My anxiety boiled down to one very simple, yet most important question…how was Dar's marriage going to impact us - the fans. Hold onto to your birks all ye apprehensive Ani fans -
Dar William's The Beauty of the Rain is a delight. Dar's latest release is another glimpse into this brilliant songwriter's imagination. Though her profoundly personal reflections permeate The Beauty of the Rain, Dar's beloved wit (The World's Not Falling Apart) and whimsical musings (Fishing in the Morning) are ever-present. A well-rounded, thoughtful, enchanting effort from one of our most skillful songwriters. Submitted by a reviewer (Philadelphia, PA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Dar-ling New Flavors Though initially longing for the personal intimacy I experienced with Dar under the spell of her early albums such as Honesty Room, I found this collaboration to be a fun listen with Dar revealing herself in an interesting mix of new flavors. Here her genius shines as a part of a bigger whole rather than as a singular luminary. The gift of her singing, songwriting, and performing is in her deep connection with the human experience. Beautiful! Dar William's music continues to transport one to a place of reflective serenity! Her A-list collaborators on this album add to the music rather than detract. Dar has an amazing ability to weave the lyrics and notes together in a way that you find yourself smiling in recognition or frowning in consternation at the truths in her reflections and observations on life. This CD is worth purchasing! I've listened to it in the car now for almost a week since purchasing it! Submitted by a reviewer (Havertown, PA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
"Beauty of the Rain" and its bland lyrics After listening to this cd many times, the only song that stands out is "Mercy of the Fallen".This song is worth one star because of its lyrics and has a folk music feel to it. The other 10 songs on the album are filled with bland pop favored lyrics execept for the song 'Whispering Pines" which should have not made a cut on this album.Over all this is not a folk album, but a pop album filled with bad lyrics.
