Originally released on July 18, 1968, the Grateful Dead's second release ANTHEM OF THE SUN combined a number of 8-track studio recordings with several live 4-track recordings to create a nearly continuous concert presentation on each side of the original LP. (Side 1 [cuts 1-3] is 18:06; Side 2 [cuts 4-5] is 20:45.) In a process that took the better part of six months to complete, Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh and engineer Dan Healy transferred many segments of tape onto one 8-track recorder. The resulting pastiche was remixed in 1971 at Alembic Studios by Bob Matthews and Betty Cantor. The track indexing and running time do not correspond at all to what's listed on the cover (although the song title listing is correct.)

On 1968's ANTHEM OF THE SUN, the Grateful Dead stopped being just another band on the San Francisco scene and began initiating their own myth. Outgrowing the white-boy blues jamming of their debut and of their many SF contemporaries, the Dead graduated to an advanced, more lysergically influenced style--not just singing about Alice's adventures in that other world down the hole, but participating in them. Adventurous and grand, ANTHEM OF THE SUN was the first result of the muse that author Ken Kesey's infamous Acid Tests brought out in Grateful Dead music.
The abstract chaos and freeform beauty that the Dead provided as the house band at the Acid Tests grew into a modernist polyrhythmic roar. The material now took on extended forms, and ANTHEM OF THE SUN was split between essentially two sections: the post-Hendrix electric clamor of "That's It For The Other One," and Pigpen's "Alligator," a hard-rocking, bluesy boogie powered by Garcia's liquid-grunge tone and the drummers' undeniable thrust--which segues into "Caution (Do Not Stop On The Tracks)"--a rollng bit of double-time chaos, over which Pigpen speed-raps Neal Casady-like improv tales.

| | Gabrielle Roth Tongues CD (1995)
Anthem Of The Sun music CDs
$13.85 All songs written by Gabrielle Roth except "Psalm" (Allison Cornell) and "Ram" (Jai Uttal).
Most of Roth's albums contain some vocals, but they seldom pull in front of the percussive textures. Tongues brings the voice and melodic lines to the footlights. "Psalm" sets the voices as a gospel choir, with the soprano sax (Cornelius Bumpus) crying as soloist. "Suma" has a saucy, virile South American bounce (one of Roth's most lyrical pieces); featured is Cyro Baptista on vocals and percussion. "Silver Desert Cafe" is a colorful piece, slightly intoxicated, with the flavor of an Egyptian "cantina." On "Chatter," Robert Ansell plays the tone box while a variety of sharp-toned percussion instruments compete in spitfire rapidity; the vocals here are harmonic drones (Carter Burwell) and asides from turntable master DJ Chill Freez. Like some Cuban space rock opera, the title cut funks and grooves with a real stand made by the women. "Rest Your Tears Here" has a heavy Louisiana blues feeling; Monty leads the hypnotic song/poem, while the women's voices follow like echoes down empty city streets. "Ram" is composed by Jai Uttal, is an Indian-flavored chant honoring the ancient god; Allison Cornell's violin and viola are dynamic, yet mournful. The suspenseful "Stillpoint" features the zenlike bamboo flute of Steve Gorn. Music director Gabrielle Roth (listen for her as the Spirit ...

| | Nylons Rockapella CD (1989) (Import) Canada
Anthem Of The Sun music CDs
$15.75 The Nylons' performing career began in 1980 at a time when a cappella outfits were not in vogue. The fact that the Nylons were unlike any a cappella act on the scene made them stand out and earned them accolades and a devoted audience almost immediately. The band has existed in one form or another for more than 25 years, but it is the original quartet of Claude Morrison, Arnold Robinson, Paul Cooper, and Marc Connors that created their most beloved recordings. Rockapella, their fifth album (and final release by the original quartet) is a real mixed bag. By no means is it a bad album, but it sounds like the boys gave in to their record company's demands to make a commercial album and, because they attempted to make a contemporary album for 1989, it's over-produced and now sounds dated and of its time. It's a shame, really, because the Nylons' performances on this album sound spirited and electrified. The arrangement of "Drift Away" is almost embarrassing as it attempts to update their sound and add a silly intro that sounds more like Run-D.M.C. (sans the rapping). For a moment, "Love This Is Love" sounds like a distant cousin of Baltimora's "Tarzan Boy," which doesn't ruin the track but doesn't do it any favors, either. On paper, "Poison Ivy" sounds like it would be a perfect cover for the quartet, but it comes off as forced and ends up sitting there and twitching for three and a half minutes (that is, if you can last that long). Apart from those missteps, the rest of the album is smooth sailing. "(All I Have to Do Is) Dream" features a gorgeous, simple arrangement and is one of their best covers. "Busy Tonight" is a flawless Nylons gem with Connors' sweet vocals sounding as angelic as ever. "Wildfire" is another tour de force for Connors, but the sampled vocals and production suck a little life ...
