UP! marks Shania Twain's emergence from a five-year hiatus that found her absconding to Switzerland and having a child with husband/producer/collaborator Robert "Mutt" Lange. As ever, Twain continues to be the master of the pop crossover. This time around, she takes 19 songs presents two different versions of each, divided between a pair of discs. CD 1 (the "Red CD") features more rock-flavored versions as opposed to CD2 (the "Green CD"), which includes considerably more pedal steel guitar et al.
Regardless of the genre, Twain and Lange continue to make a formidable pop-writing team. The two manage to craft catchy cuts on topics ranging from mundane situations in a relationship like who's behind the wheel (the sassy "In My Car [I'll Be The Driver]") to weightier fare like rampant materialism (a mechanized "Ka-Ching!") and female empowerment (the soaring "She's Not Just A Pretty Face"). Otherwise, Twain tills the fertile nuances of romance via convincing balladry that touches on dalliances with the green-eyed devil (a heartfelt "I'm Jealous") a

Up!
$38.09 DREAMS is a 4-CD box set compiling in chronological order tracks by the Allman Brothers Band, as well as tracks by bands featuring one or more member of the Allman Brothers Band and solo performances by Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts.
Recorded between 1966 & 1988. Includes a 32-page illustrated booklet and liner notes by John Swenson.
Like nearly all box sets, DREAMS has plenty to recommend it-and a few nagging drawbacks. The set's chief shortcoming is its two conflicting goals: providing an overview of the Allmans' history, thus attracting buyers seeking the ultimate hits package, and including enough unreleased tracks and rarities to appeal to the band's most devoted fans. As a result, DREAMS is neither the definitive Allman Brothers collection nor the gift to hardcore fans that, say, THE BOOTLEG SERIES is to Dylan-philes.
DREAMS' strengths are considerable. First and foremost, the box contains nearly five wall-to-wall hours of great music. By including everything from early demos to Gregg Allman and Dickie Betts' solo material, DREAMS does a great job of tracing the group's musical evolution from hippie blues band to kings of ...

| | Shania Twain Greatest Hits CD (2004)
Up!
$10.45 With the help of her husband, "Mutt" Lange, a legendary producer who helmed mammoth hits by AC/DC and Def Leppard, Canadian songstress Shania Twain developed a highly commercial style of country-tinged pop music that helped her become one of the biggest stars in America. Though GREATEST HITS doesn't include the two major singles from her 1993 self-titled debut, Twain has released so many hits that the 21-track disc is still overflowing with familiar chart-busters. Listening to these ubiquitous songs all in one stretch will leave listeners awed at the breadth of Twain and Lange's incredible talent for catchy pop ditties that sound cutting-edge while still retaining that ever-important hint of Nashville twang. In fact, though laced with the usual fiddles and steel guitars, many songs end up recalling ABBA and the Cars as much as anything south of the Mason-Dixon Line. Of course, the main attraction is always Twain's smoothly sensual voice, which has won over millions of fans worldwide.

| | Sawyer Brown Mission Temple Fireworks Stand CD (2005)

$6.09 Sawyer Brown crank up the volume on 2005's MISSION TEMPLE FIREWORKS STAND, angling for a sound that owes more to cowboy-hat-wearing country rock than it does to the mainstream country-pop the band is usually associated with. | | Suzy Bogguss 20 Greatest Hits CD (2002)
Up!
$11.69 Arguably, Suzy Bogguss did more than anybody to change the role of the female vocalist during the 1990s. Certainly she racked up her share of hits -- which are chronicled without fault on this collection. But more than that, she was a singer who weathered the Nash Vegas storms with grace, took control of her own career, and became producer of her own recordings. She selected material rather than having Jimmy Bowen -- the cohort in the producer's chair -- select it for her. She broke all the rules regarding genres from Western Swing yodels (Patsy Montana's "I Wanna Be A Cowboy's Sweetheart") to cowboy songs (Ian Tyson's "Someday Soon"), modern Americana (John Hiatt's "Drive South" and Nanci Griffith's "Outbound Plane"), to recording the work of cutting-edge Nashville songwriters such as Matraca Berg and Gary Harrison ("Diamonds And Tears" and "Eat At Joe's"), as well as Kim Richey's "From Where I Stand," to songwriting "One More For The Road" and "Far And Way" with Doug Crider, to interpreting the classics (Jimmie Rodgers' "In The Jailhouse Now"). It's one thing to record songs of a different stripe and to break down the barriers between genres; it's ...

| | Michael Martin Murphey Geronimo's Cadillac CD (1972) (Import) Australia
Up!
$19.99 After all of Michael Martin Murphey's material is taken into consideration, Geronimo's Cadillac comes out on top as one of his finest albums, even though his "cosmic cowboy" persona was yet to be developed. The title track was Murphey's first Top 40 hit, later covered by Cher and Hoyt Axton, while the Monkees eventually sang their own version of "What Am I Doing Hangin' 'Round?" But the most relevant aspect of Geronimo's Cadillac is the fact that it merges Murphey's slight left of center country sound with a little bit of gospel in a few places, giving his material greater depth and a genuine "reflective" quality that was often absent from commonplace country music. Tracks like "Backslider's Wine," "Calico Silver," and "Boy From the Country" all contain a unique musical complexion inspired by Murphey's voice and by the simplicity of the harmonica and mandolin. Later albums expose more of Murphey's penchant for being pensive and openly contemplative but, as a debut, Geronimo's Cadillac, with its three parts country to one part AM rock, is an enjoyable album as well as a worthy indication as to what kind of artist Michael Martin Murphey would soon become. ~ Mike DeGagne
Geronimo's Cadillac is the evidence that once upon a time, long before he was appointed the patron saint and musical sage of the Southwestern cowboy nation, Michael Martin Murphey was just Texas singer/songwriter Michael Murphey. After a period in California in the '60s, he returned to Austin, became part of the magical age of Texas songwriters, and signed to A&M. The two albums he cut for the label are undisputed classics of the genre; Murphey's sentimental overblown later music couldn't have been further removed from their enigmatic mystery. Geronimo's Cadillac and Cosmic Cowboy Souvenir were produced by Bob Johnston -- the guy who worked with Bob Dylan on Nashville Skyline and John Wesley Harding -- in Nashville (but they don't sound like it). They capture perfectly a kind of restless, irreverent, and optimistic aesthetic that encompassed country, pop, rock, and true Americana from Stephen Foster to Woody Guthrie. The cast includes Gary P. Nunn, Robert Livingstone, Owen Castleman, Kenny Buttrey, poet Charles John Quarto, and Leonard Arnold. The album kicks off with the title track, a romantic country-rock gospel-esque anthem -- which has been covered by many others but never equaled -- blending Murphey's trademark fascination with Western history, social commentary, and a rich sense of humor. "Natchez Trace," with Arnold's dirty Dobro and slide work pacing along with the loose acoustic mix, features Murphey's slightly raspy down-home funky tenor bringing the long lonesome wanderlust of the best in Texas music to bear on the tune. "Calico Silver" is a ballad that hints at what ...
