Atlanta garage rock maniacs Black Lips have achieved a level of notoriety that's allowed them to be seen on Conan O'Brien's show and year-end "best of" lists everywhere. Their debut, BLACK LIPS!, finds them in the cocoon but growing their rock-&-roll wings. "Stone Cold" is a drunken zombie swamp blues, "Steps" manages to evoke the title with choppy guitar and a beat, and "Crazy Girl" plays up the fuzzy punk aspect of their sound. Though the Lips played in a retro pond, they never once sounded like an oldies act.
Listen to the first couple of cuts from the Black Lips' self-titled debut album and it sounds like you've uncovered yet another nuevo-garage rock band with an extra shot of punk rock attitude. All well and good, but let the album sink in and you realize these kids have a bit more up their sleeves -- the tres-wasted psychedelia of "Freakout," the creepy blues crawl of "Stone Cold" and "Down and Out," and the free-form dementia of "You're Dumb" prove these guys have been absorbing their influences from any number of less than wholesome sources. A bit like the Dwarves pre-Blood Guts & Pussy, the Black Lips are looking for something dirty, dangerous, and just plain unhealthy beneath the energetic veneer of garage punk, and on this album they don't have much trouble finding it. While the performances are often ragged to the point of near collapse, that seems to be the point much of the time, and the addled wail of singer Cole Alexander is a fine mouthpiece for this journey through the gutters of your mind. Savage and not for the squeamish, but cool stuff for folks who like their rhythm hooch in a dirty glass. ~ Mark Deming

Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) 4 stars

4 stars Grungy garage-punk-rock from Atlanta
This Atlanta quartet spins out the sort of ragged, blues-edged garage rock that brings to mind the early lineups of 1980s revivalists like The Salvation Army, The Chesterfield Kings and The Lyres. But in the case of The Black Lips, two decades further removed from the mid-60s garage and roughed up by the sterility of 90s pop music, their sound is even rougher, with less focus on ’60s style and more concentration of raw, adrenal playing.

Vocalist Cole Alexander sings in a hyperactive, rusty growl that’s exaggerated by a tinny microphone, studio distortion, and the band’s underlying thrash of guitars, bass and drums. At times the songs spiral into chaos (much like their live shows are reported to do), but the reverb-soaked blues "Stone Cold" settles down for a slow-motion examination.

This Bomp LP was delayed a few months when guitarist Ben Eberbaugh was killed in a freak car accident. In his honor, the band collected all of the tracks they’d recorded to that point, including early singles, to create this CD. It’s a fitting overview of the band’s first, savagely good incarnation.

A range of emotions played out via a range of rock-&-roll styles, TIME BOMB HIGH SCHOOL is a high-water mark in the lengthy career of garage-rock mover and shaker Greg Cartwright. Kicking off with a raucous cover of the standard "Stormy Weather," the album touches on everything from power pop and singer-songwriter country to classic R&B and soul without compromising its basic guitar-driven punk energy.
While garage rock often prioritizes sloppy energy over skill and traditional musicianship, on TIME BOMB HIGH SCHOOL, Cartwright's considerable abilities as a songwriter, his clear love of pop music's rich past (in addition to "Stormy Weather," the album contains several other choice covers), and his obvious desire to communicate ...

Dirtbombs Dangerous Magical Noise CD  (2003)

Black Lips!
CD $11.85  3.5 stars Audio Samples Definitive Album
Following the all-covers ULTRAGLIDE IN BLACK with a set of like-minded originals, the Dirtbombs prove that their revved-up modern take on vintage garage rock and greasy R&B is every bit as solid as their influences. Frontman Mick Collins, playing guitar in front of two bassists and two drummers, is as frenzied and passionate as ever on tracks like the bluesy "Sun Is Shining" and the Merseyside power pop of "Earthquake Heart." Elsewhere, "I'm Through With White Girls" overtly plays with the implications of a black man fronting an otherwise white, punky band in a way that most wouldn't dare, and does so with sly good humor.
After their rollicking tribute to soul music on 2001's excellent Ultraglide in Black, Detroit's Dirtbombs have gone back to thee garage. Dangerous Magical Noise is an exciting, sweaty, loud, and dirty record, their best yet. Best songs, best production (by the always reliable Jim Diamond), best everything. Mick Collins and his gang of thugs are on top of the heap of over-hyped rock coming out of Detroit quicker than the Tigers' and Lions' annual collapses. Like their compatriots the White Stripes, they never stoop to mere re-creation but rather slap their inspirations around a little, steal their lunch money, and leave them sucking dust. From the ...

..."Spirit Made Flowers Grow" This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.
Black Lips: Cole (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Jack (vocals, guitar); Joe (vocals, keyboards, drums); Jared (vocals, bass guitar).
Black Lips' second LP, 2004's WE DID NOT KNOW THE FOREST SPIRIT MADE THE FLOWERS GROW, was an evolution of their aggressively primitive garage punk into recognizable song forms without sacrificing their originally savage approach. "Dawn of the Age of Tomorrow" is late-night electric blues slowed down and warped; the busted organ stomp of "Notown Blues" sounds like the rehearsal tapes of a long-forgotten 1968 high school prom act. Subsequent releases showed the Lips refining their music over the long haul, but they came closest to pure, threatening caveman rock & roll right here.
The Black Lips take Back from the Grave-style garage punk frenzy to such extremes of slavering cacophony that they border on experimental noise rock at times. Tossing musical decorum out ...

While the Gun Club's debut, FIRE OF LOVE, was a masterpiece of untamed punk blues, follow-up album MIAMI, produced by Blondie's Chris Stein, achieves a fuller sound and a more varied stylistic palette without sacrificing any of its predecessor's intensity. The revved-up blues of yore are still here ("Devil in the Woods," "Fire of Love"), but wild-child singer Jeffrey Lee Pierce and company also tackle everything from Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Run ...

Additional personnel: Vanessa Gonzalez (accordion, piano); Simon Shrine (trumpet).
Genuine danger in music is all too rare. And although the members of Black Lips themselves aren't too frightful, their tunes--and the dark, anarchic vibes they generate--do intimidate. The title LET IT BLOOM, from a band that calls their music "flower punk," might imply a gentle crossover record, like John Denver covering now-mainstreamed punk standards, but the Atlanta band's sloppy brew is too rambunctious and wobbly too be pinned down. Electric blues, country, garage, and punk are all here.
The album highlight, "Hippie Hippie Hooray," channels both "House of the Rising Sun" and "Paint It Black" as Cole Alexander laughs through a thick fog of reverb over snake-charmer guitars, tambourine, and a random series of false endings. "Boomerang" is blues jangle a la SORRY MA-era Replacements, while "Punk Slime" holds true to its name. Black Lips are one of the few bands that can honestly claim to be keeping the spirit of rock & roll ...

Atlanta garage-punk kingpins the Black Lips made a name for themselves outside garage circles thanks to an infamously rambunctious live show that was known to involve all manner of flying fluids. Fittingly, their first album for Vice Records, LOS VALIENTES DEL MUNDO NUEVO, was a set recorded live in Tijuana, Mexico. A raucous session by any standard, the album set the stage for the Lips' studio debut for Vice, the excellent GOOD BAD NOT EVIL.
Though GBNE is as much of a stomping good time as any other Lips album, it displays a newfound focus on craft and nuance over chaos and raunch. "Veni Vidi Vici" and "Step Right Up" offer polished updates on '60s ...

Tiny Vipers--the chosen performance name of avant-folkster Jesy Fortino--plays folk music that has very little to do with freak-folk posterboy Devendra Barnhart. Instead, Fortino imagines that the freak-folk explosion never happened and draws a straight line from her new EP, HANDS ACROSS THE VOID, to the '90s scenes focused on Olympia's K Records and the anti-folk East Village. The gambit works: HANDS ACROSS THE VOID sounds fresh and achieves the intrigue that can make intimate, drony folk so riveting. Fortino consistently plays with the listener's expectations, using major-chord spikes in melody within minor key songs and well-placed analog synthesizer lines dropped just so. Wonderful stuff.
To distinguish herself from the ranks of other acoustic-based singer/songwriters, Jesy Fortino goes by the name Tiny Vipers. It's an apt nom de musique: the imagery of little snakes reflects how her subtle, delicate songs wind and wend their way into your brain instead of showing their brilliance ...
