Blazing through six songs in nine minutes, Numbers return with Ee-Uh!, an EP split evenly between three new studio recordings and live versions of some of their best-known songs. "Insomnia" captures the essence of the band's simple, angular sound with its sputtering, stuttering beats and beeps, while "At the Mall" features silly, surreal lyrics ("you're so tall/do you play basketball?") atop outbursts of clanging and screeching synths and guitars. The title track is the best of the new songs, an atonal study in rhythm and tension that is both more fleshed out and tighter than the other tracks here. The live tracks reveal Numbers' more crazed side, particularly on "Palo Alto," which sounds more deranged here with a thick blanket of static and noise than it originally did on the split single with Erase Errata on which it originally appeared; "Information" gains an almost Servotron-like cast in a live setting, and "We Like Having These Things," which is the closest thing to a manifesto that the band has written so far, sounds all the more anthemic. While it's not as complete a look at the band as Numbers Life -- and of course, it's not meant to be -- Ee-Uh! is still a welcome stop-gap release until Numbers comes out with another album. ~ Heather Phares

Numbers includes: Indra Dunis (vocals, drums); Dave Broekema (guitar); Eric Landmark (synthesizer).

Columbia Records has been diligent about going through Miles Davis' massive catalog, painstakingly remastering and reissuing his collected works in both handsome box sets sorted by period and actual releases annotated with extra material from their attendant sessions, but this gargantuan set marks a true departure for them. The Complete Miles Davis Live at Montreux 1973-1991 compiles 20 CDs documenting every performance by the trumpeter at the famed Swiss jazz festival in its entirety. What's more, 19 of these volumes have never before been issued in any form. Aside from disc 19, which features the Miles band playing acoustically in front of a large orchestra conducted by Quincy Jones in 1991 (which was released by Warner Bros.) and a few selected cuts tacked onto other recordings, none of this material has seen the light of day anywhere. There is a story told here, one that streams light into ...

Glass Candy & The Shattered The Love Love Love CD  (2003)

CD $11.39  Audio Samples
Glass Candy & The Shattered Theatre includes: Andy Coronado (bass). A brief and brazen debut album, Glass Candy and the Shattered Theater's Love Love Love smashes the band's glam rock and no wave influences into pieces and reassembles them into something even more striking than either of those styles on its own. Striking is also an apt way to describe Ida No's heavily phased, scary yet sexy shrieks, wails, and snarls, which sound as if they're emanating from the bottom of an empty beer bottle or a dark alley. The rest of the band wisely avoids competing with her vocal acrobatics and keeps well out of her way, instead laying down simple but relentless grooves that occasionally erupt into free-form chaos, as on their reworking of the Stones' chestnut "The Last Time." Stripped down to a stomping rhythm and fuzzed-out bass and guitars, it's just as taunting as the original, albeit almost completely devoid of that version's bluesy melody. Aside from the song's instantly recognizable lyrics, it sounds as much a part of Glass ...

CD $10.89  4.8 stars Top 500 Audio Samples Definitive Album
New York's 1970s punk was markedly different to that of Britain. Rather than reject the past, American groups deconstructed its forms and rebuilt them with recourse to the music's strengths. Television's leader, Tom Verlaine, professed admiration for Moby Grape and the folk rock of early Fairport Convention. Elements of the latter appear on this album's title track, which offers a thrilling instrumental break, built upon a modal scale. Verlaine's shimmering guitar style provides the set's focus, but his angular compositions are always enthralling. A sense of brooding mystery envelops the proceedings, and Marquee Moon retains its standing as one of the era's pivotal releases. Rhino's 2003 expanded edition of Television's seminal debut, Marquee Moon, doesn't add much on the surface -- in addition to the de rigueur liner notes and loving packaging, ...

Recorded between 1978 & 2001. Includes liner notes by Robert Smith, Simon Gallup, and Johnny Black. A remarkable four-disc set of B-sides and rarities, JOIN THE DOTS serves as a sort of alternate history for the Cure, one of the world's most beloved post-punk/alt-rock bands. Painstakingly compiled by Cure frontman (and the group's only constant member) Robert Smith, DOTS provides dozens of glimpses into the literal flip-side of their singles by collecting many long-lost tracks, including the classic songs previously featured only on the cassette version of STARING AT THE SEA: THE SINGLES. Disc one begins in the late 1970s and consists of early tracks that show the Cure in a wildly adventurous mode--tearing into the punky "Pillbox Tales," drifting through the gloomy "Descent," and bouncing along to the oddly danceable "Throw Your Foot." By disc two, ...

The Norwegian quartet Shining plays high-octane prog rock with the untamed energy of newly minted punks, though their various lengthy experimental pieces are highly focused and performed with a great degree of technical prowess. Influenced by such genre-bending iconoclasts as the 1960s prog rock progenitors Soft Machine and '00s keepers of the flame the Mars Volta, the band's feats of musical dexterity span the dizzying changes of the saxophone outing "The Red Room" and the alternately pulverizing and delicate "Stalemate Longan Runner." After the free-for-all progressive jazz of their previous album "In The Kingdom Of Kitsch You Will Be A Monster", young Norwegian quartet Shining seem to have gone all-out for operatic metal and ridiculously elaborate instrumental flourishes in the vein of someone like Dream Theater. Initially, it all sounds incredibly, ...
