That there even is a tribute album to a teenage singer with only one album under her belt is credit to the marketing escalator that Avril Lavigne has ridden all the way to pop's top floor. While she is routinely credited/blamed with expanding/distorting the notion of what a female pop star should be, Lavigne's success is due in large part to a savvy mix of her vocal strengths and top-shelf professional songwriting. Sure, there's Lavigne herself, who delights in pranks like flipping the bird at TV cameras and goofing around with her good-natured band of interchangeable skateboard dudes. But behind the Hot Topic wristbands, tank tops, camo, and neckties is a gigantic machine called hype whose engine never stops running. It's that hype that's responsible for this shameless tribute record. Versions of "Complicated," "Sk8er Boi," "Losing Grip," and nine other tracks from Let Go are performed here by a group of unknown studio musicians masquerading under the moniker Ex-Prom Queens; "Too Much to Ask" was inexplicably left off. Mostly, Tribute to Avril Lavigne is just creepy, since it's obvious that the woman singing is much older than Lavigne (i.e., an adult). It makes the catty, freshman-homeroom lyrics of "Complicated" and "Sk8er Boi" pretty hard to take. Removing Lavigne's precocious attitude problem from the songs is even more weird, simply because they were co-written by her with big-league songwriters like the Matrix, who presumably are not teenagers, either. Maybe there should have been a tribute to Lavigne's marketing and management teams, instead of this confusing release. ~ Johnny Loftus

What?!!!! First of all, why in the hell does this album exist? The idea of a tribute to Avril Levigne is completely ridiculous to begin with. Come on people, it's Avril, not Madonna or someone else who actually deserves a tribute because they have talent and more than one hit album under their belt. This is just proof that the teenie boppers are taking over, and it's getting harder to find quality music because crap like this is being released instead. Somebody, please, help us! $14.49 Buoyed by the popularity of the hit contemporary pop ballad "Home," singer Michael Bublé's 2005 album, IT'S TIME, clearly positioned the vocalist as the preeminent neo-crooner of his generation. Easily the singer's most stylistically wide-ranging album so far, 2009's CRAZY LOVE is also one of his brightest, poppiest, and most fun. Bublé kicks things off with the theatrical, epic ballad "Cry Me a River" and proceeds to milk ...

$12.85 After the initial shock fades, the existence of CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART seems perhaps inevitable. These are the songs Dylan chooses to sing ...

Tribute To Avril Lavigne
$12.85 True Margrit's signature piano-pop is whip smart, expertly crafted, and has more hooks than a pirate ship. On SEAWORTHY, the trio's 4th and most ambitious album to date, True Margrit navigates the waters of interpersonal politics, vanity, history, time-travel, and mortality, and arrives wth a group of songs that is both emotionally raw and musically evolved.True Margrit's sound is fueled by singer/ songwriter/piano-player Margrit Eichler's husky-sweet alto, her adventuresome piano, and a secret weapon: the muscular, dynamic, turn-on-a-dime rhythm-section of Gary Hobish on bass and Andrew Bacon on drums.SEAWORTHY is fleshed out with touches of guitar, cello, oboe, bassoon, sax, and flute by an array of Bay Area guest stars including Pam Delgado and Jeri Jones (of Blame Sally), Amy Meyers, Kat Downs, Carrie Adler, Ned Howey, and Symon Michael.Although reminiscent of Ben Folds, Fiona Apple, Elvis Costello, and Aimee Mann, True Margrit's sound is all their own--a ...

| | Papamutt Carey Portrait Of A New Orleans Master CD (2002)
Tribute To Avril Lavigne
$15.39 A significant and frankly unprecedented compact disc collection devoted to the mature works of New Orleans trumpeter Papa Mutt Carey, Upbeat's Portrait of a New Orleans Jazz Master combines recordings he made during the mid-'40s with his longtime collaborator trombonist Kid Ory; with pianist and blues singer Hociel Thomas (a relative of blues legends Hersal Thomas and Sippie Wallace), and as leader of his own band, Mutt Carey's New Yorkers. Twenty-two titles and a pair of alternate takes, served up in a hearty broth of ragtime, blues, stomps, and swing, illuminate Carey's rock-solid stature as surviving early practitioner of classic Crescent City jazz and venerable hero of the Dixieland Revival. Although his discography traces back to 1922, these FDR/Truman-era recordings (along with other material from Kid Ory's Orson Welles
Edward "Kid" Ory (1886-1973) was one of the very first jazz trombonists, and is credited with perfecting and popularizing the growling tailgate style associated with the New Orleans jazz tradition. In 2003 the Upbeat Jazz label hauled off and released their Portrait of the Greatest Slideman Ever Born, a Kid Ory collection containing material drawn from the beginning, the middle, and the end of his lengthy performing career. "Ory's Creole Trombone" was recorded in Los Angeles in June of 1922. Present with Ory at that session (and gigging with him regularly at the Wayside Park Café) were trumpeter "Papa" Mutt Carey, clarinetist Dink Johnson, pianist Fred Washington, bassist Ed Garland, and drummer Ben Borders. Unfortunately, the excellent flipside ("Society Blues") is not included here. Tracks 2-22 constitute what are believed to be the complete Orson Welles Mercury Theater Radio Show air shot recordings of Ory and the "All Star Jazz Group," an ensemble brought together especially for Welles by Marili Morden, owner of the Jazz Man Record Shop in Hollywood and future spouse of Nesuhi Ertegun, the co-founder of Atlantic Records. A devout jazz head, Morden sought Ory out, discovered him sorting mail at the Santa Fe railway station in L.A., and convinced him to come out of retirement. The Welles broadcasts, then, are precious artifacts of this musician's triumphal comeback, a return to active musicianship that rekindled his interest in a career that would continue for more than 25 years. In addition to Ory and Carey, the "All Star ...
