| | Masada Quintet Stolas: Book Of Angels Volume 12 CD (2009)
Hossam Ramzy Presents Egyptian Sufi CD music
$12.99 STOLAS is the 12th volume in John Zorn's BOOK OF ANGELS series of compositions, and it's a welcome and compelling idea that he decided to re-form his stellar Masada quintet for the occasion. In addition to the rhythm section of Joey Baron and Greg Cohen, trumpeter Dave Douglas, and pianist Uri Caine, Zorn enlisted tenor sax giant Joe Lovano to replace him on all but one cut where he adds his alto, making the group a sextet. Here klezmer, Yiddish folk music, bossa nova, and other Latin jazz all come together in a seamless meld of tunes that accent the symmetry of ensemble play as much as they do an extremely advanced sense of ensemble harmonics, rhythmic invention, and, of course, tautly arranged spaces for individual improvisation--check out the album's longest cut, "Tagriel," for evidence as Zorn's ...

Hossam Ramzy Presents Egyptian Sufi CD music
$10.75 Additional personnel includes: Glen DaCosta (tenor saxophone); David Madden (trumpet); Nambo (trombone); Devon Evans (percussion).
Digitally remastered by Ted Jensen (2001, Sterling Sound, New York, New York)
An interesting collection of singles and posthumously archived material created in the same way as Hendrix's CRASH LANDING and The Beatles "Free as a Bird," (albeit with most of the original musicians), CONFRONTATION is more consistent than one would expect and includes at least one certified classic in "Buffalo Soldier." The record features some very tasty guitar, good vocal performances and the always rock-steady rhythm section of the Barrett brothers. While not absolutely essential, it should certainly be the next purchase for anyone who already owns all of the official Marley albums. While the disc is perhaps a little light on variety, it's still a Bob Marley album and thus as good as the best work of many other artists. Overall, CONFRONTATION is great mellow summertime listening and a worthy addition to any reggae collection.
A posthumous collection produced ...

| | Jay Sherman-Godfrey Twoscore CD (2006)
Hossam Ramzy Presents Egyptian Sufi songs
$7.49 After years as a band member, sideman, session player, producer, and engineer, Jay Sherman-Godfrey has moved front and center with Twoscore, his solo debut. The EP's seven songs reflect his wide-ranging musical experience and influences - from the jangly, Califonia country of the late Byrds to the classic power-pop of Badfinger. He refers to his style as having a 'pop sensibility, country lean," an approach epitomized by his dramatic waltz-time reading of the Beach Boys' classic Girl Don't Tell Me, the centerpiece of the disc.Sherman-Godfrey is perhaps best known for producing and playing guitar on Laura Cantrell's debut CD, Not The Tremblin' Kind, and its follow-up, When The Roses Bloom Again. Each has received widespread critical acclaim, personal support and regular airplay from legendary BBC DJ John Peel, and a four-star review from Rolling Stone. More recently, he and Ms. Cantrell collaborated on the song Bees from her 2005 Matador release, Humming By The Flowered Vine. In addition to Ms. Cantrell, Sherman-Godfrey has had the pleasure of working with They Might Be Giants, Amy Rigby, Michael Moore, Eric Ambel, Michael Shelley, Tandy, and Mojo Nixon, among others. In the early 80s, Sherman-Godfrey co-founded the seminal NYC country rock band World Famous Blue Jays ...
