| | Noel Coward In New York Soundtrack CD (2 Customer Reviews)
A follow-up to AT LAS VEGAS, Noel Coward's well-received 1955 concert album, IN NEW YORK finds the British showman setting up shop in a Manhattan recording studio. The result is a charming orchestral-pop record that plays up the uber-Englishman's temporary fish-out-of-water status, as best revealed on "I Like America," which features Coward humorously crooning about well-known U.S. locations and their respective stereotypes. ("In Dallas, Tex, they talk of sex, but only think of oil.") For listeners seeking a top-notch latter-day sampling of supreme Coward-ness (see, in particular, the high-society send-up "I Went to a Marvelous Party"), IN NEW YORK easily fits the bill.
Recorded in New York, New York in October and November 1956. Originally released on Columbia (5163). Includes liner notes by Will Friedwald.
Personnel includes: Noel Coward (vocals); Peter Matz (arranger, conductor, piano).

$10.65 Escapist treats abound from this mysterious, tongue-in-cheek collective from the Southern United States. Man or Astro-man? have an ear for yesterday's sounds of tomorrow, as they decorate their mostly instrumental tracks with obscure sound bytes from out-of-date sci-fi movies and forgotten TV shows. Silly, dangerous, occasionally sloppy, but never boring, their album Is It Man...or Astro-Man? is the answer for everyone running low on laser gun/go-go/surf/spy/cowboy/drag racing/'60s/bullfighter/Mars-invasion/motorbike ...

$13.95 Originally released on ABCS (OC3). Includes liner notes by Rick Ward, Jule Styne, Peter Filichia.
The 1964 Broadway musical Fade Out - Fade In seemed to have an unbeatable creative and performing team, including veteran songwriters Jule Styne, Betty Comden, and Adolph Green along with emerging star Carol Burnett. Burnett -- who had debuted on Broadway in Once Upon a Mattress five years earlier and since made a name for herself on television as a co-star of The Garry Moore Show (but was not yet a TV legend in her own right) -- was given a star vehicle in the show, set in 1930s Hollywood, and a strong supporting cast that featured stage veteran Jack Cassidy, comic actor Lou Jacobi, and soon-to-be TV star Tina Louise. ...

$7.69 Music composed by Harold Arlen. Lyrics written by Truman Capote.
This is part of Columbia Records "Broadway Masterworks" series.
House of Flowers, based on a celebrated Truman Capote novella about love in a brothel in the West Indies, failed as a Broadway musical, running only 165 performances from its opening on December 30, 1954. But the cast album, featuring Pearl Bailey, Diahann Carroll, and Juanita Hall, turned the show into a Broadway legend because it preserved one of Harold Arlen's best scores. Legendary backstage arguments among the principals may have ...
