You really have to hand it to Steve Albini. Constantly shrugging the term of producer, he remains the guy whose name follows the phrase "Recorded by" on countless CDs. And on those countless recordings, he lives up to the term that precedes his name. Wake Up Screaming by F-Minus is no exception. Albini tackles this project the same as always: pressing record and letting the band do all the rest. F-Minus is a unique project for the veteran engineer, as the band's style is more in the crust punk vein of things than the alternative or post-rock material with which he's more known to work. Perhaps one of the reasons for the appeal with a band like F-Minus is that they're not just a crust band. And Wake Up Screaming isn't just another crust album; its influences are as varied as the sound -- street punk, Oi!, grind, garage rock, thrash, and the list goes on. With dueling male and just as gruff female vocals, it makes for an album that doesn't ever get old despite misconceptions based on the genre. While much of the musical structure is traditional three-chord punk rock, F-Minus has found a way to not allow it to get redundant or seem too immature. The lyrical slant is dark and aggressive, showing the hurtful side of life but without overwhelming the listener. While the 15 songs on here aren't necessarily an integral part of the crust punk scene, fans will certainly enjoy this, and the bandmembers' ability to cover a broad musical spectrum just opens them up to gaining more fans without losing punk credibility in doing so. ~ Kurt Morris

CMJ (03/24/03, p.9) - "... The kinetic energy the group exudes is so overwhelming it's difficult to resist the urge to smash something while listening to its punk-rock rants.." F-Minus Wake Up Screaming Songs Wake Up Screaming Review

Wake Up Screaming album
$10.59 Well, it's about time! After three singles and lord knows how many years of squatting on the East Coast, Choking Victim has finally released an album on Epitaph. Of course, this doesn't mean that they'll be off the streets anytime soon, but at least they'll have that occasional royalty check coming in to pay for their beer money. So with No ...
| | Leftover Crack Fuck World Trade CD (2004) Digipak
Wake Up Screaming CD music
$11.99 Leftover Crack return their fire-stoked railroad spike to society's eye with the subtlety-banishing Fuck World Trade. The spike's iron cooled after 2001's Mediocre Generica, and little was heard from the New York squatter punks. But World Trade makes up for lost time -- it's provoking and nonconforming in double and triple amounts. "Clear Channel (Fuck Off!)" is a rallying cry even without its East Coast hardcore rumble, while "Life Is Pain" and "Gang Control" return to the scraggly ska-punk sound that's the band's strongest side. As a vocalist, Stza is, well, limited. But to spit vitriol and passion, you don't have to be the Velvet Fog. His pained whine leads the boys through a host of hyper upbeats and ...
| | Tara Nevins Mule To Ride CD (1999)
Wake Up Screaming music CDs
$12.39 On Tara Nevins' 1999 solo debut, Mule to Ride, she displays the earthy, earnest singing and playing that she's known for with her group, Donna the Buffalo. As with her work in the band, she accents her lilting voice and guitar work with flourishes of fiddle and accordion. With friends and guests like Ralph Stanley, Mike Seeger, Christine Balfa, and Don Rigsby lending a hand, Mule to Ride has a fun, festive feel that seeps into every song, whether it's reggae, an old-time jam, or one of Nevins' own songs. ~ Heather Phares

| | Van Halen II CD (1979) Remastered
Wake Up Screaming songs
$8.59 While it's tough to follow up a classic, VAN HALEN II comes close to matching the brilliance of the band's debut. Once again, the record begins with a fat bass line from Michael Anthony, and his piercing background vocals are featured on "You're No Good," an explosive cover of the Linda Ronstadt tune.
While the group's early material was slightly too heavy for Top 40 airplay, here they take a commercial stab with the brilliant "Dance the Night Away" and "Beautiful Girls." ...
| | Gary Lewis This Diamond Ring/A Session With CD (1999)
Wake Up Screaming album
$14.49 Gary Lewis & the Playboys have never been taken too seriously by rock historians, which is somewhat a matter of prejudice, growing out of the idea (only partly true) that Lewis had a free ride, thanks to the help of his then superstar entertainer father -- and their status as mid-'60s pop/rock entertainers, without a resident songwriter or a philosophy behind their work. They weren't great stylists, and the closest Lewis ever got to being a great drummer was getting a few pointers from his father's friend Buddy Rich. This two-albums-on-one-CD release shows ...
