| | Explorer Series: Bali - Gamelan & Kecak CD
Recorded in Bali in between May & October 1987. Originally released on Nonesuch (79204). Includes liner notes by David Lewiston.
For many musicians, Bali is still the last paradise on Earth; their music shows an unsurpassed originality and creativeness. Still today, new pieces are being composed by Balinese composers for the different existing ensembles. This CD, produced and recorded by American ethnomusicologist David Lewiston, gives us an overview of the large variety in Balinese music, of the different types of gamelan ensembles. The first piece is the music of the opening parade of the Bali Arts Festival on June 1987 (a festival taking place in June and July of every year on the island). You hear recently created ensembles, styles, and pieces as well as older ones. Among the recent musical creations of Balinese are the kecak, a type of rhythmic vocal play with short and percussive words which are used for trance dance. This type of singing, which came to life in the 1930s, is found only in Bali and is sung exclusively by men. Quite possibly one of the best Balinese CDs available! ~ Bruno Deschênes

$9.85 "The fringe thinkers" present:Mad musicWhile crossing the river, we felt formless objects under our feet. Yielding, smooth sculptures, with no particular use and probably designed for the sheer pleasure by mad artists. It is only then that we fully realized that we must shape reality at all costs in our own fashion. It is the only thing to do since there is no proper instruction guide for anything. This is why everything must continually be reinvented. Even though brand new stuff seldom pleases, one must keep on grinding, mashing, bending, melting tangible and intangible, concrete and abstract matter; because if living consists of doing and doing again what has already been done and done again, we will have lived in vain, and others could have done everything in our place. If on the other hand, we are the ones who draw the map and cut it ourselves in pieces that we scatter, we alone will own the key opening the adjoining door: the only place where dreams come to and end.About "Mad music"We all live and die.
