Ryan Raddon's rise in status as Kaskade has been a steady one. Moving from his native Chicago to bring house music to the musically barren salt flats of Utah via his Mechanised store and subsequent imprint, these releases on his own imprint lit the first spark of a relationship with the West Coast's esteemed Om label, at which he was eventually to take on an A&R position. "What I Say" signalled his arrival, one of those records which sounds as though it had always existed -- with Rob Wannamaker making an impression with a breathy lead line and thoughtful lyric, while the employment of guitarist Craig Poole for a bassline to die proved a club-rocking masterstroke which caught the sets of everyone from Pete Tong to King Britt. His debut album echoes the timeless qualities of that initial single, achieving a distant familiarity through a predilection with minor chords coupled with an ear for a great hook -- vocalists Joslyn and Amy Michelle providing a further flourish to Raddon's supremely confident production. The sleazy, Prince-like funk of "Get Busy" is a highlight within an album crammed with great tracks. ~ Kingsley Marshall

| | Gene Watson From The Heart CD (2001)
It's You, It's Me CD music
$18.99 Not much has changed musically from the 1970s/1980s Gene Watson to the 2001 Watson who has released From the Heart on RMG Records. He has been recording for nearly three decades, and it is perhaps his stylistic consistency and raw talent that keeps him afloat in the ever-changing tide of Nashville. Like the albums that contained hits such as "Love on a Hot Afternoon" and "Memories to Burn," this album is highly vocal and unmistakably traditional. It should come as no surprise that some of the most impressive material on the album are Watson's characteristically sincere love ballads, such as "When You're Not Looking Back" and "Would It Be Cheatin'," which isn't about cheating at all. As if to acknowledge the spirit of the country greats before him, Watson even includes the sorrowful "I Never Go Around Mirrors," written by the late, great Lefty Frizzell. Lovers of the traditional country scene will find that From the Heart lives up to its title -- that's where all of Gene Watson's music comes from. ~ Rick Cohoon
FROM THE HEART is more than just an album title for Gene Watson. True, it's his new cd from RMG Records, but the phrase "from the heart" is also definitive of the way the Texas troubadour delivers a song, whether live or in the studio. From the minute you hear "Next To Nothin'", the first track on FROM THE HEART, you understand instantly that Gene Watson is a stylist who's incapable of singing by rote. Every lyric carries an indisputable emotional punch. He wouldn't have it any other way. "The feeling's either there or it's not," Gene says. "If it's not, it's going to tell on you, because the minute you hit the stage, the audience is going to know the truth. When I'm in the studio, I'll sacrifice a little technical perfection for the feeling." But on FROM THE HEART, it's evident that Gene sacrificed nothing. Every tune on this cd is destined to become a classic, from the aching, "Next To Nothin'" to the working man anthem, "The Man An' Me And You". The roster of songwriting talent is a veritable "Who's Who", with compositions by Eddy Raven, Skip Ewing, Bill Anderson, Max T. Barnes, Leslie Satcher, Steve Dean and songwriting legends Whitey Shafer, Lefty Frizzell and Boudleaux Bryant. "I have been holding onto some of these songs for the past five or six years. I'm a pack rat that way!" Gene laughs. "When I come across a good song, the next session I go into might not be the right session for it, but that doesn't mean I get rid of it. I hang on to something until the time is right. I think if I ever did have a talent, it is the talent of knowing a good song." Good "song sense" is just one of Gene's talents. The unassuming vocalist also co-produced FROM THE HEART, alongside long-time friend and producer Ray Pennington. Their collaboration in the studio has resulted ...

It's You, It's Me album
$9.85 DJ Le Spam & the Spam Allstars blend improvisational electronic elements and turntables with latin, funk, hip hop and dub to create a sound that is unique - an electronic descarga. It's not a known genre. It's hard to describe. It attracts many types of people. But as we look out and see people dancing salsa, next to break-dancers, and festival-goers driving for hours to catch a show -- we know something very special is going on.Spam Allstars are road warriors -- a touring band. Perhaps one could say they are taking an 'old school' approach to sharing their music. For each performance they have, every music lover they meet, every time they bring yet another musician into the fold for a collaboration - Spam Allstars celebrate their opportunity to work as musicians and be creative each day. The band's newest release - electrodomesticos (Spamusica Records, 4/2007) -took roughly 18 months to record. Most of the sessions were done at the City of Progress studio in North Miami, FL, and produced by DJ Le Spam. All of it was recorded while working around a 200+ yearly performance schedule. DJ Le Spam wanted to capture certain moments with musicians that the band had played with over the last three years. The outcome is a refreshing ...
