Papa John DeFrancesco, the father of organist Joey DeFrancesco, is a fine organist himself. The weakness to his otherwise enjoyable set is that the tunes (with the exception of the pop song "You Are So Beautiful") are all either blues or near-blues, generally taken at similar tempos. The sameness to the individual tunes is unfortunate (better planning should have gone into the date), but the playing is first-rate throughout. In addition to DeFrancesco, the large-toned tenor saxophonist Jacques Johnson is a major asset and John DeFrancesco Jr. is a fine guitarist. The music is solid soul-jazz with appealing grooves, but it is a pity that most of the songs do not stand out by themselves. ~ Scott Yanow

Purchase Jumpin' CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Ted Brown Free Spirit CD (1989)
Jumpin' album
$14.55 A veteran tenor saxophonist who gained early recognition for his work with the Lennie Tristano school, Ted Brown has remained fairly obscure despite his consistent creativity. This superior trio set with the great bebop pianist Hod O'Brien and bassist Jacques Schols, features Brown at the top of his form. Other than his own "Smog Eyes" and the lesser-known "Trane's Slo Blues," ...

Jumpin' CD music

| | Frank Wess Quartet CD (1960)
Jumpin' music CDs
$8.49 Frank Wess has long been one of the most underrated flautists in jazz, but it's his primary instrument on this CD reissue of a Moodsville LP recorded in 1960. With fine accompaniment by piano master Tommy Flanagan, bassist Eddie Jones and drummer Bobby Donaldson, the leader's lyrical chops are evident in Alec Wilder's rarely performed ballad "It's So Peaceful in the Country." The light Latin setting of "Star Eyes" initially spotlights Flanagan's elegant piano, with the rhythm switching gears as Wess works his magic on flute. Flanagan alone introduces the dreamy ...
| | David "Fathead" Newman I Remember Brother Ray CD (2005)
Jumpin' songs
$13.85 The bluesy, distinctively hefty tenor sound of saxophonist David "Fathead" Newman has graced many recordings by many artists, but playing with Ray Charles during the 1950s and '60s is where he made a name for himself. Since then, Newman recorded numerous albums on his own, some leaning more towards jazz, others towards R&B. This versatility enables Newman to create an ideal homage to Charles, one of the most eclectic and revered musical figures in ...
