Includes liner notes by Lem Oppenheimer. The pun in the title gives the album's conceit away: This is, in fact, a dub-influenced take on Pink Floyd's classic DARK SIDE OF THE MOON. But while the idea may be groan-inducing, the results are actually quite appealing. All-Star founders Michael G. and Ticklah recruit a handful of guests, including Corey Harris, the Meditations, and Frankie Paul, among others, to turn Floyd's spacey, art-rock epic into a heavy-lidded roots excursion, incorporating rap, dancehall, IDM, and jungle rhythms. The deeply ingrained familiarity of the original creates a fine palette for the All-Stars' Jamaican coloring, resulting in a surprisingly successful synthesis. It was one of those really stupid ideas that we can all be grateful someone had the guts to follow through with. Yes, it's a reggae version of the Pink Floyd classic Dark Side of the Moon, every track drastically reworked and presented in the same order as on the original album. And yes, it works far, far better than you'd have any right to expect. The artists vary from the relatively obscure (Kirsty Rock, Dollarman) to the big-time (Corey Harris, Frankie Paul, the Meditations) and the musical styles range from roots to dancehall to jungle. Every track works well, but highlights include a very fine (and uncredited) jungle mix of "On the Run" and the great singer-deejay combo track "Time," on which Corey Harris' chesty baritone singing voice is nicely counterbalanced by Ranking Joe's speed-rap. There are several bonus dub mixes tacked onto the end of the program, and while none of them is revelatory they don't detract from the proceedings, either. At the end you realize that you were wrong to even think this was a dumb idea to begin with -- dub's psychedelic mysticism is a perfectly good match for Pink Floyd's mannered weirdness. Highly recommended. ~ Rick Anderson

The original head trip takes a "hit". Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" is the original ultimate head (and headphone) trip. Its incredible tenacity on the album charts proved that this music had staying power. It's hard to imagine anyone tackling this album and expecting to end up with anything remotely as strong.
Listening to "Dub Side", one can easily imagine that Pink Floyd had taken a trip to the islands before going into the studio way back when. The Rastafarian grooves and rhythms fit so naturally into these songs that you'd swear they were there all along.
Despite the natural fit of the regrooved sound, "Dub Side" is not perfect. For some reason the Easy Star All-Stars and their featured vocalists felt the need to digress on several vocal ego trips, rambling far afield of the original lyrics to the point where it takes a glance at the track indicator to know what song is playing.
Gripes aside, it's still a great trip. Check out the bong hits that replace the cash registers on the intro to "Money" -- ok, now exhale! Submitted by Robin (Austin, TX USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Thrilling!!! For a true Pink Floyd lover, tributes have shown the worst... and the best with this album which is marvelously achieved. Too bad it's quite impossible to find it in France in 2004! Submitted by hervebrehon (Paris, France) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Dub Side Of The Moon
$15.29 Personnel: Jackie Edwards (vocals); Judy Mowatt, Millie Small (vocals). Liner Note Author: Michael Atherton. Jackie Edwards' musical heroes were always smooth vocal stylists like Nat King Cole and Johnny Ace, and throughout his career, even as Jamaican music moved rapidly through its ska, rocksteady, roots reggae, and various dancehall phases, Edwards never strayed far from his love of ballads. Blessed with a honeyed, natural tenor and a talent for writing catchy solid songs that translated well outside the Jamaican milieu (he penned the mid-'60s hits "Keep On Running" and "Somebody Help Me" for the the Spencer Davis Group, for instance), Edwards leaned more toward an ...
