Velvet Town is a good title for Louise Taylor's latest album, because it alludes to a style that extends beyond typical singer/songwriter concerns. While a song like "Little Collette" distinguishes itself with a catchy chorus and Kristin DeWitt's harmony, the album's real difference -- the velvet -- shows up on pieces like the title cut and "Maps of Venice." The lyrics may say "singer-songwriter," but the colorings of the soundscape are pure jazz with Taylor offering subtle vocals. Indeed, the deeper one delves into Velvet Town, the more one suspects that she isn't a singer/songwriter at all. Many of the lyrics, as in "Call My Name," are impressionistic and spare, and Taylor relies heavily on vocal nuance and fresh arrangements to get her emotional message across. The backing players rely on the same arsenal of instruments as most contemporary folk bands, but the production creates rich textures that permeate the listener's senses. The bass and acoustic guitar interplay at the beginning of "Call My Name" draws the listener in before the lyric even begins and then provides a steady, rhythmic motif that drives the song forward. Taylor succeeds by creating a distinct style that is easy on the ears and filled with pleasing surprises. With a melodious sound and consistently good songs, Velvet Town will serve as perfect listening for a lazy Saturday afternoon. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.
If awards were given out for smoldering sensuality in the music of female singer/songwriters, Louise Taylor would have a mantle full. The narratives on Taylor's new album Velvet Town are rich with the emotional intensity of full-grown womanhood - and Taylor delivers them with all of the keen insight, worldly wisdom and survivor's pride that richness implies. Combining poetic sophistication with a husky, powerful voice that thrives on bluesy nuance, a deft mastery of the acoustic guitar and an enigmatically commanding presence, Taylor's recorded performances are gems of sophistication and soul. Fans of Patty Griffin, Cassandra Wilson and Norah Jones should hear Velvet Town. It's Louise Taylor's best album to date.

Velvet Town
$17.09 Rhino's superbly compiled reissue of Randy Newman's masterpiece, GOOD OLD BOYS, raises the stakes on what was already an essential disc. The remastering of the original album is an aural treat, bringing a new clarity to Newman's own performances and brilliant arrangements, and tacks on a stripped-down demo version of the song "Marie," one of Newman's most heartbreaking and beautiful love songs. It also includes a bonus disc, entitled JOHNNY CUTLER'S BIRTHDAY (the working title for GOOD OLD BOYS), that includes earlier versions of the songs that ended up on the finished album. The second disc is fascinating ...
| | Flatlanders Now Again CD (2002)
Velvet Town
$13.65 Even by the most lackadaisical release schedule, three decades is a bit of a wait between a group's first and second albums. Of course, this pause in the discography of progressive-country cult heroes the Flatlanders can be explained by the fact that each of the three members spent the time in the middle becoming respected solo singer-songwriters. Still, it sounds like no time passed at all between the posthumously released MORE A LEGEND THAN A BAND and the reunited bliss of NOW AGAIN, as the reunited band's mix of traditional country, ...
| | Amy Rigby Til The Wheels Fall Off CD (2003)
Velvet Town
$13.95 The consistent strength of Amy Rigby's albums sometimes makes them just a bit difficult to write about -- each of her albums is loaded with witty and telling songs about the occasional pleasures and frequent pitfalls of life as a single woman past 30 (or, these days, past 40), and her slightly rickety but powerful voice and smart, tuneful melodies make the perfect vehicle for her material. Rigby's fourth album, Till the Wheels Fall Off, fits right in alongside her previous three sets, so what is there to say about this disc that hasn't been said about the others? Well, just as important as the consistency of Rigby's music is the fact she knows how to find any number of variations on her basic themes, and like the best singer/songwriters, she knows that each person can have any number of stories to tell, and she knows how to tell them with humor, clarity, ...
| | Caitlin Cary I'm Staying Out CD (2003)
Velvet Town
$13.69 On her second album as a solo artist, 2001's I'M STAYING OUT, former Whiskeytown fiddler Caitlin Cary builds on the strength of her debut, WHILE YOU WEREN'T LOOKING, while expanding her sound with producer Chris Stamey of the DBs to include more fleshed-out arrangements and instrumentation. Cary ...
| | Steve Forbert Just Like There's Nothin' To It CD (2004) Digipak
Velvet Town
$14.29 After more than a quarter-century of making records, Steve Forbert sounds as engaged as ever on JUST LIKE THERE'S NOTHIN' TO IT, his first studio album since the Grammy-nominated Jimmie Rodgers tribute ANY OLD TIME. After that brief country dalliance, he's back to form, mining a rich folk-rock vein. His muscular band of session men is fully capable of rocking out, as on the working-man's-ennui lament ...

| | Eva Avila Somewhere Else CD (2006) Import
Velvet Town
$29.09 Eva Avila, after her victory performance on Canadian Idol in mid-September 2006, was poised to be a superstar. She's a drop-dead gorgeous girl, whose captivating soulful voice could make her the next Celine Dion. Instead, rushed production and overexposure led to the release of Somewhere Else, a disappointing debut for Canada's answer to Kelly Clarkson. Most expected a spicy album from Avila, one with impressive, catchy, Latin-infused hooks, much like what was heard from her live performances during Canadian Idol. However, it wasn't meant to be. Avila opens with "I Owe It All to You," the album's first single, which actually impresses. It serves up the flare of the budding star, but unfortunately it goes downhill from there. The opening mix is followed by mediocre club songs and schmaltzy vanilla ballads. Even "This Kind of Love," the Cyndi Lauper penned ballad, is a snore to listen to. The album only begins to pick up at the very end. The penultimate song, "Meant to Fly," written by super duo Chantal Kreviazuk and husband Raine Maida, was Avila's winning live performance, and sounds even better in the studio than it did on-stage. The last song on the album (and its second single) "Fallin' for You" is one of a few moments on the album that actually proves Avila's worthiness. It provides a glimmer of the success to come. Still, by the time you've gotten to the end of the album you've already long since given up. That's not to say Avila's singing isn't great. She makes the songs passably enjoyable, mostly due to her voice, not her charisma. This isn't a necessarily bad album, it's just primarily fluffy. There is too much air in between the substance. One ...
