The four pieces that make up Wadada Leo Smith's Lake Biwa were composed between 2000 and 2004. They appear here for the first time. The musicians who perform these pieces include John Zorn; drummers Susie Ibarra, Gerald Cleaver, and Kwaku Kwaakye Obeng; pianists Craig Taborn, Jamie Saft, Anthony Coleman, and Yuko Fujiama; bassists John Lindberg and Wes Brown; violinist Jennifer Choi; cellist Erik Friedlander; guitarist Marc Ribot; and tuba player Marcus Rojas. This is quite a lineup, to say the least. Smith has been composing with his originally conceived and developed Ankhrasmation system of notation since the early '70s. The subdued title track is ethereal in places, yet utterly grounded by its sense of time and color. Yellow Room are brother and sisters Alan, Ruth and Niamh who have been writing, recording and gigging together since late 2000. Despite all having demanding day jobs, their shared love of writing and performing has kept them indulging in their music over the years.Niamh and Ruth started out singing at weddings and funerals and also performing in local amateur productions but then moved on to writing their own songs which they performed at a number of small Dublin venues.Alan had been in a few rock bands actively gigging around the country. He and Ruth had worked together on some projects while studying at the Rock College, and when Alan’s band broke up in 2000, the girls saw the opportunity to poach him, and another founder member of the band, Ray, and combine their talents. Yellow Room was born.Many months of writing and fine tuning followed until they had a good range of material ready to perform and, through regular acoustic gigs in various pubs around Dublin, the band found their sound.During the summer of 2001, Yellow Room spent some time in the studio recording a collection of songs with a full band.
